DCS 2.5.2.18144 Antialiasing comparison Nvidia

Hey folks. I tried to figure out which of the AA settings are working and what kind of results i get. I made some screenshots with a third party screenshot tool because the ingame screenshot function sometimes dont captures the AA.

I used the Nvidia Inspector tool to see which functions are working and my conclusion is that only FXAA seems to have effect on the AA. Also i tried to use the Nvidia MFAA function but it seems to have no effect.

I will mention that this is NOT VR related only 2D

My resolution is 3440x1440 and all made with the Nvidia Driver : 388.31 WHQL ( this is for me the best running driver atm)

For my Rig the Only FXAA or the Only MSAA 2x option are working fine. But this thread should only show the comparison between the different options.

Here are the follwoing screenshots.

Note:

Nvidia Antialiasing Setting did not with DirectX11 and above.

Thanks for that good Info :) And we also have the picture that this is for sure not working :)

I try to show that some functions arent working with pictures because mostly what we see in the discussions about Antialiasing is only written without any pictures as proof.

Nvidia DCS profile is heavy aged and way outdated (old DCS: Black Shark 1), it would need cooperation between Eagle Dynamics and Nvidia to create a new up to date DCS World profile.

99% of the so called Nvidia anti aliasing IT WORKS !!! claims are placebo

I wonder what it would take to get a new profile. I am at 21:9 resolution getting 50-60Fps with about 60% usage. Would love a proper driver.

yes,

because since DCS: Black Shark 1 the graphic engine of DCS World got heavy changes and 2.5 introduced also a new shader method

also the GPU's did have several changes since the times of good old DCS: Black Shark 1 :smilewink:

so the facts do tell me these claims can't work ...

the AA flag "0x00000000" of this old profile is incompatible with the new 2.5 engine

you may read a little here: https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/nvidia-anti-aliasing-guide-updated.357956/

it's up to NVIDIA and Eagle Dynamics to change this situation

Can confirm that only the "enhance" option works in the nvidia CP. Meaning you have to have some kind of AA enabled in DCS (MSAA or SSAA).

In the old days (pre 2.5) AA by nvidia CP gave better fps.

  • 2 years later...

I figured a serie of quite smooth looking settings out of NVIDIA control panel in combination with Steam VR and DCS in game settings, but FPS penalty is heavy and I still have some issues in high contrast especially low light while looking at the HUD.

I had to reduce anti-aliasing from  X 8 to X 4 to make it remotely playable without too much jitter, but I recon it would work with a faster GPU such as a 2020 or one of the new Gen Nvidia or AMD, in those screenshot settings are where I left them when I decided to hit the sac last night:

Condisering the impact on Frame Rate, I've been focusing in reducing Frame Time in Windows and Nvidia Control Panel, as well as pushing my 1080 Ti VRAM and Core clocks to (safe) limits in Afterburner (No Core Voltage tweak), to make sure, I used 3D Mark Fire Strike Ultra (3840 X 2160 MSSA 2 X), I'm up to the point where the card won't go further without crashing but my GPU is stable and Max temp never goes above 76°, my cooling solutions are quiet good.

I also tried to set my MSAA to ZERO in DCS and use a Steam VR resolution setting from 150% down to 125% with DCS MSAA from X 2 to X 1, it worked better visualy for me than the game MSAA settings at  X 2 only when it comes to anti-aliasing but there are side effects like most of what can be expected from extreme setting starting with jitter and no real blur effect, instead I'd see two F-15 in one when they pass overhead. It is possible to get this game to look real smooth, tough.

I'm still working on it, and it's just a start so don't expect a miracle solution but it might be a begining of a way to get smoother picture int the game, for the moment I still have to play around with Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames from X 4 and other slittle tricks I can find to make it even better looking without loosing to much playability.

Note that I'm not after 90 FPS, instead I'm content with 40 + and a better looking game, tests were conducted with F-15 C (training in mission folder), F-15C Training 030A  & B: Cold start, Taxi & Take Off both basic and advanced and F-15C Training 05 Visual Landing.

Can you get us some screenshots showing that these AA settings applied to SteamVR work correctly?  I'd just test it but I'm at work :).

That's pretty  good thinking BTW IMO :)...  Generally those settings don't apply to DCS...  but applying them to Steam VR might be an interesting workaround for some stuff :).  I like it if it works :).
