VDV Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Is ATFLIR better than an A-10C's pod? And when we will get it?
tifafan Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Is ATFLIR better than an A-10C's pod? And when we will get it? NO,LITENING on A-10C is more advanced.
Freeroamer Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 NO,LITENING on A-10C is more advanced. Care to elaborate?
Sn8ke Posted August 25, 2018 Author Posted August 25, 2018 Care to elaborate? The Marine Corps ONLY uses the Litening pod for their aircraft. Talked to some pilots from VMFA 232 who had nothing but great things to say about the Litening pod. Sn8ke Posted August 25, 2018 Author Posted August 25, 2018 (edited) More advanced or not, the Navy is using the ATFLIR on its latest and greatest F/A-18E/F’s. Freeroamer Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 I'm talking about the capabilities of the ATFLIR vs LITNING
ebabil Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Are those really very different ? Can't we use this until we get atflir? RShackleford Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Honestly, the resolution on the current litening II pod the A-10Cs have in game is better than sniper XR IRL (sniper being better than litening II IRL) so if anything, it will be better than real life conditions. Could be more realistically modeled since this is a newer jet ED is putting out though, with images looking more blurred on your screens

Talked to some pilots from VMFA 232 who had nothing but great things to say about the Litening pod. They (USMC) use it only when operating from ground bases. Carrier ops planes (USMC or NAVY) use ATFLIR.
QuiGon Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 They (USMC) use it only when operating from ground bases. Carrier ops planes (USMC or NAVY) use ATFLIR. Interesting, why is that? lbellouny Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 More of an educated guess than anything based on inside information as I do not know any Marine or naval aviators, but likely weight concerns. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Retired CO of the vCSG-3's VF-103 Jolly Rogers
Majinbot Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 The ATFLIR should have 3 FOV reticles compare to the 2 reticles of A-10c Litening. Maybe it has little more range even if it's smaller than the litening? You really think there is such a big weight difference between the two? I would have thought there might be some issues with the Lightening withstanding the violent forces from carrier launches and landings. flavnet Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Hello everyone! While waiting for an ATFLIR for the USNAVY Hornets, it would be fantastic to adapt the A-10C LITENING to the Marines Hornets. I hope the development team will give us a little thought.

bear.is.flying Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Its all about commonality. USMC used Lightning II on their Harriers and they want to use it for their Hornets to simplify supply chain. The USN uses ATFLIR and they want the USMC to use it as well so they don’t need to stock two types of pods on their carriers. QuiGon Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 It's more likely due to the fact that when a USMC squadron deploys with a CVW, the CVW becomes responsible for their log chain. The USN uses ATFLIR and they want the USMC to use it as well so they don’t need to stock two types of pods on their carriers. That makes sense, thanks guys. I believe this has been asked and answered already. In the real world, swapping out an ATFLIR pod for a Litening may be much more simple than in DCS. I’m guessing it would require tons of coding, etc. Asus Prime Gaming Wifi7 // Intel 14900K @5.5GHz // 64Gb DDR5 6000MHz // 3090 RTX // 4TB Samsung NVME M.2
