wernst Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 Are there any restrictions, limitations or (visual) drawbacks when playing DCS 2.5. on an ultrawide 3840 x 1080 monitor? Which? My actual system has a GTX 980 with a CPU which delivers in average 50 - 60 fps on a 1920 x 1080 monitor. (single player, free flight missions, settings to HIGH) Which performance (fps - wise) can be expected when switching to a 3840 x 1080 monitor? The number of pixels for the GPU and CPU to process is then double. A rough estimate tells me that the fps performance would be half and the CPU load would be double? Could that be? It’s probably not as simple calc as this, that’s why I’m asking for your experience here. Thanks
Knock-Knock Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 Isnt gonna be half, but you can try and run with x1.5 SSAA from the options-system menu. This will give you a bit more pixels, than 3840x1080. Or in other words, it will render (calculate) a little more pixels, and then downscale it to 1920x1080 for the display. 1920x1080 at 1.5 SSAA = 4665600 3840x1080 = 4147200 I guess that should give you a pretty good indication of what performance to expect. - Jack of many DCS modules, master of none. - Personal wishlist: F-15A, F-4S Phantom II, JAS 39A Gripen, SAAB 35 Draken, F-104 Starfighter, Panavia Tornado IDS. | Windows 11 | i5-12400 | 64Gb DDR4 | RTX 3080 | 2x M.2 | 27" 1440p | Rift CV1 | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS | MFG Crosswind pedals |

Thanks, as proposed I tried different SSAA settings and got the following fps (under identical mission conditions): SSAA off: 45 - 55 fps SSAA 1,5x: 25 - 40 fps SSAA 2,0x: 18 - 25 fps In all settings the CPU load was not higher than 30% and the CPU temp. did not increase over 60 deg. C. What I learned from this test, pls correct me if I'm wrong. When replacing my 1920x1080 monitor for an ultrawide 3840 x 1080 version 1. I should expect a significant but just acceptable drop in fps. (with the GTX 980) 2. Surprisingly the increase in CPU load and CPU temp is barely noticeable. 3. As consequence: The GPU power is mostly relevant for the 3840 x 1080 monitor performance
toutenglisse Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 using SSAA to test equivalent numbers of pixel is good to estimate gpu usage, but with ultrawide screen you change the field of view angle, and that will have a big impact versus 16:9 field of view (but I can't imagine what gpu and cpu usage will be) because rendering more objects for the same scene/spot.
