My new Christmas build

Recommended Posts

So the order is placed and will be delivered by Santa on Christmas eve

1x 8600k, 2 sticks of 8gb DDR4 3000 CL15 and an asus Prime A Z370 in a pear tree :)

Took so much pleading and grovelling to get the upgrade from the i3 8350K chip which is a great chip but the 6C6T i5 will be a little more future proofed.

And the cherry on the cake I have uncovered my old XSPC delta mounting adapter so it will fit the i5 without mods or expensive new waterblocks ;)

Merry Christmas hardware geeks:yay:

Oh and I should mention the wifes reticence in spending. We had an offer for a house accepted today and will have to put up the deposit in January Zoiks

i5 8600k@5.2Ghz, Asus Prime A Z370, 32Gb DDR4 3000, GTX1080 SC, Oculus Rift CV1, Modded TM Warthog Modded X52 Collective, Jetseat, W10 Pro 64

I am looking at the i3 8350k as well, the 6 cores of the i5 will not be utilized by DCS.

Why did you go with the i5, I am just wondering since there is quite the price difference between the two.

Currently I have an i5 2400 so anything will be an improvement for me.

i'm jalous. Why not the 8700K?

Price really. It was a stretch to get the 8600k and extra 100GBP was unnecessaryfor the 8700k along with availability

I went for the i5 over the i3 purely from a future proof POV, those extra 2 cores will be useful somewhere along the line before a different build.

The machine in the sig is my son's I "borrowed" for the rift, he is gaming on my i7920 which was my last PC build in 2009 :P

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it. I got a rift yesterday so I think its time to upgrade. I have a EVGA 970 SSC that should be ok to get me started in VR.

wrong, I have multiple screenshots showing DCS 2.x utilizing 6 real cores, and not by 5 or 10%.

1 core dcs

1 core sound

2 cores DX11

no idea where the other 2 came from but they were utilized, and I wasnt in VR.

Congrats on the new machine, and the new house, Cibit.

I am trying to hold off on a new build (two of them actually) until the middle of next year. I want to see how v2.5 behaves on my current sim system first before replacing it. My non-flight sim gaming rig is based on an i7-3820 and is also due for an upgrade.

I would love to do the non-sim rig sooner but I just dropped $7k on a new heating system for the house, since the old one was leaking, so I am trying to be financially sensible.

Enjoy your new toys.

Thank goodness for back button, I hovered over the 8350K for a long time, especially as we got news of the house the same day. I may have to get a job:cry:

Thank you, that rig you use ATM will sell for a good price on 2nd hand market I would imagine. I hope your warm this winter with an Uber heating system. Is it rigged up to your voice activation ? I have been meaning to pick your brains for a while about the cool stuff you can do with lights etc. :)

I actually have never sold my used rigs. My friends children just get really good machines to do their homework on.

Yes, the new heat works quite well, although I keep a cool home so it doesn't work too hard.

The voice control is limited but the thermostats, which were already here, do respond to my voice, via Amazon's Echo. I can't turn it off/on but I can change the temp with just a voice command. The capabilities continue to grow. I can now make phone calls using the Echo, which annoys the hell out of the dogs since they don't know where the other voice is coming from.

If I can ever find wall plates that look good but aren't made out of metal, wood is my next option, then I will have complete control over the lights. My copper and brass finished wall plates interfere with the WiFi connection so I am not where I want to be.

Btw, satellite (Sirius/XM) radio is now integrated with the Echo system. No commercials and awesome music is a major plus, for me, since I run music throughout the house 24/7. Marantz based audio, coupled with a Synology multimedia server, throughout the house is nearly complete.

Btw, your 'Adding JTAC Guide' was the inspiration for the first missions I ever created for the A-10C. This was before DCS World even existed.

How did I miss that. I guess I better add it to my Echo skill!

Turning the Christmas tree on and off with Echo is very nice. I know it makes me seem lazy, but when your heading upstairs and realized that the Christmas tree lights are still on, you can just tell Echo to turn it off. Quite a bit more handy that I thought it would be.

Old and lazy, yep that is me.

EDIT: Bit, keep in mind that you have a house full of children that you can tell to turn of lights and such. I just have two dogs which are short, don't comprehend much english (except words that involve food) and have no thumbs. ;)

The Echo is also my alarm clock and kitchen timer. The ability to set multiple hands free timers while cooking is awesome.

@hansangb

Two warnings, you have to pay for the full service package to get internet capable Sirius/XM. The connectivity can be flaky at times, for no reason that I can suss out.

I have pretty much decided I will reformat my OS drive and have a fresh instal of windows 10 64 pro. Can I get you guys to post any tips tricks and hints in case I forget anything.

Also what is the correct method for deactivating my modules so I don't loose anymore activations, I am getting low on certain modules :)

Don't forget to save your controller configs if you used DCS to configure it (and not Target, for example).

And roster/flight log (C:\users\user_name\Saved Games folder

nothing special, get the newest 10 on usb, install, then run the board's dvd for the drivers, done :)

10 is easier to install then 7 imho.

Tbh, I would deinstall all drivers on the current install and NOT reinstall the OS, unless you think it could need it. There is no need in 10 to do this.

Send a beep if u get stuck, I am around...mining LoL

Merry Christmas to all of You :smilewink:

P.S:: dont forget a few Liters demineralized water for your waterblock refilling... might be hard to get on the 25th :)

delidding it ???

I may well try without reinstalling. Get a better handle on how much faster it is . Doing benchmarks for ssd's yesterday every one showed slow write speeds. Like really low.

Watercooling serviced, cleaned the block and realised since I fitted my D5 vario my loop has been running backwards. The pump outlet was pushing water through the rad and not the block. Still got good temps though :)

kidding aside:

flash a new Bios, use Dimm2a and Dimm2b ( RTFM !!), use XMP or try manual...try & play with it. Loosen timings etc...
