My new Christmas build

Recommended Posts

Well I had already tried all options for Dimm configuration but I first used A2 and B2 the grey ones. Had updated to latest bios too. Even resat the cpu and checked it was seated correctly and no bent pins

Still bloody fast though I have it at 5 Ghz but the voltages are high, This is just ramping it up via software to see what it was like. Max temps Via Realtemps are 67*C with Prime95

I assume each stick works if run alone, just both together wont !?

YOu can try any config slot wise to test if both boot, tho only 1 per channel will give you 128bit bus width.

try A1 + B1, its valid too, A1 + B2 is safer to use and thus referred to as default for 2 modules but that is just as valid as the first one, both do 128bit. If your Dimms like the A1B1 setup, heck, no problem.

Still, I would likely return them and get another set of RAM and hope for better luck.

Usually it's a Bios thing with not over the top speeds. 3000-3600 is what most if not any IMC can handle, beyond 3600 things get complicated with high oc, at least that was 7thgen, 8thgen we will find out. If the Bios' wont fix it it is likely the IMC to blame. That would be worse than what Ryzen had on its launch, at least that was clearly communicated.

edit: try each of the 4 slot too, maybe even each module each slot, -->IF 1 slot will never boot with any stick, RMA the damn board ! Then its the board, 99%

I can run orange room vr benchmark and x plane 11 but dcs will not load a mission. Bleeding hell:huh:

Edit Dcs won't load with the one stick now. May have to check further

Ok checked. It is the internet to blame. Work is being done on the line and I cannot load a mission with paid modules. That is a bug for a separate thread.

Well, you need 1 module in either Channel to enjoy 128bit bus width, I dare to say, they even need to have the same "digit" A1+B1 -or- A2+B2, I dont think A1+B2 will give you 128bit, but you can try. CPUZ will show the bandwidth iirc. There are tools that show you if 64 or 128bit.

Cibit, there are tons of threads with people having issuesd with Z370 and DRAM compatibility.

[H]ard|OCP had troube getting most of them to work with fast RAM too, and that says something.

XMP is a "Luftschloss" as we say, a big hype that vanishes into nothin' the moment you wanna grab it. Nice to talk about but wont work most of the time, a marketing gag foremost so to say.

I am happy mine run all four at 3200. I tried again last night to go 3333, lots of BSODs and broken boots...ahhh what a mess !

Z370 is as unripe as an apple in early May. Nothing you wanna bite & try now, WAIT !

As statewd by CPUZ, its 64bit SINGLE mode.

It's no neck breaker, but a bad show for Asus.

Can you try to exchange the RAM ? from a buddy next door, etc... shop down the road ??

There are guys in ROG forum that have QVL RAM and still, NO LUCK. By what book shall yopu go then, if their own guides fail ?

Well Lars it is running pretty sweet although my SSD read and write speeds have dipped

11617 in Orangeroom bench

Also the Normandy Viggen Shipstrike mission before when all the anti ship missiles launch the game shuddered to a crawl with 8Gb RAM, with 16Gb I was constant 90 fps YAAY

I really hope for a better Bios in the next 1-2 weeks.

Still Cibit, have you checked if you can exchange the RAM for a different set/brand ?

What if the behaviour stays the same after 2 updates, then it might be too late tpo give them back.

Fingers crossed mate :)

I have set in motion the return of my board. I love Amazon returns.

I click a box in my orders give a reason from a drop down menu. I chose "item does not work" they send me a new one free of charge and I have till the 8th of February to send it back. So I will not have a stripped down rig waiting for an RMA:thumbup:

You should be OK, the issues seem to be with Asus Z370 boards

Well, that's one less thing to worry about then. Thanks Johnny!

BitMaster, It's amazing that I can sync my laptop to Google Drive. Typically about 400GB worth of changes. What great times we live in...

Heck yeah, downloading will be fun. My pal has a 100Mbit pipe and that is already mindblowing.

Now this is 5x faster, each way, can't believe it till I suck my first ISO in 2 minutes or less.

I may buy another 1080Ti for mining and see form there on if I keep the base system or move on to AMD Threadripper arena. I need more drives, more NVMe without removing SATA mainly, a 2nd GPU and maybe a 3rd. My new home has 10Gbit wiring, did that myself, so a 10Gbit card was nice too. All those things cant be done with this crippled BS. It's fast, yes, no doubt, has 6 cores, yeah, better than 4, but it lacks everything else that makes it attractive. RAM support is meeehhh too.

I think I could live with 4+GHz but 16 cores :) ...we will see once TR2 is out

LOL. It's never enough. This is why I tell people, the computer I want is *always* $3,000+. It was true with 20Mhz 286s, Compaq 386, 486's etc. It's always been $3,000 LOL

  • 2 weeks later...

Fitted the new motherboard. All good now (so far) the Ram boots in dual channel mode and works off the XMP profile fine. Just updated BIOS to 0606

Now I can start to really get to grips with this board. Wonder if I can get 5.3 stable enough for gaming.

One bad thing, I ran out of Kryonaught and had to make do with some old arctic silver. Temps are slightly up on previous board. May have to get more Thermal Grizzly :) Idle temps are @23C
