2.5 Explosion effects

Even yours had it.

Not that much difference that I can see, really, and the ones ED attempts to simulate are a generation or two older than the Mk-84 shown anyway. So I'd say the FX shown are _still_ a vast improvement over the old FX.

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

As stated before though, you have to balance with performance, we dont want all this work done and then have a slide show anytime a bomb is let off...
If the FX is dynamically generated then would be nice to have a setting to choose from a couple options like size and length so we can choose it based system performance.

That is why bombing and artillery is visible for tens of kilometers for longer times than about 10 seconds even when wind scatters the smoke and dust.

For low level it is as well a smoke screen, denying line of sight for moments.

Why setting for size etc ain't fair by gameplay reasons if some players see better.

It is far far better what we have now, but still needs balancing.

That's that really got me too.

Maybe it's a little too visible, but hey- it's cool with me! :D

I think it is slightly maybe even too little as we can't see the dust traveling on ground and fragments flying around, creating the illusion of it.

Anyways looking carefully one can spot it there.

considering this is a 'test' and 'wip' i think it will be a great addiontion to the game, It will certainly be 1000% better than the current ones.

so a  here

Check the above.... Lots of fire from most...

I am not talking Hollywood effects, buy there are clear fireballs in most bomb drops in daytime even. Even yours had it.

Look the real bombs being dropped... You don't need a burning material for that.

On a bombing drop training zone there ain't anymore anything that burns and yet most bombs generate big fire and smoke traces.

Thanks to the OSD data from the high speed camera, it's easy to measure the duration from when the bomb first exploded to when the "big fireball" had all but dissipated. ~270 frames at 5400 fps = 50 milliseconds, or slightly longer than a single frame of PAL video (40ms). If that's your definition of a big fireball, then we're simply not speaking the same language...

Check above.... My first post where are more videos...

Far longer than 50ms....

I am not talking about Hollywood or some Napalm effects as you think, but actual explosions and fire can last second or two (rock terrain) or there might not even be any visible or very short one!

But smoke and dirt will stay up more than 10 seconds...

You guys are gonna scare ED away from posting any test or WIP videos in the future, you dont know what you are seeing in this vid, and you dont know if weapon type will effect the explosion effects... need to just enjoy the ride and if you have concerns when its released report it then.

wow, I've been waiting for this since I read they were looking to hire an FX guy for explosions. Really impressive! The current system has always been a huge letdown for me. Sucks to show friends how amazing the A-10 is, only to be visually impotent on ordnance delivery.

This is a HUGE improvement. Glad to see ED showing off a bit.

Okaaaayyyyyyy!!!! THat is amazing. Holy crap. Great job ED. Love it. I agree... having ability to modify the smoke longeivity parameters, the fire parameters will allow different fx for different objects..example an ammo depot/fuel tanker/ground explosion etc. Keep it up. This is incredible. Please release 2.5 asap. Lol

Adding more fire wouldn't be very realistic. They do that in Hollywood movies for more spectacular explosions but it just doesn't match up with real life.

I agree about those bomb effects. They looke pretty good, but it will surely depend on how powerful the explosive is and remember that targets such as fuel tanks and ammo depots can blow with BIG and pretty firey explosion.

P-47 strafing a train with machine gun fire:

.50cal bullets hit another train:

Another train hit with .50cal fire (probably fuel or ammo)

And here JDAM:

It all depends what blows up and definitely bombs that hit the ground will produce way more visible dust than a fuel tank blowing up above the surface. :)

I tested in the sim last night, bombing a transport truck, the truck burned and smoked for a half hour before I got bored and exited the sim. I dont see an issue there.

Sounds good to me. Problem is some may forget this is a test ED kindly shared....be a shame to lose that benefit :(

Edit* as a 'test of a WIP explosion.. I can't say more than well done. And thanks for improving a free map!

Not sure where to place this since there is no official 2.5 thread, but this seems to be a video of the WIP explosions. If this is the case I will say that the effects are coming along very nicely!

On closer look...there is already so much more improvement compared the teaser that matt posted. The smoke in the older video tended to descend into the ground and fade away looking very canned/artificial. This new video...the smoke rises and just dissipates as you would expect. Great progress ED. This is just awesome. :D :thumbup::thumbup:
