I find the writing on dials too blurry to look at with a PD of 1.0. I mean it's better than 1.5.8 but still not fully readable.

I think I can settle with 2x msaa, deferred shading on and everything high except civ traffic and shadows medium.

Normandy is gorgeous, and I can run with clutter and trees at around 70% and maintain fps in the 70's ( ASW Off) flying low over Normandy in the Spit and of course 90 fps over the sea.

How are you setting AF off? I tried ctrl num 1 and using tray tool but it still runs at 45 fps or 90, nothing in between. Does it matter which ctrl key you use (left or right) and do you need numlock off or on?

I set a profile for DCS in Oculus Tray Tool with ASW set to Off.

It is working fine for me.

Make sure you point the profile to DCS.exe in the bin folder. ( has a standard icon).

Well I think I have settled on using MSAA x4, and just running a PD of 1.0.

I like MSAA better, and I seem to get better performance running a 1.0 PD with MSAA.

16X AF.

Deferred Shading ON

Gamma at 1.5

Spent about three days tweaking and testing, think I am just going to leave her be now and just have some fun.

Yep, Im with you although only masa x2

MSAAx4 is a no go for me too. I have an i7-5960x extreme, EVGA 1080ti FTW3, 16g RAM, 1tb dedicated SSD. Going from MSAAx2 to MSAAx4 cuts my performance in half.

VR PD = 1.2

MSAA = 2x

Anisotropic Filtering = 2x

Deferred Shading = ON

Terrain Shadows = FLAT

Cockpit Global Illumination = ON

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

I'm still tweaking, but finding that (at this stage) I need to vary some settings by map to get the best results rather than use fixed settings for all.

The settings I have ended up with after tweaking for over a week are below:

Textures: HIGH

Terrain: HIGH

Civ Traffic: OFF

Water: MEDIUM

Visibility Range: MEDIUM

Heat Blur: OFF

Shadows: MEDIUM

Res: NA

Resolution of Cockpit Displays: 1024 (lowering this doesn't seem to improve performance)

MSAA: 2

HDR: NA

Deferred Shading:

ON for Caucasus (trees are too much of an eye sore with it off)

ON or OFF for Normandy (depending on in game time of day, but kinda sitting on the fence)

OFF for Nevada (lose the nice DS effects, but colors and terrain look so much better to me)

Clutter/Grass: 0%

Trees: 80%

Preload: radius 50%

Chimney Smoke: 2

Gamma: 1.6 (default but often adjust slightly in game for specific conditions)

AF: 8x

Terrain Shadows: Flat

Global Cockpit Illumination: ON (but sometimes OFF depending on time of day)

VR Settings

PD: 1.3 (intensive missions and combat) - Smooth 45 FPS and good overall balance between performance and visuals including spotting

PD: 1.6 (simple missions and solo flying) - Very smooth 45 FPS and simply gorgeous! I have recently found just flying lots of circuits (touch'n go's etc) is almost as enjoyable as any combat because of how clear the instruments are and how real it feels (even 1.5 to 1.6 PD is big step, but not much difference beyond that, although FPS still seems smooth).

After comparing with the settings others have posted, I'm thinking of experimenting a bit more with AF (I don't recall it making much difference during initial testing, but most seem to have it low or off) and also putting Visibility Range up to HIGH (as most others seem to have) and seeing what the benefits are compared to a drop in PD (if any) is required to maintain performance. But I seem to remember dropping this from HIGH to MEDIUM was one of the more effective adjustments for boosting performance (with FLAT ground shadows being another one).

Thanks OP for this thread ... very enlightening to see what settings others are using on comparable rigs!

My specs are in sig below (note that my system not currently OC'd as I'm more than happy with stock performance, but might do so once my 2.5 settings are finalized)

8700k, 1080Ti, 16GB 3200 RAM, Warthog Hotas, MFG Crosswind Pedals, Rift CV1, Obutto R3volution

I have everything on high except civ traffic and shadows medium. Trees at near full and preload radius full. PD 1.5 and msa X2 AF x16 terrain shadows default.

I've seen average of 53 with a high of 90 but most of the time in combat or flying low it's at 45.

It was better in 1.5 for VR and 2.2. I haven't played a Nevada misison in 2.5 yet.

  • 1 month later...

I picked up a Zotac 1080ti Amp Edition the day before yesterday and I believe I've settled on the following.

Terrain High

Textures High

CIvTraffic Low

Water High

Visibility High

Heat Blur Off

Shadows Flat

Cockpit Res 1024

MSAA Off

DS On

Clutter 200

Trees 80%

Preload 80%

Chimney 0

Gama 2.2

AF 16x

Terrain Shadows Flat

Cockpit Global Ilumination Off

PD 1.6

I don't go below 45 and can hit 90. I'm happy.

I've had MSAA as high as 4x with 1.2 PD but it was blurry at distance whereas a PD of 1.6 is clearer. The cockpit global illumination just looks shimmery to me no matter what other settings I use so it's off all the time now.

Specs in signature of system have changed to 6700k @ 4.6 and added the 1080Ti. While the 1060 did a really good job for what it is, the 1080ti is spectacular. Damn fine job ED! It's unreal that they've taken advantage so quickly of almost bleeding edge technology.
