What is the standard procedure for QFE setting under normal fli

So my question is: during a normal ferry flight where I have planned speed and altitude when would I actually set the QFE for each point so that I can keep the right alt during the flight. And I mean how actual Viggen pilots did it. Do I set the QFE of the next waypoint (eg. for B2 when crossing B1) or what? I couldn't find anything about it in the manual.

I guess its that you set the QFE of your starting airfield and keep your planned altitude relative to that location or you just use QNH and set your altitude relative to the sea level. I don't think that there is a point to change qfe on the fly unless you wanna attack something on the ground with weapons what needs accurate height data.

 

If you wanna keep the same height from the ground at your actual location you can still switch the altitude source to RHM and try to keep your desired height by watching the hud and make manual adjustments if needed.

 

But Its just my opinion and the way I am doing it but I am just an amateur simmer so I can be wrong. :D

 

I only change QFE during a "peaceful flight" if my destination airfield is different than the starting one so a new QFE has to be set for landing.

Well, what you say makes sense, except for that if I remember correctly, if I fly the airports QFE in for example "Cold and Dark" mission for Caucasus and follow the plan I will end up in side of a mountain at at least two points.

I guess you can use "terrain avoidance mode" (manual page 117) . I am not sure is that a campaign mission?

Well if you're at or above FL180 (18'000 or ~550 meters) you're supposed to set your altimeter to 29.92 inHg (I believe 1013 for meteric). So for higher altitude flight you'd do that, and just use your sectional map and flight planning to avoid hitting anything.

I am using some rules for flying the Viggen:

Considering I am on a ferry flight I set the QFE of the landing airfield when I start the descent or approach to that airfield.

Considering I am on a training flight and intend to land on the same airfield again I set the altimeter to zero before commencing take-off (this will show the QFE instantly in the Kolsman window) and then let it there until touchdown. This relates to aerobatic and show flights as well.

Considering I am on a mission where a weapon needs acurate QFE, I normally set the QFE of the M - waypoint (attack) during the cockpit preparation (this is just in order not to forget it when I am under pressure). I then use the standby altimeter to set the QFE of my starting airfield before take-off (taking into consideration if I have a malfunction during or right after take-off, maybe the RHM or something else which prevents me from accomplishing the mission) I can then land back and have a good altitude reference on my standby altimeter).

 

QNH is used primarily for following altitude constraints of different airspace classes. Since this is not really used in DCS I forget about QNH. :music_whistling:
