I took the plunge and have a 1070 and won't run DCS non-Rift ever again.. (And for the record, I think the 1070 is the absolute minimum I would recommend regardless of what Oculus says) The rest of my system is a Ryzen 7 1800 with 16 Gigs memory and 2 SSDs...

Yes the resolution is not optimal and yes there is a screen door effect, and yes it can be difficult to read the gauges at times..

And yes I am fanatical about things that effect anything visual..

And with all of that said, the difference in immersion makes all of the above-mentioned items... Absolutely ZERO issue..

I was concerned about all of these items myself and waited for quite some time before I jumped into it and now wish I had done so much earlier..

Do yourself a favor and head over to your nearest Best Buy and ask for a demo.. Ask them to show you the mountain climbing demo (that is the one that sold me).

Once I got it home and tjumped into the cockpit I was absolutely blown away.. And it only got better from there..

Be sure to read the posts with settings suggestions as they have a major impact on readability of gauges and such.. At first it was horrendous, but after following the suggestions it is much better. Still not awesome, but acceptable anyway..

ENJOY!

I too had those same concerns, and took the plunge with my Rift about a year ago.

It is an incredible experience, absolutely incredible and I feel that way each time I get into the cockpit.

I have a ton of hours flying with it now and will not do so without it.

I agree with the above statements. Had a 1070 with the rift. The immersion is so amazing even with this release that I upgraded to an 8700k with 1080ti. The first time I got it up and running I just sat in the pit for 15mins looking around. I'll never fly reg screen again.

OP - you're in for a treat! I've been flying with the Rift for 7 months now, and will NEVER go back to 2D flying. My TrackIR is only used with Arma3 at this point.

The immersion of VR is incredible!

Over a year of VR flying under my belt and absolutely no intention of ever going back. Manage expectations, but lull the trigger. The immersion CANNOT be beat! If you wondering about Rift versus Vive, I own both, and IMHO the Rift is clearly superior, especially for DCS use.

Good luck!

I find it hard to fly without the Rift now. Everything is so much better and easier when you are actually sitting IN the cockpit.

Like Hook47 said, Rift is clearly better than Vive for DCS, mainly because the screen door effect is alot less pronounced.

I do however recommend you to keep an eye on CES today (yes today) since HTC is expected to announce an improved Vive with higher resolution. Visit UploadVR or RoadToVR later today and there should be reports to be read on the matter.

I kinda feel like I made a mistake upgrading my PC for the RIFT. I spent a good amount of money to upgrade and am getting the same performance as my old PC. I went from a 980TI to a 1080TI. I went from 32GB DDR3 to 32GB DDR4. I went from a 4770K to a 8700K.

You were able to maintain 45FPS (with ASW) *all* the time? For me, I'm almost always at 45FPS and 90 up in the sky. I wouldn't have thought 980Ti would have kept up.

I ask the same question and here is how it went.

Bottom line is I have been simming and was a former fixed/rotor pilot for 35 yrs. Another vet summed it up very well and here it is with my take.

If you want to go for clarity and fly online where the 1st guy who spots the other 1st WINS, stick with 4k. If you want IMMERSION and want to feel like you are actually sitting in a actual cockpit, look over and experience depth perception but at the cost of clarity, go VR.

I have a very high end Sony 4k 36 inch and spent 1/2 my time tweaking P3D and DCS for graphics. So I knew the reduction would be steep and hit hard. But the very 1st time I ran VR and within 10 seconds of the "tutorial" for using your hands which takes place in a electronics shop, I KNEW instantly this was the VR I had been waiting for decades.

Do it but don't slouch. My MSI 1080 TI was "VR READY" which meant nothing to me 6 months ago. But now when I realized Oculus needed TWO hdmi connections and the card had them, it made that steep price worth it.

Do it.:smilewink:

That is what it is all about, in my case the immersion far outweighs the current clarity issues.

Technically the Rift only requires one HDMI connection. Now one's monitor likely may require another, in my case my EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 only had one HDMI connector, so I used display ports for my two monitors.
