32GB 3200MHz memory kits for Ryzen

Recommended Posts

Considering 3000MHz or 3200MHz memory kits for my next R2700X + Asus Hero VIII X470 build. Any recommendations? 2x16 or 4x8?

Regards, Django.

2x16 for sure, 4x8 will not clock as high and since Ryzen (not threadripper) is only dual channel, there’s no advantage to 4x8.

I have tridentz 3200 cl16, and I can’t even get higher than 2933 on first gen Ryzen. Second gen (2000 series) should do better.

GSkill FlareX are designed for Ryzen and should work well, but are expensive.

Samsung B die (google can tell you which brands and models have this) are supposed to be best for first gen Ryzen, not sure about second gen.

Any ideas why 32GB QVL kit support is so poor on the Hero VIII?

Because most kits likely didnt work as intended.

Make sure they are in QVL or that you can return them to the seller if they dont work properly.

I'm having a hard time paying more for RAM than my CPU! For around £300 my choices seem to be:

3000MHz CAS15

3200MHz CAS16

Q) At this price range should I be interested in whether the RAM chips are Samsung B-Die?

QVL !! Most High End are Samsung B-die. but even those are HEAVILY binned, thus the speed range and CL values

Buying cheap memory is a no go for a high end Ryzen build.

Get the CL12 3200 kits, or CL14, or 15 for 3600Mhz ones. They will be most certainly SAMSUNG B die.

Not only do they give you the best performance but youll also avoid lots of headaches as well.

Yup. I wish I’d known this a year ago, my RAM was cheap but doesn’t clock well at all.

It is a sad truth, that sometimes you get what you pay for. For a high end build, spend the money. What you save in hassles and headaches will be worth it in the long run.

When I bought my RAM it was sub 300€, now it's 499,95€ :(

I thought about a better behaving kit but the price is just too high...and what would I do with the current kit then ?

They ran flawless with the board ( Z270 ) I bought them with but with my Z370 board it's 3200 CL16 and no single Hertz faster or tighter or I crash.

I, we, can only repeat that you should consider the QVL listing and if you stray aside the QVL, make very sure you can give them back if they dont run properly.

RAM has become a real PITA and it's not only AMD Ryzen being tricky, Intel is no inch better when it comes to compatibility.

I have spend really countless hours and nights, very frustrating, trying to get my RAM to 3600 XMP as it should be but I have no luck. Avoid my pain running a 3600 kit at 3200, it eats me up inside GRRRHH.

my best advice

I, we, can only repeat that you should consider the QVL listing

I get the impression that Asus simply can't be bothered to update the Hero VII memory QVL. Some memory manufacturers seem to have done their own testing e.g.:

Crucial Ballistic Elite 32GB 4x8 3200MHz CAS15

G.Skill Trident Z RGB F4-3200C16Q-32GTZRX 32GB 4x8 3200MHz CAS16

G.Skill Trident Z RGB F4-3200C16D-32GTZRX 32GB 2x16 3200MHz CAS16

... and that's about it folks!

Q) Maybe I should consider the Asus ROG Strix X470-F for better memory compatibility?

I am also looking for a new board, maybe go AMD 2700x along with a board.

The god damn only thing that holds me back is those 500€ for RAM that I am not willing to spend and risc as I know for certain that my current kit wont run or even boot with a new board with 4 modules.

I have studied the QVL's from Asus, MSI, Gigabyte and Asrock where available for the boards I could go with. It's sad across the whole bench. They list very very few kits at higher speeds and Asus imho still has the most kits listed from them all above 2933MHz. Some have BARE NONE at 3200 and up. What a freaking joke !

What I wanna say, I cant tell you what will work. You either pick a board by it's QVL that you know has the RAM you like and can obtain ( what a stupid way to pick parts, but we are almost forced to think this way ) or you gamble and pick a board you like with RAM that may be not in the QVL. Just make sure you find some threads and posts online with people who run your combo successfully or completly hope on luck and a good nose to pick parts.

When it comes to memory, Asrock is also not bad. I am not to sure if I would pick an Asus on my next board. I had Asus only for 20 years with very few exceptions that I all did regret but Asus has given me enough headache meanwhile to try another one again. The main reason is trouble with RAM and quality. I had a few RMA's and each one was is and will be a PITA, best if it just works as advertised.

If I had to buy RAM for a Ryzen, I'd prolly get some Flare-X_MADE FOR AMD 3200 or 3600.

This would be worth 100€ to me, no kidding. If they run troublefree, it's worth the extra cash vs. headache and pulled hair :)

Older DDR4 kits, those made for Z170 ( like mine ) do not run well on AMD and newer Z270/370 and likely Z390 Intel. Not all samsung B-dies are equal, by far not. Also the layout of the module, it's PCB, plays a big role in what chipsets it likes to run - or not. I learned all this by trying to get my 3600 kit to run on this Z370. The more I read the more I know it's almost impossible and with AMD...I better not even try LoL....2015/2016 PCB layout, DDR4, B-die, all the same, just the layout and binning.

FlareX made for AMD, get those and safe yourself a lot of pain ( they have real nice tight timings btw )

Hey.. looking for opinions.

I'm not a ram expert.. but this is what I ordered.

G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) AMD X370 / X399 Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14D-16GTZRX Timing 14-14-14-34

CAS Latency 14.

Will that work in my 2700x with crosshair VII? (X470 MB)

I think the Trident Z product line follows on from FlareX (???), they seem cheaper anyway for a similar spec.

Mine has the extra X on it.

Might have something to do with the RAM chips on the modules:

Gskill has 2 module series made for AMD with FlareX and TridentZ_AMD.

The FlareX go from 2133 till 3200, any faster is TridentZ_AMD.

Since it is crucial for the CCX to run as fast as possible a fast RAM kit is much more important on AMD than on Intel rigs. I would certainly get 3200 as minimum, with a tight latency, as tight as you can afford as long as it says "Made for AMD". A 3600 kit might not sell for much more, so check the CL and price. 3200 CL12 is better than 3600 CL18, about like that. There are spreadsheets around that show the actual latency of said modules.

I would not pay 200€ extra for 3600 CL18 etc... CL16 or 15..maybe.

A) Single rank is more likely to clock higher

A) 4x8Gb only supports 2133mhz on Ryzen officially

I am running 4x8Gb 3000 on a R7-1700. With a lot of tweaking I can get it running 2666 on X470. For me it is not worth the cost to buy different RAM for a small chance of running higher frequencies. I am waiting for Zen2 vs upgrading to Zen+ for slight gains.

It is no easy task getting 3200 (or more) on Ryzen. People have done it 2x8Gb, but info for successful 4 stick systems is hard to find using Google-Fu.

Had my former 1700x run 4x8 @3200 and upgraded to 2700x that runs same kits @ 3533. Official spec is not indicative of the speed you might actually get, that depends on the kits being listed for your board, cpu silicon lottery and the quality of the BIOS. Doesn't matter if the board is X370 or 470 (providing its from the same brand) , the biggest factors were already mentioned above.

I have personally won the "silicon lottery" once in my lifetime. I had an old Slot 1 Celeron 300 that would overclock like a beast back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.:megalol:

I love Ryzen, but I would caution anyone who wants higher memory timings than what is printed in the manual to select their parts very carefully and to be prepared for frustration and disappointment.

That chip was very unique. It could overclock like crazy and work for years. Mine ran at 450Mhz for three years before it started to fail.

Life is a lot different now. Tolerances are tighter and performance outside of certain ranges is far less likely.
