Last mission mini-campaign

I have a question. In the last mission of the mini-campaign I have to bomb some helicopters parked at an airfield. I have one wingman with no escort. Every time I fly the mission I am confronted by 4 Mig-29A's. I order my wingman to attack bandits but every time they are with too many and I am shot down. Is there a certain tactic to use in this mission or do I have to learn to deal with 3 adversaries without TWS?

the last mission is artificially difficult, but there's a few things you can try:

1. rearm on the catapult, swap 2 of the mk84's for twin 82s or 83s. use the 2 remaining stations for more missiles

2. hang back and order your wingman to engage, then drag the migs through the 2 hornets doing SEAD or back to the tomcats

3. sprint at the airfield and bomb with ccrp. make sure to arm mk83's or cbu20's as they're the only bombs that work properly in ccrp right now

Thanks for the advices! Will try them out. I did the mission yesterday and flew directly to the airfield and bombed the choppers with snake-eyes. Then I was shot by sam (cause I flew there before the Normandy and other seads had enough time to destroy the sams). So I made the mission and ended the campaign but didn't survive ;) So I found that not satisfying so I started the campaign all over again. So when I am in the last mission again I will try your advices ;)

Just would chime in that strategy #3 from naizarak above worked for me, using the default loadout (looks like CCRP/auto works for Mk84s now). As a precaution, I fired off my sparrows on the run in to the target to deflect the Migs a bit. I think it was my wingman who hit the target (I didn't check the track after but it seems right given the timing of the "mission accomplished" message).

After dropping the bombs, I did full power back toward the carrier, but saw my wingman being closely tailed by a bandit on the SA. Turned around and shot an AIM-9 at them successfully. We were tailed by another bandit but by this point it seemed to make more sense to drag them toward the F-14s ahead, who finished them off.

If you decide to make a real go at the bandits, it seems like things are stacked against you pretty heavily. Your wingman refuses to attack them, the SEAD hornets won't go after them, and so you're kind of on your own aside from them having these other targets, and there are four of them. Plus you have only 2 sparrows and 2 sidewinders, so ... are you going to have to get a hit on every missile? If you wanted to drop your bombs after clearing the bandits, you'll be dragging four Mk84s through the whole fight too. When I look at it this way, it seems you really do have to get in and get out as fast as possible.

Also had some difficulties with this mission, actually the bulk of my "deaths" in the logbook came from this mission by being impatient and not formulating a good strategy (and fall back plans if primary didn't work out).

As others have stated, there are a few strategies that help with keeping you alive and able to RTB, but can still be difficult depending on which you choose and other factors (skill, knowledge of engagement ranges, etc.)

I personally don't like to re-arm on the deck as if you make a large enough change it can give the "check trim" warning and have some impact on how the jet performs.. Found it much easier to change the load out in the mission briefing before entering the cockpit.

I go with 2 Mk 84's, 4 120c's, 2 9x's and center bag. This obviously loads the jet down quite a lot, but dumping the bag as soon as she is empty gets some of the response back from the jet when requesting pitch/roll.

1. I personally chose to engage the enemy aircraft before starting the bombing run on the helo's parked on the ramp. Just made it less likely to be engaged by the MiG's on ingress or egress.

2. The second tactic I tried, and was the second favorite (personally) behind the previously mentioned tactic - was to do stay on the deck until a few nm's from the target, then pop up and drop the payload on the helo's.

For this tactic, I still chose a center bag, but then replaced the 2 Mk84's and 2 of the 120c's with 4 Mk83's. Makes the aircraft much more nimble and staying low keeps the MiG's from focusing on you as you ingress (more stealthy attack). They are still likely to track and try to engage you after you pop up but from my experience it happens long enough after you've dropped the bombs that you can either turn and burn (get low again) to egress and have your friendly aircraft help defend you. Or, allow you to get setup for a good engagement opportunity against the MiG's before starting your egress. Also, using the mountains after dropping the bombs is a useful tool as it helps mask you from their radar, but obviously puts you in a position for a collision with the terrain if things don't go as planned.

Cheers,

Don

Well, I just had the opportunity to fly again and tried the OCA mission (last of the mini campaign). Not sure what has changed, but I experienced a similar issue. None of my strategies work anymore. Was able to get 2 bandits splashed, but also was shot down before I could complete the mission.

Seems like something has been altered, or some variable has changed. Not for the better in my case at least.

Nearly impossible.

SEAD strike and TLAM strike both have good effect, my wing man is useless (pretty much standard for AI) but the bandits are just lethal. Seems like their skill level is at "excellent", even though in the mission editor is states "random."

Aside from altering the mission in the mission editor, which I don't want to do as it seems like cheating - I am not sure how to successfully complete this mission anymore.

Literally tried it 10 times in a row and all 10 times was never even close to making it back to the Stennis.

A frustrating way to spend my one day out of the last 7 available to fly, certainly left a bitter feeling towards it. Won't waste anymore time on it and will probably jump back to the Maple Flag BFM campaign for any future flights this coming week (if I get any time to do so).

Blah,

To clear that (not sure if its the correct procedure but it works for me) FCS reset, then press the TO trim button again, it re-trims the aircraft to the new loadout.

Yah, I tried this a bunch of times too. I've been able to complete it with a few different sratigies, but only one has proved to be repeatedly workable:

Come in low and fast right behind the Tomahawks, pop up just enough to line up with the helos and get above frag height, make a single pass on the target dropping all your bombs, then turn hard and flee back to the Stennis has fast as your remaining fuel allows. Ignore the MiGs, they'll chase you hard, but if you stay fast enough shouldn't be able to get a good shot on you. Eventually you'll get under cover of the fleet CAP or escort ships and they'll splash the MiGs. Ignore the temptation to turn and fight the MiGs, you're outnumbered, and in the time it takes to make the 180 turn to engage you'll end up in a really bad spot. If you really want to not flee the whole way back, wait until friendlies are engaging the MiGs then turn around and catch any distracted stragglers, but it's still risky and you'll be low on fuel.

I climbed high to conserve fuel and went full burners. I made a dive attack on the helos and then used my remaining fuel to climb back up and out of there, until I was in range of the CAP. I couldn't finish the mission otherwise.

I'll try this tactic when I get back to home base, always up for adding some new tools to the box.

Been having some trouble with this mission too. I am mostly having issues with my AI wingman. If I order him to engage bandits he just says "Unable" every time. He has never engaged a bandit in this mission. That left me to order him to engage the target and rejoin, but every time he does that he gets shot down, I think by a SAM. I have actually completed this mission a few times, but never been able to return to the ship with my wingman, so I keep trying to get that perfect result. Good to read the tips in here, I'm going to try some of them out.

Tried a few more times today. Managed to shoot down 2 or 3 of the bandits each time, but then got shot down. My wingman may as well stay on the boat for this mission, he is beyond useless!

This is the "Task Force Challenger" campaign that is currently included with the Hornet. The 5 missions in the campaign are also in the single missions folder individually.
