I too love the 47, already managed to trash a few  got a few good kills in it, feels like the 50s are more powerful then the mustangs but maybe ive just got rose coloured glasses on :D

gotta love that it take a punch tho, got shredded by AAA, limped it back with half the cowling and flaps missing while having to hold the starter on cause otherwise the engine would cut out, battery dead, gen on, mixture full rich, mags on.

cant wait to shred some A8s with quad cannons :D

I think the Soviet navy used A-20s as torpedo bombers too if I'm not mistaken.

The 60lb warheads were used against soft ground targets. For anti-shipping coastal command preferred the 25lb solid warheads - basically big fast darts that hole a ship from side to side. It was found that their trajectory underwater was better than the 60lbs so it was better for hitting below the waterline. The solid head rockets also did a surprising amount of damage to the internal of the ship. From my understanding it was from the rocket motor that broke off after the penetration and “bounced” inside the hull smashing stuff and maybe also starting fires, while the warhead continued on its trajectory to hole the other side of the ship.

Very interesting, didn't know that so thank you. I do hope we get a good selection of 3 inch rockets to play with :joystick:

No. Torpedo Mosquitoes were post-war models. There were (post war) carrier capable mosquito models that carried them. I don’t remember if late models land mosquitoes could too.

The solid shot from the 57mm "tsetse" was also 25lb with a similar description of it's use and effects, the Mosquito pilot in one of the videos near the start of this thread was saying that they aimed short of the target ship/submarine to get a ricochet to go through the hull parallel to the water as that caused the most damage to the target.

Ah it was this video describing it:

Could the mosquito dogfight?

The night fighter claimed as many FW190's as the israelis shot Syrian fighters in the largest air combat since ww2. (mid 60's).

Numbers are just boggling in WW2, we pray nothing close ever happens again. So it's hard to work out numbers. As to if it could dogfight, does it count if you can sneak up and shoot and run away? I can't imagine it had fantastic roll rates but it could move and go fast and was light, so really, it's a tool with lots of amazing choices and real advantages. I don't think you would rate it on the same criteria that you would a modern day fighter though.

Could the mosquito dogfight?

The short answer is yes.

The long answer is yes, but don’t expect it to be a Spitfire. It could definitely hold its own in a fair fight against contemporary 190 and 109 (which means Antons and Gustavs respectively). Mosquito VIs in day operations tended to avoid combat with 109/190 because they were on another mission, so such engagements were relatively rare. They would attack 109/190 on day ranger operations if they had the advantage and disengage once the advantage was lost. 110s on the other hand were considered food.

There are a few famous engagements of mosquitoes with LW fighters. One is Paul Elwell vs. 5 190s:

https://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/fearless-feat-wwii-mosquito-pilot-5-german-focke-wulf-fw-190-aircraft.html

The other is Bob Braham, 29 victories ace that had a low level dogfight with a 109 and a 190, shooting down the 190. The fight was so low that Braham banged his Mossie on the ground and he had to ditch it on the way back. Braham was pretty much suicidal this stage - his usual navigator would not fly with him anymore and shortly after D-Day he tangled again with 2 190s at low level, but this time was hit, ditched the plane and was captured.

Many on many mosquito dog fights were very rare due to the nature of mosquito operations. These happened almost exclusively at Coastal Command operations in the bay of Biscay and Norway. Costal command mosquitoes shot down about as many 190/109 as mosquitoes lost. This is quite an achievement considering that they were usually engaged at a disadvantage while egressing from a naval attack, ammunition expanded, and escorting damaged planes. Also keep in mind that dogfighting was not the focus of these pilots training, except for a few that transitioned from fighters.

One of the more famous incidents of a large scale dogfight is the 26 december raid on Leirvik Norway. You can find some details at this link, scroll down to 26 december 1944:

P.s.,

There was quite a lot happening on that raid. There is a good account of it in “A separate little war” excellent book about the Banff attack wing.

With the lack of news recently about the Mosquito, I thought I'd throw a bit of speculation/wishful thinking out here....

Now we have the P-47 released into EA (loving it BTW) and the fantastic Channel Map too, I wonder if next up on ED's EA release schedule will be our loooong and eagerly awaited Mosquito FB Mk VI? If we do get a release this year, and the new damage model for the WW2 aircraft to boot, this would be a great year for DCS WW2. A great distraction from what is sadly happening in the real world.

What do you guy's think?

Im really exited for the mosquito, gonna be interesting having a twin piston aircraft in dcs, hopefully the handling characteristics are on point, will be interesting to see how the wooden aircraft stands up to damage.

also i know its wishful thinking but tsetsi mustang when

Nick Grey mentioned end of Autumn in the comments of a livestream around the channel release. But EDs release dates are usually a little optimistic, and thats for the ones officially annonced and for specific days. Not to mention the focus on bugfixing right now so I would say probably early next year is more realistic.........

For the night-fighter variants try to find 'Night Flyer' by Lewis Brandon.

For the Bomber Command Light Striking Force B.XVI ops 'Mosquito Victory' by Jack Currie.

For a mixed collection of stories from across the Mosquito's history, try 'The Men Who Flew the Mosquito' by Martin W. Bowman.

Thanks, I will give the last one a go.

There just didn't seem to be many for Mossie books, fighter jocks taking all the limelight I assume.

I brought "Mosquito Pathfinder: Navigating 90 WWII Operations" by Albert Smith a while back, but as implied it is from the navigators perspective. Might give me some inspiration to be a navigator once we get our mits on this beauty.

I wonder what ED are planning regarding the navigator role in terms of AI
