The CAG is a single person.

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

So the CAG is a kind of leader of a squadron ?

Not of a squadron, but of the entire carrier air wing. ;)

Wait, I'm confused now. Each squadron has a CAG jet, but a CVW contains more than one squadron. How can there be multiple CAGs?

Great question! I've actually wondered the same.

  • 2 weeks later...

CAG a traditional term for what used to be a Commander Air Group, but is now a Commander of a Carrier Air Wing (CVW). So the CAG is the Wing Commander.

CAG and CVW can be used interchangeably, at least conversationally. For example, I was once attached to the CVW-8 staff, but I could say I was embarked with CAG-8 or I was on CAG staff.

The USN is big on tradition, and often keeps otherwise obsolete terms for sake of tradition.

EDIT: As for the CAG birds, each squadron does one for the CAG, and it normally represents both the CAG and Deputy CAG (DCAG). These are traditionally high-color paint jobs, but despite the name they are still flown operationally by the squadron and not reserved for the CAG/DCAG. Aviators don't always fly the planes with their name. In fact, more often than not they don't fly "their" plane. It's all about which aircraft are available for the flight schedule.
