Alpenwolf Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 I don't own all DCS modules but I was wondering which modules can work with JTAC. Just curious. Anyone knows? HACA DYCA Discord Cold War 1947 - 1991 You can help me with keeping up the server via PayPal donations: hokumyounis@yahoo.com
MrDieing Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 In theory they all do. Its just a question of which plane is able to carry a laser guided weapon, as a JTAC works with a laser designator. The M2000C and F-5E are able to carry them and rely on a JTAC (or buddy) to lase the target for them. Its still pretty hard to get the GBU to track the laser as you still have to guess when to release and take various factors in account. The A-10C and the Harrier can also work with a JTAC, these are a bit more complex modules but they also give you a bigger hit chance. In the end any aircraft that can recieve coordinates or a MGRS grid can find and kill a target through a JTAC, its just that some planes were designed to work with them :) ''Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction.'' Alpenwolf Posted June 10, 2018 Author Posted June 10, 2018 What about the Ka-50 and the Frogfoot? (I mean here in the simulator) HACA DYCA Discord Cold War 1947 - 1991 You can help me with keeping up the server via PayPal donations: hokumyounis@yahoo.com
Yurgon Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 What about the Ka-50 and the Frogfoot? (I mean here in the simulator) For the Ka-50, not by default. There's a Ka-50 JTAC mod, but it seems not to work with 2.5 unfortunately. I'm certain the A-10C supports it by default, and fairly certain M-2000C does so as well. As for the other modules, you might just have to place a JTAC or two in a fresh mission and then toss in all the airframes and check if the JTAC radio menu shows up, and if you can establish comms. @MrDieing: CAS isn't all about LGBs. ;) JTACs are certainly happy when precision guided weapons are at their disposal, but anything from guns, rockets, and missiles to dumb and smart bombs can be used. Heck, according to the definition, a B-1 could launch Cruise Missiles and provide CAS from 200 nm away. ;) It really depends on the task at hand, and what's available.
kylekatarn720 Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 In theory they all do. Its just a question of which plane is able to carry a laser guided weapon, as a JTAC works with a laser designator... :) Just to clarify, a jtac is the fella who has the authority for terminal attack control. If we quote the JFIRE doc: "A JTAC is a qualified (certified) Service or coalition member who, from a forward position, directs the action of combat aircraft engaged in CAS and other offensive air operations. A qualified and current JTAC is recognized across the Department of Defense as capable and authorized to perform terminal attack control. Terminal attack control is the authority to control the maneuver of and grant weapons release authority to attacking aircraft." Guided munitions are not needed for a jtac to do its job. Their job is to help the CAS player find the target, tell them how to maneuver during their engagement, which weapons to use and how to use them. Laser designators, smoke markers, data-link connections etc. are just tools they use to make the job easier.
Alpenwolf Posted June 11, 2018 Author Posted June 11, 2018 Good clarification. So basically a JTAC could be just one soldier hiding somewhere and providing information over the radio. Laser equipment and other devices plus a proper qualification are just to make it easier for the JTAC himself and the flight taking part in the attack. Understood.
