PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Recommended Posts

Has anyone with a Reverb tried unplugging the monitor and running totally from vr headset?

Now that's an interesting and thoughtful idea that seems to get to the root of the issue. You would have to start windows with only the HMD active, Can that even be done? Can you see a desktop? Could this help your frame rate? I Have no idea about any of this and never tried it, and I don't have a reverb, But I am intrigued.

I do expect to get this resolved correctly, but this is interesting.

Thanks Terrydew, Maybe we can get Thud to weigh in on this.

Monitor native res: 2560x1440

If your up for testing, you can try putting your monitor in portrait mode. I don't know if it was here or on discord I talked about this, but when I put my monitor in portrait and unchecked cursor confinement I got the missing 2% that is missing with the S. None of this is a real solution, just fulfilling curiosity and building the knowledge base.

It should be working without a Monitor, with no Windows Passwort Set and VR-Desktop on Autostart.

But i haven't try it yet.

Holy moly. That actually works. But it's really hard to navigate Windows 90 degress off...:)

Yea, to navigate I turned my mouse 90 degrees to the left and left clicked with my thumb. Did you get full horizontal cursor movement range, I would expect it to be reduced. You will also have to re-calibrate PointCTRL because of the reciprocal aspect ratio.

I am still curious about TerryDews suggestion.

Thanks for testing that out.

May I offer a suggestion for those with the Reverb?

If the issue is that the Reverb has higher resolution than you physical monitor, try setting a custom resolution for the monitor that is higher than the Reverb's. I use this trick to capture higher-resolution VR in game footage for streaming in 1080p.

I think I will try that right now, I don't have a Reverb, but I still may get good data with the S.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Update: I just cleaned up the GUI a bit, FCU menu changes are quicker, and the seizure inducing flashing menu cursors have been changed to smooth identifiable movements that still mimic their functions (kind of). You need to update the firmware also.

Thanks,

Miles

Yep. The cursor even moved beyond my vertical FOV in the headset.

Sorry, didn't read correctly. Will test horizontal movement tonite.

Hey Desh,

I liked your thinking. It looked like it was going to work, It did make the DCS window much more representative of what you see in the cockpit. It was nice and wide, with the top and bottom clipped, but not distorted.

Unfortunately, it did not effect the cursor movement being vertically scaled down and limited when it's in the DCS window.

I think it may be DCS VR implementation since it is not specific to any VR Headset.

Still working it, Next up is TerryDews suggestion.

Thanks for the good, sound suggestion.

Good to see progress in the software. When does production resume again? You know, sitting on the fence watching your discussion is not the same ;)

I wasn't able to properly calibrate in Portrait Mode as the 5 point calibration put the crosses outside of my horizontal FOV. Also the Monitor view calibration is funky cannot get to the outer edges of the game window - neither horizontal nor vertical. Going Portrait is probably not a viable solution at this point.

@new Firmware: the indication cursor movement is much better

Hey Kirin,

Thanks for trying, I really appreciate your time. Los has a Reveb coming Monday, so I plan on spending the afternoon there getting some good data.

@FlankerRider, I am just getting away from the reflow oven and 3d printer fumes for a bit.

Hey Miles-

I was trying to set up my PointCtrl with the new GUI, and if I reset the HMS, Com 10 is the port that disappears in the device manager. However, there is no choice for any com port over 9 in the drop-down box.

I know it is the holidays, I don't expect a response or fix quickly, just letting you know what I was having trouble with.

Thanks for all of your hard work!

Hey Phoenix,

Once you determine which com port PointCTRL is on( see reference Pic 1 ), you can change PointCTRLs com port( see reference pic 2). If there are no free ports below (com10) you can delete old unused comports assignments. (see reference pic (3).

Hope that helps, and thanks for bringing this up. I will have to add it to the GUI.

I've been away from DCS for a few years doing other stuff and am just getting back into things; I recently "upgraded/side-graded" from original Rift to the S, and I've 99.7% convinced myself to trade up from my Warthog to a VirPil T-50 CM2 rig. Then I come across *this* awesome piece of kit which actually seems more useful and game-changing to me than the rest of those upgrades. Wish I would have been paying attention a year ago; this would have gotten me back here much sooner!

I've PM'ed FireCat but wanted to also post here; please add me to the list as well!!!

Thanks!
