Supersonic in a dive?

When I first tried out the DCS AV-8B NA, I was amazed of it's capability to go supersonic in a powered dive with ease (https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3307325&postcount=19). Just a patch later this wasn't possible anymore. Severe shaking occurs when going transsonic and somewhere 1.06-1.07ish one of the wings, most probably the left one, decides to just come off just shortly past the outrigger gear.

 

As we all know, the Harrier can't reach supersonic speeds in level flight. But how about diving? After all, the Hawker P.1154 isn't that much different in shape, the biggest difference being the intakes to provide enough intake air to produce the thrust needed to get her up to 1.6 in level flight. The wing shape is practically the same and in most cases the wings are the reason planes can't go supersonic without suffering from structural failures. I just looked around the net and found these:

Apparently, there are accounts of the Harrier going up to 1.3 in a dive, I just don't have access to them fsgrin.png

The wing shape in Av-8B and Gr' s harriers was drastically changed from A/FR/Gr3 versions

The Big wing Harriers won't go and shouldn't be flown supersonic. They have the aerodynamics of a house brick. Still great fun to fly though...:D:joystick::thumbup:

reference A1-AV8BB-NFM-000 PG 217 Section 4.1 Limitations

AV-8B – 585 KCAS/1.0 indicated mach number (IMN).

TAV-8B – 550 KCAS/0.9 IMN.

 

There is also a chart 4-8 that will give you specific speed vs altitude. And then the weapons also have limitations based on configuration. you would take the lowest of all three
