Blue Angels plane went down today..

Recommended Posts

Blue Angel #6 is piloted by Lt. Kevin Davis. I am not confirming that it was he that died, but more than likely that is the case. Lt. Davis was an ex-Tomcat pilot. This is very unfortunate. I know the Angels pride themselves on never having had a mishap. It is a shame that they will no longer be able to cite that.

May he rest in peace.

The Blue Angels have had mishaps in the past, the most recent fatal one coming in 1999.

None the less, it is still very unfortunate and our prayers and condolences go out to the Blue Angels family and the deceased pilot's family and friends.

-----------------------------------------

The crash took place in the final minutes of the air show, said Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Walley, a Blue Angel pilot. The pilots were doing a maneuver which involved all six planes joining from behind the crowd to form a Delta triangle, said Lt. Cmdr. Garrett D. Kasper, spokesman for the Blue Angels. One plane did not rejoin the formation.

Walley said the name of the pilot would not be released until relatives were notified of the death.

A Navy statement said the pilot had been on the team for two years — and it was his first as a demonstration pilot.

My prayers are with His Family, Friends and Team members... RIP

Looks like (according to wikipedia) #6 clipped a pine tree causing it to go down, it slid for a few hundred yards after it hit the ground smashing trough homes and vehicles. Confirmed as Lt. Kevin J Davis.

On April 21, 2007, one of the Blue Angels' jets crashed during the final minutes of an air show in Beaufort, South Carolina.[2] One fatality has been confirmed, now identified as the pilot by the Blue Angels organization spokesman. [3] It was reported early on that the aircraft had clipped a tall pine tree near Shanklin Road in Burton about 4 p.m. which caused it to go down outside Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. The plane slid for two hundred to three hundred yards after it hit the ground crashing through homes and vehicles.[4]. Seconds after the crash, several rescue helicopters and emergency vehicles went to the crash site, where much smoke was visible.[5][6]. As of the end of the day, April 21, the Navy has yet to release the name of the pilot, in accordance with Department of Defense policy. [7] However, spectators at the air show did not see the #6 aircraft land after the incident. The #6 pilot, the opposing solo, for the 2007 season was listed as LCDR Kevin J. Davis of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.[8][9]

Witnesses reported that after a spectacular performance all 6 planes were making their final turns into the landing pattern when Blue Angel #6 flew low over a tree-line, 2-3 miles away from center stage, behind the audience. The plane turned back towards the airfield and appeared to clip a tall pine tree during the unexpectedly sharp turn. The next thing visible was a large plume of black smoke, which Blue Angel #1 immediately shifted course to circle while the others landed.

Is breaking the laws of gravity illegal?

Thats a real shame. Ever since Ramstein, here there have been very strict rules governing the height of aircraft not just in the display box but above populated areas outside of that region. Since then crashes at shows have only occured within the display area, but of course that has still lead to the death of pilots.

It seems this incident could have been much worse, apparantly with 8 injuries on the ground.
