The MiG-29 of Iran

I'm in the process of editing a set of flight practice missions for the Iranian MiG-29A set on the Persian Gulf, so I have been gathering information about the service of this aircraft on Iran ... tought it might be of interest to other would-be mission designers:

The acquisition process begun on October 1989, when the President Rafsanjani visited Moscow with the aim to develop an economic, military and technical agreement between Iran and the USSR, worth almost $10 billion.

Within this agreement, a contract for the purchase of 20 MiG-29 for the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF), was signed on 15 November 1989. This contract covered the provision of 14 MiG-29A (model 9.12A) and 6 MiG-29UB (model 9.51B), to equip a single IRIAF squadron: the 11th TFS.

It also included training for 40 pilots and 200 ground crew; 150 missiles R-27R, 400 missiles R-60MK and 300 R-73E missiles, with their launchers; 40 external centerline fuel tanks; and FAB-series bombs & B-8M rocket Pods.

At about this same time, the Iranian regime was also creating a separate "Guards" Air Force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Air Force (IRGCAF), with its first squadron to be equipped with 16 MiG-21 purchased to East Germany, however only two MiG-21U were delivered, the remaining were embargoed after the German reunification on August 1990.

As a result, a further 11 MiG-29A were purchased by Iran from the USSR for IRGCAF use, with 12 Iranian pilots sent for training on the USSR, tough only three of them passed the flying course in the USSR.

The IRIAF aircrafts were delivered between October and December 1990. One MiG-29A crashed into the Caspian Sea during its ferry flight, killing its pilot; but the USSR provided a replacement aircraft shortly after.

The delivery of the 11 MiG-29A for the IRGCAF started in late 1991, but only four were received, the supply of the other seven stopped due to the dissolution of the USSR. This token force never saw IRGCAF service, the four jets instead entered IRIAF service, along with their pilots and ground crews, serving with the 11th TFS.

After the delivery of the original 20 MiG-29 for the IRIAF, a second order for 48 more units (40 MiG-29A and 8 MiG-29UB) were ordered from RSK MiG in winter 1992, for delivery on 1993-94 but the break-up of the USSR and pressure from the US, resulted on the cancellation of this order.

As a result of Operation “Desert Storm”, 144 Iraqi aircraft fled to Iran between 23 and 28 January 1991. Among them, there were 4 MiG-29 from Iraq’s 6th Squadron, three MiG-29B and one MiG-29UB. On July 1993 these aircrafts were inducted into the IRIAF, but only the two seater saw service, the remaining three went into storage for safety reasons, until they finally entered service on September 2009, September 2010 and December 2011.

Thanks for posting, Rudel!

For the sake of completeness, could you add which squadrons use the MiG-29 and where are they posted within Iran? I think that would also be helpful for mission builders. Although I recall doing some surface-level search and see that most of them are based around Teheran... so not exactly in the PG area

Main: MiG-21bis, because pocket rockets are fun

Sorry, I don't have that information. 🙂

A bit of shameless self-promotion.... I did a Blue-Green Iranian skin for MiG-29 while a ago... I hope you like it.

All the people keep asking for capabilities to be modelled.... I want the limitations to be modelled.... limitations make for realistic simulation.

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a bit you realize the pig likes it.

Looks nice 👍 but I actually find more attractive the tan-light blue scheme:
