I am currently putting a mission together and I'm having an issue with getting my SEAD flight to engage enemy air defenses anywhere near Rmax for the HARM or ALARM. If they shoot at all, they seem to wander to just under half of their max range and shoot. Oftentimes, this is within the SAM engagement envelope and they get shot down or go defensive before they shoot back.

Of course, the entire mission package is barrelling along blindly behind SEAD shooters that they're expecting to do their assigned task.

I've tried different airframes. I've tried getting them higher to coax a longer shot from them. Nothing has worked. I am using the "search then engage in zone" option.....not SEAD in ME.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. My next step is to set triggers to artificially blow up the assets that the SEAD flight should be engaging.

Anybody have any consistent luck getting SEAD flight to do their job?

Depends on air frame used:

A few mission I fixed with the Fa-18 doing SEAD, did a very poor job of it, I had the same issues you described, I have always had better results with the F-16 and Su-25T being probably the best (Probably depends on long range sensors available on aircraft).

Main issue I have is that missiles get borked all the time and cause tracking issues or faulty flight dynamics and or the target turn off their radar, more often missing their targets.

Depending on target:

  • Two or more aircraft firing at same time is required to overwelm the targets defenses.
  • Altitude can make a large difference.
  • Type of missile used against a specific target, slow cruise missile will work with some SAMS but not others, the HARM will work better in most instances, some times even firing maverick is better than a HARM, but you do have to get a lot closer for them to fire, so that is why you want multiple aircraft working on the one SAM at same time, and have good countermeasures and manueverability.

Thanks for the response Mad dog.

They ARE indeed AI hornets. They're TERRIBLE. HARMS have a 70+nm range and they're blindly stumbling in to within 30 miles of an emitting SA10 and won't fire. I've tried up into the mid 20s in alt and all it seems to do is enter the SAMs engagement envelopesooner. LOL

I'll try some Vipers. I have 4 2-ships loaded to engage two SA10 sites geographically separated by about 25nm. Very frustrating. I tried a group of tornados and that was even worse. They wobbled around at an extreme AoA and then turned around and RTB, or flew into terrain even though they were set to fly in the mid 20s. REAL dumb.

Home Tuesday. I'll check then.

I have the same issues, AI does a terrible job overall on dcs. For now AV8 I send them after softer targets like AAA and short range sams with mavericks. Tornados work well against hawks. I skip the F18 altogether. Against SA10 I havent found a solution, they either wont engage it or will die by going head on. Perhaps switching to bombing run and sending a F117? On another note against ai behavior, wingman AI will crash 100% of the time while I land on some airfields. AI wingmen do the approach like a Blue Angels, inches from me, but when I land they fly like a drunk blind man into a mountain. They are too stupid and only work with scripted actions.

Make a trigger action to destroy the AD units. A Player in his/her cockpit can not discern whether the SAM was destroyed by AI or by trigger, anyway. The human pilot only knows that the SAM is no longer detected. Mission designer can include randomness, radio traffic and messages to enhance the experience.

Sure it would be great to have AI with competent and reliable SEAD behavior, but until we get that work-arounds will have to suffice.

That's going to be my final act of desperation Habu.....if I can't get vipers to do it consistently, it's trigger time. I've been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole for two weeks now.

I recall meeting the same frustrating situation awhile ago and found no solution. In my case SEAD flight would abort and RTB encountering first AD threat, but than was back in 1.2.X, I think. Resorted to work-around.

Whelp I tried with F16s as well. I've had decent luck in the past but a giant goose egg this time. Taking advice and setting triggers to blow up assets that shouldn't need to be. Frustrated, but ready to move on. I've spent entirely too much time trying to get assets to do what they were supposed to do. Thanks to all for the suggestions and insight.
