Need advice overcloking FX8350

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Just bought an gtx1070ti amp extreme as it was on a good price but i was aware that my CPU may not be up for the task.

So, do you guys think if i overclock my fx8350 (its running in default 4.2ghz) i could avoid some bottleneck?

Sadly, my "decent" motherboard its out of service for some stuff that happened with my last PSU (it burned the cables of the CPU 4-pin socket),

So now i have this

Asus M5a78l-m Plus Usb 3 Am3+ That has an OLD bios and i dont understand if im really able to tweak this to overclock nor if it will be safe as it may not be OC efficient in terms of temps or its ability of being able to manage more voltage etc. (Im not really experience with OC)

sorry for all that chatter, but what do you think?? can i do some OC to mitigate some Bottleneck till i have money for my system upgrade??? 16gs of rams are expensive af right now

The blurb says you can overclock this board

AMD® FX™ /Phenom™II /Athlon™II /Sempron™ 100 Series Processors (Socket AM3+)

This motherboard supports AMD® AM3+ multi-core processors with unique L3 cache and delivers better overclocking capabilities with less power consumption. It features dual-channel DDR3 memory support and accelerates data transfer rate up to 5200MT/s via HyperTransport™ 3.0 based system bus. This motherboard also supports AMD® CPUs in the new 32nm manufacturing process.

It will run hot though I would assume. What kind of cooler do you have? If it is stock you have little room for manoeuvre

Also this

Unleash True Core Performance Intelligently

ASUS Core Unlocker simplifies the activation of a latent AMD® CPU—with just a simply key. Enjoy an instant performance boost by simply unlocking the extra cores, without performing complicated BIOS changes.

Check your instal disk and you should find the software to make this happen. It is also worth getting some temperature monitoring software to compare temps

will have a look to that ASUS core unlocker :).

one of my friends has that cpu as well, clocked beyond 5ghz.

beware of the wattage, it will be way beyond 200w, way further up the scale.

iirc he mentioned 350w while under full load :(

you need a very good cooler and earpads ;)

M5A78L-M PLUS/USB3

has a Small VRM Array, Any Overclock would be risky for an FX8350 due to power draw.

dont, that fx cpu is a 300+w beast

you have likely too few vrm's (phases), not mainly a cooling issue tho cooling them is crucial too.

dont fry the miner..lol

I have an 8350 on a gen 1 ASUS Sabertooth. True all the testing and performance testing I have done, You won't see much gain past 4.4Gh. After that, you are just creating heat with little return. I suggest that you try for the 4.4 and leave it there.

That's my 2cents.

4.4ghz sounds about near my current 4.2... im certain that i cant go to 4.4 without touching voltage or something else as i already tried 4.3 and i crashed.

What do you suggest?? 4.4 and a bit more voltage? this is how mi pc is looking right now (remote control)

A Heatsink wont solve the issue.

it's like Running a 30AMP Appliance in a 15AMP wall Socket, It will work, until the VRM goes up in smoke, no because of heat, but because of the power draw.

Ty skate, any hint to how perform @4.4?? giving the fact that i crash after 4.2 without any voltage changes... what should i do? do u see it doable?

I have mine Voltage at 1.45v made it to 4.8Gh at that level with the 212PRO heat sink.
