dburne Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 Guys, This may be just related right now to the new 1.29 version that is out on the Public Test Channel which I participate in. Just got home and was going to mess around in the Rift. Put the headset on, and nothing.Oculus Home did not start as it normally does when putting headset on. Got a warning from Windows a USB device had failed. Ok checked device manager, and showed the Rift Headset as having a problem and not connected. Ok so I start doing some troubleshooting, unplugged the headset hdmi and plugged back in. Unplugged the headset usb connector and plugged back in. Still nothing. Restarted the Oculus Rift service, still nothing. Tried again, nothing. Rebooted the pc and did all the above again, nothing. Was starting to pull my hair out thinking oh me please tell me my Rift did not die. Not sure how I could go a day or two without. Panic setting in. I thought what the hell, I launched Oculus Home manually from the desktop. Home launched, and there I was greeted at the Home screen showing the Rift headset not connected, with a message " Firmware Update Required". Click here to update firmware. Updated firmware, Rift restarted and all is well once again. Whew!! So anyway, if you run into the same thing, that is what it is about. You will need to launch Home manually and get the firmware update from within Home on your desktop. I am sure it likely is just for the 1.29 Public Test Channel for now, so unless you are enrolled for that it may not happen to you - yet. If that is the case though when it does get through testing and rolls out to the masses, it might happen to you then. I commented on the 1.29 PTC thread over on their forums, they really should have some warning pop up in the headset that a firmware update is required and to continue on monitor to get it. I am sure I will not be the only one that starts to panic when the headset is no longer working with no apparent reason. mdg106 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 got the same issue here, but could solve it by updating the graphic driver (nvidia)
Johnny Dioxin Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 I can't believe you went through all that troubleshooting! Please excuse my chuckling... I got the same with the black screen, but the first thing I did was start up Oculus Home on my desktop - seemed the logical thing to do, as that is what tells you if there's a problem, and sure enough, there was the firmware update notice right in front of me. I had been having nightmares of having to troubleshoot as you did (especially as my back is awful atm) but really - if there is ever something not right, always look in Home/Devices first. :) edit: oh and yes - the handling of this was very poor on Oculus' part. Rig: Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS; Ryzen 7800X3D ; 64GB DDR5 5600; RTX 4080; VPC T50 CM2 HOTAS; Pimax Crystal Light I'm learning to fly - but I ain't got wings With my head in VR - it's the next best thing!
