The weather is pretty rough out there. But it’ll only be an issue for Departures and Arrivals, so make sure your instrument landing skills are up to par. Our target is at an elevation well above the cloud layer. You can play as Blue or Red, and this mission is primarily a ground attack mission … but that could change. Each side has objectives that are relatively close to the others, so watch out for any players on the opposite team.

 

-- Briefing --

We just received intel that the enemy brass is meeting at their mountain outpost. This is an opportunity we CAN NOT miss. It means you're going to have to depart in less than favorable conditions ... and it doesn't look like this weather is going to clear any time soon. So you'll likely be arriving back in the same weather. Your Primary target is at Waypoint 3. At waypoint 4 there is a secondary target consisting of numerous aircraft parked on the ramp or helo's parked on a FARP. Targeting them will be difficult as the low overcast layer existing at your home airport is also present there. There's a tertiary target that exists at/around Waypoint 5. A Cruiser is attempting to sail back home after a catastrophic failure that disabled all of their defenses. There's a light destroyer escorting it back, but this is a perfect opportunity for us to send this powerful warship to the bottom of the sea. The enemy is hoping to use the cover of these low clouds to shield its movement.

This is an all-in-one style Air-Ground, Air-Air attack mission for the Persian Gulf map, and supports every flyable platform in DCS.  There are over 50 different missions that can be played inside this one mission.  In order to activate a mission, you MUST select it through the F10 radio menu option.  Once completed with a mission, you will have the option of selecting a new mission.   If you selected a mission that you no longer wish to complete, or have selected a mission in error, you can use the "Auto-complete" radio option to delete the units and go back to the main menu.    ** NOTE - if you select the "auto-complete" option, you can no longer attack that missions units in the future. **

 

 

** Special Notes for Platforms

- AH-64, 3rd and 4th slot = no FCR/RFI

 - Bf-109, 3rd and 4th slot = no flare gun

 - C-101CC, 2nd slot = solo

 - C-101EB, 2nd slot = rear seat NS430

 - CEI, 2nd slot = solo

 - I-16, 3rd slot = landing torch

 - L-39C,2nd slot = no gunsight (with NS430)

 - L-39ZA, 3rd and 4th slot = solo

 - M-2000C , 3rd and 4th slot = DDM Sensor

 - Mi-24, 3rd and 4th slot = no IR suppressor

 All Fixed wing aircraft start at 4 different Airports, or 3 different Carrier’s: Al Minhad AB, Al Maktoum AB, Dubai Intl, Sharjah Intl, CV-40 Tarawa, CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt, or the Admiral Kuznetsov .  All the helicopters start at Al Maktoum AB.  The fleet consisting of 3 Carriers is sailing NorthEast - SouthWest, starting just north of the Palm Jebel Ali man made island.  The Kuznestov has 4 Su-33’s, the Tarawa has 4 AV-8B’s, while the Theodore Roosevelt has 2 F-14A(late)’s, 4 F-14B’s, 4 F-18’s and the Mod of Interest (Sea) and Plane of Interest (Sea) platforms which are defaulted to 3 F-14B’s and 3 F-18’s  

 

None of the aircraft have ordinance already loaded.  So don't forget to load something!  

 

For the Rescue/Transport Missions, only helicopters and the Harrier can complete the RoofTop Helipad mission.  All other Rescue/Transport missions can be completed by any airframe.

 

Ground Mission Difficulty definitions:

   Unattended Depots:  No enemy return fire.

   Easy - Intended to be completed by a single player. Air defense includes small arms and vehicle mounted machine guns.  

   Medium - Can be completed by a more competent single player, but really intended for 2+ players.   Air defense includes AAA vehicles (guns) some with radar capability.  And a possible short range IR SAM unit. 

   Hard - Intended for a small group, or team, of players.  Air defense includes multiple SAM's, both IR and Radar. 

   Very Hard - Intended for a team of players.  Air defenses are extremely formidable.

 

Air Mission Difficulty definitions:  (These missions are mainly built for 1-2 players, except for the "Large Cap Group's" air missions.  Those are more suited for larger groups of player's flying together.)  Their difficulty ratings are as follows:

   Easy - Either a few non-retaliatory aircraft, or a single fighter or two with guns only. (Vietnam and Modern enemies may have IR missiles)

   Medium - One or more retaliatory aircraft.  Short range missiles possible.

   Hard - Multiple retaliatory aircraft with possibility of both short and long range missiles.

   For “Large CAP Group’s” all difficulties have A-A missiles.

 

Mission List:

- Unattended Depots: 4 Missions

- Easy Missions: 9 Missions (2 are long distant)

- Medium Missions: 10 Missions (3 are long distant)

- Hard Missions: 9 Missions (2 are long distant)

- Very Hard Missions: 6 Missions (all are long distant)

- Strike Missions:  4 Missions

- Rescue / Transport: 4 Missions

- Air-Air Missions: 7 Genres, with 3 missions inside each (4 in Bombers/Transports)



 

AWAC's is available at 257Mhz (Chan 2 for aircraft that need it, Chan G for Viggen)  AWAC is set to Immortal and Invisible.

 

Tanker aircraft are KC-135’s
    Texaco operates a boom.  Freq 277Mhz (Chan 3)
    Arco operates 2 Drogue Baskets.  Freq 279Mhz (Chan 4)

Tankers are set to Invisible.  If the tanker runs out of fuel, or is destroyed, a new one will spawn (only 2 additional spawns for each tanker).

Hi Apache600! Thank you so much for these missions. They're exactly what my friends and I need for training up new pilots as well as refining the skills of our better ones!

 

I do have a little question about the Persian Gulf Variable mission, which we ran during our last group flight this past Saturday. About 12 of us were flying on the server at the time, and every time any of us went anywhere near the carrier group everyone on the server got huge frame drops and lag which would last for several minutes. I tested this again the next day in single-player and got the same effect. Its very noticeable for regular players, and virtually stopped the sim for those of us flying in VR. 

 

Since then I tried to look at the mission in the editor to see if there was anything I could do with my extremely limited knowledge. I had intended to break the fleet up and spread out the 3 carriers along an East-West line with about 50nm separation to see if that would mitigate the problem, but the editor wouldn't let me move the ships, so I'm assuming that's something to do with the way the mission is built/scripted. The next thing I thought of was to reduce the size of the carrier group, so as a first step I deleted the Admiral Kusnetzov (along with its compliment of SU-33s, but that can't be helped. None of us fly the -33 in our group anyway.) and loaded the mission again. This time the sim remained smooth throughout single-player testing. We're hoping to run another multiplayer test over the coming weekend. Hopefully the changes I made won't break any of the scripts.

 

Do you think this is due to having too many carriers in close proximity, or is it more likely that the Admiral Kusnetzov is bugged in some way? Is there a more suitable workaround to the one I've tried? Also, if you believe this isn't a mission issue then I was wondering if I should submit a possible bug report to ED. We had many other issues during the mission as well, though I'm given to believe that they are DCS-related rather than mission-related. For example, while running the long-range mission at Shiraz we ran into these problems and more:

 

- A-10C targeting systems lost all elevation data, so all markpoints  and TGP designations were useless.

- Any Mavericks fired into the target area ignored their locked targets and flew into the perimeter fence.

- F-18 TGPs sometimes wouldn't ground-stabilise correctly, sometimes jumping far off target randomly.

- On my returning to the carrier from my third sortie I couldn't find the carrier using TACAN on 55X. The server had been running for about 6 hours at this point, and I'm wondering if the carrier reached the end of its route and deactivated(?)

 

The error rate seemed to compound as time went on. A first sortie might go alright, but the next one could throw up all sorts of system errors. I fully expect most if not all of these to be issues with DCS itself rather than your mission, but I thought I'd tell you about them in case you wanted to have a look and have any insights.

   Thanks for giving the mission a shot, and glad to hear you enjoyed it.  
The issue you ran into with frame-rate drops is odd.  I made the PG variable as light as I could with Naval units because in the past, I had this issue with large fleets.  Ex. in my original Normandy Variable mission, the Fleet had a sizable escort.  I reduced that considerably because of the FPS hit.   But in PG variable, I have not seen any problem, and I've been running it frequently in getting it ready for an update.
   There's no script binding the ships to that particular spot. I wonder, were you possibly selecting the aircraft on the ship, and not the ship itself?  Separating the fleet would help, but I don't know how far the boats would have to be apart (it would be up to your graphics settings I guess) But I'm glad to hear that removing the Kuznetsov did the trick for you.
    So, your long range run ... nothing I've done inside the editor should have impacted the ability of aircraft sensors.  That would be a DCS anomaly, though those are some weird ones your listing there.  And the Carrier shouldn't be 55X.  Tarawa is 68X and CVN is 71X.
    Sorry I couldn't be of more help.   If you find these issues to be consistent and repeatable, you might have stumbled upon a report worthy bug.

Wow! Thanks for replying so soon! Having run the same mission as a group yesterday we did run into most of the issues again, which does lead me to believe that many of the problems are related to DCS itself. One of our pilots managed to kill the same lamp post 4 times with mavericks when they were definitely locked onto a vehicle 30m away from it and attacking from different directions. LOL

 

Regarding the carrier TACAN, yes I'm sorry, I meant to say 71X. I was thinking of a different mission I flew just before posting here. LOL. I'll have to check if this is reproduceable, but it seems that the carrier TACAN turned off for me around the time that I got the message about the fleet making a course reversal. When I eventually got back to the boat the fleet was still facing roughly northeast and had stopped moving.

 

As for the issues around navigation and sensors I'm going to have to remember to save some track files to send to ED for insight. We found a couple of other odd things yesterday. The final tank on one mission took no less that 7 direct hits from  GBU-12s and GBU-10s to finish off. Hopefully the next Open Beta update will sort out a few things behind the scenes.
