PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Recommended Posts

Looks great Miles!

Will we also be able to flash the device with this user interface?

Again, another great idea from the community! I wasn't even thinking about that Sirrah, thanks, and added.

This was supposed to be simple, but it looks like its getting complicated. The center blue square section is for confirming data only. I will probably hide that and make it a pop up.

Thanks again Sirrah,

Miles

Hello Miles,

I was wondering about to which headsets you have designed mounts for? At the moment I am between headsets and I have been holding off my order until I know for certain which will be my next headset. I think it would be a good idea to update the first post with available mounts. Are the mounts individual or are some mounts usable with more than one type of headset?

If I remember correctly you had some tracking problems with the low emission angle of the IR LEDs. If you haven't solved that one yet I have one suggestion to try out. When I built my own freetrack device I had the same problem with the visible angle being very low and that made the device unusable. I was able to solve it by filing the tip of the led flat instead of the normal rounded tip. That increased the IR emission angle quite a bit (maybe to around 45 degrees or so don't remember how much exactly). Also I think that as the tip was now matte instead of clear helped to scatter the light around. Though, I have no idea does it harm the led to file the excess plastic off and it might be a bit too much work to individually hack all the leds.

Hi Sydost,

Great post and information. We currently use a "straw hat" wide angle IRLED with a 120 degree angle of half intensity. With our Sensor, an increased area of the tracked light source provides better tracking through linear interpolation of the center coordinate.

FoxDeltas mod increases the area of the tracked IR source. I have had mixed results with add on diffusers for increased resolution, but I am still working on a final retrofit solution.

I am also moving from a 5mm to a 8mm IRLED with a translucent lens surface finish ( the same effect you achieved when you filed the led to reduce the angle of incidence across the LED ) the frosted surface illuminates the entire LED lens and diffuses light, while providing consistent tracked surface.

Thank you for your suggestions, and I will update the first post as you suggested. The web site is half done, but you can also see the different mounts available there.

Thanks again, I truly appreciate your suggestions and feedback.

Miles

Update The chip manufacturer finally fixed the mislabeling issue. Production will be starting again tomorrow.

Here is a video preview of the new PointCTRL GUI. The sound is low so you may have to turn it up.

Today I used Pointctrl in the Huey for the first time. I thought it'd be cool to be able to flip switches on the overhead panel with Pointctrl

Unfortunately I stumbled up on some issue I can't seem to figure it out.

For some reason, as soon as I look up and reach my hand towards the overhead panel, my cursor pops into this fixed position (see screenshot)

When I look back down all works like it should again.

I'm kinda out of ideas what's causing this.

  • I tried re-calibration (all feels quite natural and cursors respond as they should)
  • Did another edge calibration (also all seems good there)
  • Disconnected my mouse (made no change)

Anyone here have any ideas, or maybe recognizes this issue?

(sorry for the poor screenshot quality. I only fly in VR and use a very crappy old monitor :D)

Hey Sirrah,

That sounds like IR interference. My guess is a window or light is in the direction of the overhead panel right where the cursor is stuck. If its a window, you may have to occlude it, if its a light, you may have to switch to a bulb that does not emit IR, like an LED and some of the CFL or fluorescent bulbs.

Unlike TrackIR, where you only have to account for the IR interference in the static cameras FOV, PointCTRLs sensor is moved in your 360 degree environment.

Here is another cheesy long winded video that may be helpful in tracking down the problem.

Of course! I've seen all your tutorial video's, yet I didn't think of this...

Not at my pc right now to test it, but this must be it! :pilotfly:

I had this problem and as now with you, Miles pointed me in the right area to look at. Once I covered the light spots with blinds I was OK.

Hope your problem is the same.

FireCat/Miles,

I happen to have two stations at my house, and was wondering if it would be possible to get added at the end of the list for another sensor and set of FCUs? I don't want to take away from someone who hasn't gotten theirs yet.

Still didn't get the chance to try, but there's a window to my upper left... so this must be it :)

I've added you at the end of the list, I can't see anyone objecting.
