Sandman1330 Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 As the title says, I'm finding I can't get 90 FPS, even with settings all the way down to low. In fact, I seem stuck at 45 FPS (ASW off) unless I look up at the sky, then I see 80 or 90. I used the Persian Gulf Carrier Takeoff instant action for testing. I took off and flew overland for a bit, high altitude and low. Even on lowest settings, I rarely see over 45 FPS. Predictably, at such low settings, my GPU usage is very low and CPU usage is high. In fact, I can ramp up GPU heavy settings pretty high (MSAA x4, PD 1.3, textures etc on high) before I even see the GPU get close to 100% and see a change in framerate. I was wondering if anyone else with a similar system had similar results? I'm tempted to upgrade to the Ryzen 2700X, but didn't think I was THAT CPU limited until I tried out this test. I find it very strange I'd be unable to get 90FPS with all settings on lowest with this system... I have already deleted FXO / Metashader folders. Thoughts? dburne Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Yep pretty much about the same here on my rig. Same instant action mission. Does not bother me really though, as I still get a smooth experience even with ASW off. I just turn off the fps counter. BeastyBaiter Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 i7-8700k at 4.9GHz and 1080 ti, same issue. The free and SoH maps give 45 fps even with lowest settings, NTTR does 90 though. Problem is cpu usage (100% on single core) System specs: i5-10600k (4.9 GHz), RX 6950XT, 32GB DDR4 3200, NVMe SSD, Reverb G2, WinWing Super Libra/Taurus, CH Pro Pedals.

Problem is cpu usage (100% on single core) Even with such a high end CPU? Good to know. Sounds like upgrading to a 2700X probably wouldn’t net much increase then... The only real issue is looking 90* left or right and seeing terrain or other aircraft blurring (like during dogfights). Sometimes makes combat employment a bit tougher. ASW helps but causes some artifacting or stuttering. lemoen Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Normal. I think ED has said that a big bottleneck is DirecX calls of which you probably have 2x as many in VR. These calls are done with your CPU, in a single thread. We don't have fast enough CPUs to do this currently in DCS. You'll have to wait for them to move to Vulcan before this will be a reality.

In short, I wouldn't upgrade any hardware based on this. You can swing a dead cat in this forum and read basically any thread with a 2nd page and it's about this type of thing. I'll leave it up to you if you want to dive in there, but suffice to say your best bet is turning off MSAA and bump your PD to 1.5. I think there might be some sort of unintentional issue bundled in the beta that is locking the frame rate to 45 (aside from ASW or Async Reproj). If you want to see where your system is at, try the stable branch with deferred shading off and then you can MSAA till your hearts content. i get 90 fps EASY in stable. Purely speculating but maybe ED was trying to manage it's own frame rate redundant to the VR sdk/api. Usually that is where the locking to 45 fps would occur, but to your point it seems to happen even with ASW off.
