F18 GUN SIGHT ACCURACY

Badger633

Recommended Posts

Been practicing using the gun. It appears that the gun sight is not that accurate. When in range very often the bullets will land well past the target. The accuracy is nothing like the A10c where the bullets land where the piper is pointed bang on.

Is the f18 gun not very accurate or am I missing something but I am following procedure in wags video.

I am using vr but tried in 2d also, same thing, I will try and get a track. I cannot hit a single vehicle.

Radar is on, doing just the same as the video issued. Cannot understand it.

RESOLVED My mistake : I was firing the gun as the target wheel was unwinding in its final 360 degrees. The gun is only accurate when the "in Range" words are flashing. Fir before and they land short and after they land long. Obvious really !!

Have noted there seems to be a lot of round dispersion but this covered in another thread.

Happened to me once, couldn't reproduce it and track is useless due to a carrier launch.

But anyway here are the pictures. Speed, altitude, angle, positive G, negative G, none of those mattered, the gun reticle was always too low.

I have this problem sometimes too. I had dropped 8 x MK82 in one go (AUTO 8-1-100) and selected the gun in AG mode to destroy the last truck and my CCIP gun reticle was way off. My last few rounds in MAN mode were closer.

TRACK FILE ATTACHED and working for me to show the problem.

same problem, especially with gun and rockets.

CCIP pipper (sometimes) totally wrong.

Also no track, but after dropping some Mk82's in ccip, using tacan and waypoint navigation (no idea if related but being thorough) my gun ccip was no longer accurate, it seemed glued to the vv in a low angle dive, gun rounds went quite high.

for me, rockets went left and slightly down compared to CCIP pipper.

Gun went high compared to pipper.

ok, just tried quick test again.

In the first pass i use rockets, CCIP accuracy: ok!

Second pass with gun, accuracy: ok!

Third Pass with rockets accuracy: ok!

Fourth pass, rockets: now the CCIP pipper became less accurate (impact slightly on the right respect to pipper).

Fifth pass, rockets: same behaviour, CCIP less accurate

Last pass with gun, accuracy returns ok again.

My sensation is that some high G manouvers tend to influence the CCIP reticle accuracy

I've attached my track file.

I cant remember the gun ever being accurate in my case. Its always the last weapon I choose, after having dropped some ordnance - usually Mk82, 83, 84, but also Mk20, CBU in CCIP. The gun rounds always hit way long. Tried many different approaches, always the same for me.

- Jack of many DCS modules, master of none.

- Personal wishlist: F-15A, F-4S Phantom II, JAS 39A Gripen, SAAB 35 Draken, F-104 Starfighter, Panavia Tornado IDS.

It seems the gun reticle is very often in different position after slecting A/G mode and GUN, see pics below. Screens 01-03 are from same flight, Instant Action: Hornet Conventional Bombing. Other 2 are from my custom missions. Very often even in my custom missions reticle is OK, and I believe at least once in Instant Action: Hornet A/G Gun and Rockets the reticle was quite off - but I do not have any screenshots.

I have clean DCS release version 2.5.2.19273

If not "IN RNG" the pipper is set to a fixed distance, I believe. CCIP then calculates the "impact" point of that point in space according to the aircraft's attitude and speed, again, I would believe. So AoA and air speed should have an impact on where the pipper is placed - so I am not sure if your screen shots are really showing a bug.

But then again, I am only trying to make sense of what I know - which is not too much, tbh. :D

Hi Flagrum,

I think I know what you mean. But problem is, that even if range counter and IN RNG message appears, reticle itself moves just a little bit (probably according attitude, AoA and speed as you said), but definetly not enough. What I ment was that is kinda strange that reticle appears at very different position even before commencing an attack (probably before CCIP computing even begins - reticle turns from thin to thick once you point nose against ground, that should be begining of CCIP computing). Once pipper appears above speed and altitude boxes, aiming is very precise. But once pipper appears below, rounds land far behind target, even with IN RNG message (as on razo+r´s screenshot). Pipper just wont go "up" enough.

This occurs very randomly, but I will try to make more screenshots later. I will also try if reticle apperas at different position if selcting MAN, instead of CCIP.

Now kinda funny thing:

I finally rembered to save a track of flight where gun pipper was displayed low and bullets flew well above the target. I was just checking the track, but in replay the gun pipper works perfectly. So instead of showing how bullets fly well above the target, with pipper right on target and IN RNG, replay shows pipper above the target and bullets flying where pipper aims...

After second gun run, I was switching from CCIP to MAN and back. While in mission I remebered how pipper moved up while swicthing from CCIP to MAN, and down while from MAN to CCIP, in replay it moves the other way round.

So, at least to me, gun pippers is displayed kinda randomly.

Note to trk: It is custom mission, gun attacks starts +/- after 15 mins (08:45 in game time)

I'm finding the greatest problem with the gunsight is air to air in multiplayer. It must be lag or something, but the gunsight jumps around so much I can't even use it.

I usually have around 200 ping as the servers I use are in Europe (I'm in Canada). I don't have an issue in single player.

Solution for A-G gun is just wrong, it always go long, sometimes on level A-A especially at close range it goes way above as well
