Server News:

 

* Operation Sukhumi - The Beginning is now offline.

 

* Operation Mountain Peaks is back online:

- Bf-109's were removed and with that from the server completely.

- Added I-16's based at road base marked on the F10 map.

- P-51's no longer operate from Maykop airbase. They were moved to a road base marked on the F10 map.

 

* The new mission, operation Last Man Standing, goes online tonight after Mountain Peaks.

Hey everyone,

 

since I got the Mig21 I wanted to try that server. 

 

On the attempt to connect I was told "only unmodified game". So I disabled all my OVGME stuff like skins, sound mods, airplanes, etc. Everything. It still won´t let me connect. Since I´m running VR I´m using the VR shader mod, found here in the forums.

 

Could this be the problem or what else could prevent me from joining the server?

Welcome to the Cold War server, mate!

 

I use the MiG-21 sound mod myself plus the Caucasus trees mod (which I can only recommend!!!) among other things and my game works just fine. It's rather hard to tell what's causing the problem without being at your pc, I guess. Maybe others could help you out.

On the server list page you can click the integrity check button in the top to see what’s the issue exactly. And if you are using Steam repairing the game through Steam often helps

Thanks, I will try 

 

First I have to get my DCS running again, after all the messing around... 😅

 

Edit: Thanks, reichenwald! It seemed that a texture from a SU-27 fromm 2017 broke the integrety check... Now I have to work, but tomorrow I will give the server a try.

Wait, are you talking about the Better Trees mod from Taz1004 ? I thought the IC would fail with this mod installed.

I'm gonna download this right now if it passes IC !

Yes. It passes the IC every single time. And if it doesn't, simply restart the game. And it makes the Caucasus map look like heaven or something. Highly recommended.

Hey all, I am new to this server, but not new to DCS. Got 200 odd hours up on Storm of War server. Looks like this server is fantastic, many thanks! I am trying to get a hang of the server rules before I fly too much. I only just stumbled across a discussion on discord about speed limit of Viggen on this server. 
My big question: is there a complete list of what is ok and what is not? Apologies if I overlooked it! Just trying to do the right thing here….

@Alpenwolf Don’t think it’s fair to Conker4 where he’s playing a module he paid for with his own money, your allowing the plane in the server still. If you don’t want people abusing these “bugs” take the plane out of your server. Problem solved. My opinion it’s pretty childish to ban someone when you can solve the problem yourself by taking the plane out of the server until it gets fixed.

Dude, tell you're kidding. Please.
Going down that road litterally means taking out :
the Gazelle because of its UFO flight model 

- the mig21 because somehow AIM9 tracks better when its AB is off
- the mi24 because Petrovitch is an all-seeing god and you need a nuke to kill the thing

etc.

I won't comment on ban policy or its fairness but as far as I understand it, it usually doesn't happen for an innocent first offence.
If players take all aspect missiles just because some bug or a mission editor oversight allowed them at a warehouse, it's on everyone to play fair and not take them, same thing for everything else (Viggen speed included)
All the usual players on this server know the rules (rear aspect missiles only,...) don't reverse the roles here.

Check out the main post of this thread for server rules. The most important thing is to use SRS and communicate with others. Other issues and mistakes happen all the time but if you ask around there is quite often someone to answer your questions on SRS or the chat window while in game. Also, you can always share your thoughts, feedback and ask questions here if you want and they shall be considered and answered.

@Alpenwolf I didn't get to play a lot of Last Man Standing tonight (DCS decided to crash a lot this week) but it was a lot of fun.
Tried a few rocket runs with F86, F5 and Viggen and got shredded by those WW2 AAA guys in all 3 tries 🤬 (same in Mountain Peaks) I may be really bad but it was impossible to be in launch parameters without being sniped. If you don't intend to tone down their skill i'd gladly appreciate some advice !

The only bug I could find for Blue was the Gazelle M variant Hot3 missiles missing from both airfields.

EDIT : this Hot3 missile thing must be dur to the new rotation glitch, we'll see on the next one

For the new mission:

 

- 2 out of red's 4 airbases can easily be disabled by a single well-placed bomb. Not partially, not made more difficult to use, but outright disabled. They're already marginal for MiGs, but one bomb in the middle of the runway or between runway and parking spots is all that's needed - you saw yourself what happened.

- The 2 airbases above are also where the 21s primarily spawn, making it very easy to take them out of the fight, which then leads to:

- Red's only "effective" strike aircraft is the MiG-21 in this mission. The MiG-19 has a very light A/G load, and the Hind is potent but both vulnerable due to low speed and lack of missiles and also more optimised for killing point targets or buildings, not denying use of an airfield.

- The MiG-21 can, at best, make 2 large craters out of a single pass with either S-24s or BetABs.

- A substantial number of MiG-21s spawn at an airfield that is within 20km of a major blue airbase, and said airfield is the shortest and narrowest runway red has. Easy meat.

 

On the other hand, over on blue:

 

- The Viggen is a specialised strike aircraft and is very, very good at it. One pass with high drag bombs will delete either of red's two small airfields (not the objective, the whole airfield), two or maybe three passes will mostly knock out red's largest field.

- The mountains north of Akrotiri make a very effective screen that blue can push aircraft around without being spotted, something red lacks.

- Pathos, Larnaca, and Akrotiri are all large airports/airbases with good sized runways, multiple taxiways, and large parking areas separated across the length of the field.

- Pathos is quite far out of the way.

 

Basically, even without a team stack, blue just need to have 2 working brain cells to combine "airfields are the target, it's open season" with "their airfields are nearby and very small", send a Viggen or two at each at mission start, and red will not be able to effectively do anything for the rest of the mission. By contrast if red go murder mode at mission start and decide to deny blue of their airbases, it will take several MiGs per airfield just to have any effect at all - one to do the runway, one to do each taxiway, then whatever's left to try hit parking spots or fuel or ammo. The maths doesn't really work out, even if red choose to ignore Lamatakia first. When airfields are open game and especially when the objectives are on the airfields themselves, it's a pretty natural conclusion to knock the field out first, then mop up the objective after.

 

I'm not sure what the best fix would be - maybe making two airbases "safe" like in most missions, probably Gecitkale and Pathos, but it'd be hard to police as not everyone reads the briefing and people might get confused in a mission where the objective is blowing up airbases. The other simple solution would be removing the Viggen or heavily restricting its weapons, but I don't think that'd be fair on blue and the F-5 has nearly as much carpet bombing potential itself, albeit with less accuracy. Even giving red the Su-25 wouldn't really change much, as it's much slower and more vulnerable, and so less likely to get through to the airfields.

The problem is that if it has R-60Ms, at least for now, that means the 21s do too, which then means blue need their AIM-9P5s and Rb 74s back, at which point you've come full circle and the Su-25 is back to being in a difficult situation. The 25 is no slouch defending itself with its gun, but the issue is that it's more likely to be intercepted, and when it is, it'll have to jettison all its stores to survive - effectively a mission kill, even if the Sushka survives the encounter. It solves the "bombload" part of the equation for red, but leaves the "opportunity" side wide open, IMO.

 

I like the ability to actually attack airfields, but the problem is that it needs to be balanced against how quickly you can knock one out, and what portion of your aircraft are no longer usable because they're stuck at a bombed-out one. It might honestly work better with larger spaces between and more evenly-sized airbases, but then you lose the Cyprus setting, which in itself is part of what makes the mission interesting IMO.

 

Definitely one to think about over the next few days, I guess.

All the above went through my mind while designing the mission. Very thoughtful, mate.

 

It was obvious to me that Red has the smaller airbases (except maybe for Ercan with 9 slots, which is small still by comparison) and 2-5 slots at the most. So I kind of, and very naively, hoped for Blue players to stick with the objective instead of bombing the runways. Kingsfield airbase for instance has 2 slots for MiG-21's and nothing else! The parking area is very small and even the runway is not that long and just as wide/narrow as any highway on the map. One bomb is all it takes for Blue while neglecting the actual objective of destroying vital structures at that airbase.

 

Yesterday's session was a bit tough for Red due to an overall unbalance in the teams. It was mostly 2:1 for Blue in the first 1-2 hours and it continued to being so throughout the entire mission with various periods of having a bit of balance. And even if balanced I checked out the players' list every time and what I saw was mainly F-5's vs MiG's of all types and helicopters. So Red didn't really have air superiority and was often jumped by F-5's while striking enemy airbases. In addition, most fights happened at Blue airbases so you had Blue AA's and AAA's firing at you and during that we also discovered that Blue MANPAD's (Stingers) were way more effective than Red Igla's. Also, the Chaparrals were more effective than Strela-9's. According to the tacview kill-list Stingers scored a total of 16 kills while Igla's 2 kills only! Chaparrals scored 8 kills and Strela-9's ZERO! Yes, Red were more often at Blue airbases than the other way around but through JTAC I saw on multiple occasions how ineffective Red IR defences are.

 

Oh, in addition, I thought Red would actually wreck while having the more powerful helicopters so the percentage of structures that must be destroyed for Red at Blue airbases is higher by 20% than it is for Blue. My bad!

 

It was a good session and a very new one in all the challenges involved. I'll make some adjustments for sure.

I really enjoyed the mission yesterday during the first 2 hours, but easy to say from my perspective, I was on blue side. 🙂 

Just a small comment:

Oh, yes! I forgot about the part of Mike-Delta being your GCI and the bugger's got nothing else better to do than dragging every Blue unit and rally it against me.

 

He was with me on TeamSpeak as it's quite often the case and admitted it as it's quite often the case too. I might change my name just because of him 😉

Server News:

 

Operation Last Man Standing:

- Moved 24 x MiG-21's from Pinarbashi to Ercan airbase.

- With that MiG-21's are now available at all 4 airbases.

- Moved 16 x MiG-19's from Ercan to Pinarbashi airbase. 16 x MiG-19's are still available at Ercan airbase.

- Reduced the amount of structures Red has to destroy at Blue airbases so now it's even. Prior to this change Red was supposed to destroy more structures than Blue.

- Modified some advanced options for AA's and AAA's to hopefully have them perform better.

Made another video for the cold war server because I have been having so much fun on there lately. The Mig-19 is a beast! As a Mig-21 driver, it feels great to jump in a Mig that can aggressively maneuver

I asked SeaQuark admin of Korea! 1952 server on how he gives custom srs radio freqs for planes with limited freq band. For example he set radio freq 270 for P51s in his mission and it works for srs! I think it would work for any module and you can set any frequency for any preset radio station

 

So what you need to is:

1. Backup of the mission miz file (never to safe ;)

2. Open mission miz file using 7-zip archive

3.  unpack the  file called 'mission' (which is inside miz file)

4. open copied 'mission' file with eg notepad++

5. Find airframe slot name, 

6. few lines above of slot name you have radio preset frequencies, change them to your preference (251 for P51 in Battle Over Sukhumi Unleashed perhaps? ;)

7. Copy (drag and drop) saved mission file to miz archive

8. load mission in dcs

9. profit $$

The P-51's have their own freq. just like MiG-15's. So you suggest this to have them all work on the same freq.? Because the EWR for these two exceptional radio devices (MiG-15 and P-51) does work actually if that's your concern?

My concern is lack of comms with rest of guys. Sometimes it good to talk/coordinate with other guys. So one preset for ewr and another to talk to others 😛
