Habu_69 Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 I seem to have a problem with NWS after trapping, that I did not notice prior to latest update. I set flaps up, fold wings, hook up, set NWS HI and give a little throttle, then more throttle, then more throttle. Jet will finally start to roll at 78% RPM, but swings hard right. Left full rudder will counteract the right swing, but just barely and I hear heavy wind noise like you hear at 400 knots. I have Crosswind rudders and checking their calibration shows perfect centering. Controller options show no unusual axis tuning. Outside view of A/C show nothing unusual. Hook is up and nosewheel responds correctly to rudder commands. Yet something is clearly not normal. Any ideas?
maxTRX Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 I noticed something different with driving around the deck. What was your WOD. How fast was your carrier going and what was the wind setting?
Teetwo Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 I found that when I have a problem with NWS that if I cycle it off and on it seems to work well afterwards. It's just the initial implementation that seems to have an issue for me on occasions.
BSS_Sniper Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 (edited) I think there’s something going on with the carrier. Myself and the guys I fly with can’t really taxi around in the deck. We just slide, can’t really turn. Habu_69 Posted June 23, 2018 Author Posted June 23, 2018 Ahhhhh. Yeah, I had anti-skid on! Well CVN was making 25 knots into wind and WOD about 32.
pete_auau Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 I think if you have the carrier speeds set to faster that 19 knots you will get the sliding around issue. yep makes it hard to taxi around the carrier anything above 19 or so
Habu_69 Posted June 23, 2018 Author Posted June 23, 2018 Ahhhhh. Yeah, I had anti-skid on! Well CVN was making 25 knots into wind and WOD about 32. Flew a few traps and made sure anti-skid off on the deck. Made only a minor difference, if any, in NWS behavior. The issue appears to be the implementation of the static inertia required to get the jet moving. Once it starts rolling NWS behaves normally, but then of course you are at 80% rpm and zipping over the deck like Mario Andretti. If you hit the brakes to stop your velocity it then takes 78-80% rpm to get rolling again, even ensuring nosewheel is in a straight-ahead position. Maybe I will post a .trk
dburne Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 I really have no issue with NWS. After landing on the carrier, I fold up the wings and engage HI for nosewheel. I then taxi around on the deck going to rear, then line up and get on launch catapult. After landing I give it just enough throttle to get the plane rolling, then back off the throttle some to where I am at a slow decent taxi speed. I keep it there until I am approaching the catapult then I get a little slower and ease it up into place. And yes I use F2 view to get into position on the catapult. Seems to work quite well for me. erautour Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 I noticed this yesterday but not on Wednesday or Thursday. My issue may have been lag. I’ll do some testing today and see how she behaves.
maxTRX Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 Yep, it seems like it's related to wind/carrier motion. Even after pre-tension on the catapult my jet's nose drifted couple of feet left. I was still able to launch. I did expect some issues though since I set some monster winds and the pitching deck almost made me puke - looked awesome in VR! I also noticed an occasional sliding when fully stopped on the deck. Perhaps I should have been chucked and chained. It really was not a flying weather! The deck crew didn't like my sliding either. When I was re-fueling and re-arming, this jerky sounding voice came up: "What are you doing!?" I almost jumped up, raised my hands... hey I'm not touching any buttons! Well, the crew was obviously reacting to my slight occasional motion on deck.
Habu_69 Posted June 23, 2018 Author Posted June 23, 2018 OK, I reduced WOD in same mission to 19 knots (12 CVN into wind and 7 knots wind), no other changes, and NWS behavior returned to normal. Curious.
Habu_69 Posted June 23, 2018 Author Posted June 23, 2018 NWS Behavior in high WOD NWS behavior appears to get weird when WOD exceeds about 19 knots, with last week's patch. Observable in Carrier Takeoff Quick Missions. In moderately high WOD, about 30 knots, 78-80% power is needed to get aircraft rolling and nose swings right with no commanded right rudder.
