Sparky1b09 Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Hey everyone, I will receive my first VR in the mail tomorrow. I bought a Lenovo Explorer at what seems to be a very good price based on feedback from someone I know online who's dad uses one after not being as pleased with another brand as he had hoped. I'm not going to mention the other brand because I don't want this to turn into a " he doesn't know what he's talking about" kind of thread. I just want some outside feedback on this model if anyone can help. I also bought this one because the price was so good that if a much improved newer generation would come out soon, I can upgrade and not feel bad about the money I spent on this one. I will only use it for DCS so I have a couple of questions. Part of the reason his dad likes the Lenovo is because of the increased resolution. Has anyone else tried one of these and if so did you notice any improvement? I am in my 60's and wear glasses and figured any increase would be of a great help to me. He also said the headgear was much lighter and easier on his face. Secondly, does flying in VR make a difference in how easy or difficult you find certain tasks, like A-A refueling, ect.? Or is there not much difference in the difficulty, just better immersion? I have always found the users of this forum to be helpful and honest in their advice so thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Sparky
hansangb Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 I can't speak for the comfort of Lenovo, never having used it. But I think you'll find all aspects of flying to be easier with spacial awareness including tanking. If you are nearsighted, you will still need to wear glasses. So if your glasses don't fit, you'll need something like VR-LENS or similar. just google for VR Lens and you should find a few options. hsb HW Spec in Spoiler --- i7-10700K Direct-To-Die/OC'ed to 5.1GHz, MSI Z490 MB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3, NVMe+SSD, Win 10 x64 Pro, MFG, Warthog, TM MFDs, Komodo Huey set, Rverbe G1

Sparky1b09 Posted August 23, 2018 Author Posted August 23, 2018 Oh my gosh!!! I got it hooked up and working and was immediately amazed at the view from the cockpit just sitting on the tarmac. I actually, without thinking, tried to reach out and touch the F-18 dash. I felt like an idiot as soon as I did. But that is what it felt like. Then I taxied and it was even better, so I took off and when I went into a slow bank I first felt like I was going to fall out of my chair, then I felt just a tiny queasy and had to look at the dash to stop that feeling. I now need to start playing with my settings but this was amazing! I get a little screen door effect but in mission it goes away because I don't think about it. I'm going to go through these forums now and see what settings you guys are using to maximize performance. I think I'm going to like this!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Since this is my very first experience with VR I have nothing to compare it with. But in the F-18 cockpit, when I look directly at the color moving map I can see a bit past the canopy ejection handle on the left and the hook up/down lever on the right. Hope this helps. I was wondering about blurry images on the edges too and they don't seem bad at all, doesn't bother me at all. I had to increase the IPD in DCS to about 67. That made things clearer than the stock setting. Can someone please tell me how I can see my framerate. I would like to see how it's doing as I change things.

KidCharlemagne Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 It's good to see someone else using the Lenovo Explorer! I've been using mine in DCS for about a month now, and I have been very pleased overall. There are some issues with the SteamVR loading screen popping up here and there, but it has definitely been worth the investment. I've played DCS in an Oculus Rift as well, and I've found the explorer very similar to it. The FOV is definitely better in the explorer, and the addition of a few degrees of peripheral vision makes a big difference when you aren't thinking about it; The small sweet spot of the Explorer means you can't really focus on the additional screen space without adjusting the goggles, though. So it helps lessen the binocular feel of the headset, but it doesn't quite translate into more screen to look at. Given that the explorer is so cheap, however, I'd say it's definitely worth a buy if anyone is looking into a good starter VR headset. I would love to see some native WMR support for DCS next!
