captflyby Posted October 20, 2018 Posted October 20, 2018 They began development on this one in 2012 - so it is a new system, not 4 decades old. But, cancelled it with cost overruns of the F-35s. You don't have to fly up the bad guys tail pipe before you can deploy it and hit something. It has a 60% longer range than the AIM-9X which was needed as the DRFM and AESA jammers can often defeat the onboard radar of the AIM-120. A more stable intensive munitions warhead, making it safer on the deck. It is capable of WVR and BVR Its planned platform is the F-35 but can be easily mounted to the FA-18C giving this bird more A2A options. One of the major reasons for its development is the concern of targeting 5th generation fighters with their ability to easily defeat some existing AMRAMM radar technology.
