I would like to have a vehicle to drive around and explore the airfields instead of taxing my aircraft around to see whats there.

You could also just use spectator mode. Go into the F10 map and position where you want to start. Zoom in to get a close up of the ground, otherwise you start very high up, and the press <LCtrl><F111> and you are in the virtual world.

 

The mouse points your direction, and the mouse-wheel controls acceleration; <NUM-5> stops you immediately.

 

The only thing you cannot do is strafe. You can't look in one direction, while moving to the side, for example. You can only move in the direction in which you are looking.
