DCS: F-16C Viper - Development Progress

We are improving the external damage model of DCS: F-16C Viper. The new damage model provides better ballistics tracking and more detailed effects to sloped sheet metal. In the interim, you may have noticed a more realistic representation of wing damage.

  • Radar Velocity Search Mode.

Please note that both the 2021 and 2022 lists may not be delivered in the listed order. These are our current plans as of July 2021, and they are subject to change. There are many more items that we will be addressing, but this list is confined to poll items.

Some features require a lot of effort and time, like HTS/HAD and AG radar, while the others are not as complex and can be completed sooner. We’ll start with the most important ranked by you, that are also feasible for us, and then continue to bring you more and more DCS: F-16C Viper functionality.

It is also important to remember that all features of our Viper are in regards to a United States F-16CM Block 50 operated in the 2007 time frame.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

One of the most important updates we are working on for the Viper is adjusting the angle of attack and G loading models. We’ve been making good progress, and the sustained rates match the reference data well across airspeeds, altitudes, drag indexes, etc. The same can also be said for acceleration and Instantaneous Turns Rates (ITR) below approximately 20k MSL. We do though still need to adjust acceleration and ITR above 20k MSL. This is not a simple matter, and we hope to have this task complete this autumn.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll look at the CBU-105, Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser, or WCMD. Like the JDAM and JSOW, the CBU-105 is an Inertially Aided Munition, or IAM, that uses the Sensor Point of Interest, or SPI, as the aim point.

The CBU-105 is a canister weapon that contains ten BLU-108 submunitions, and each BLU-108 contains four skeets that use a sensor to detect and fire an explosively formed penetrator at the top of the target.

This is an ideal weapon against armor targets in a 1,500 x 500 area.

This a very similar weapon to the CBU-97, that also uses 10 BLU-108 submunitions, but as an IAM, it has a better standoff capability, and you can attack multiple targets on a single pass.

With the release of the CBU-105 WCMD today, some of you may be asking yourself, "where the frack is the CBU-103?!" Fear not, it's still coming but we are currently not satisfied with the CEB weapon affect or visual effect. Once we nail these down, we look forward to releasing this weapon and updating the CBU-87 that also uses CEBs.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

In one of next Viper updates, we'll be adding the option to toggle between LAT/LONG and MGRS on the Steerpoint (STPT) page. This done through a DCS (dobber) right press and only for Steerpoints 21 to 25. While this may seem a bit odd, it is correct for a 2007 Block 50. Also, there is about a three second delay when converting from LAT/LONG to MGRS.

Note that to toggle between MAN and AUTO Steerpoint sequencing, the MAN/AUTO field will need to be highlighted and then press M-SEL to toggle.

The DEST page will also have this, when this DED page is added.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

While certainly not a Viper-only item, we've been making good progress on the AIM-120 INS guidance when the missile has no DL and out of HPRF seeker range.

  • Added a new active seeker with physical signal calculations and doppler search/doppler tracking (velocity gate).
  • We simplified the seeker gimbal model that results in a good improvement.
  • Added a new guidance processor with Kalman filtering and optimal guidance law (to account for target accelerations, target inertia, missile control loop inertia, and missile x-axis acceleration.)
  • Added datalink-aided INS.
  • Added aircraft weapon control system emulator for initial missile targeting and datalink support.

These changes will make the AIM-120 a much more lethal weapon for a Cheap Shot (ending support between HPRF and MPRF).

DCS: Viper Mini updates

In an upcoming update, we will be introducing a Payload Restriction option in the Mission Editor. This will allow mission designers to restrict weapons to specific stations for both single- and multi-player missions.

I am posting this here as we hope this will be a good solution for “HARMgate”. Based on further research, it comes down to a “it depends” situation. While some Viper units have had their HARM shooters wired for STA 4 and 6, other did not. This explains the conflicting SME feedback and mass-consternation and confusion. With the addition of the Payload Restriction option, we’ll let you decide.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

Dual Target Track (DTT) radar mode allows you to designate a primary and secondary target that the radar will continue to update when within the gimbal limits of the radar. However, they do not need to be in the selected scan volume.

In this example, we will set our azimuth to 30-degrees and designate two targets by slewing the cursor over each and then pressing TMS Forward on the control stick to designate them. We can toggle priority and secondary between them by pressing TMS Right on the control stick.

If we designate a third target, it will become the new secondary target, the previous will no longer be one of the two DTT targets.

DTT allows you faster updates of these two targets and engage both at the same time with AIM-120s.

If either target range is 10-miles or less, only the two DTT targets will update. Once either is at 3-miles or less, it will become a Single Target Track automatically.

Please note the radar symbols are still very much a work in progress.

Used Key Commands:
TMS Forward = Right Ctrl + Up Arrow
TMS Right = Right Ctrl + Right Arrow
Dogfight Switch MRM Mode = 4

DCS: Viper Mini updates

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll look at converting Lat/Long long coordinate to MGRS coordinates on the Steerpoint page. This is an item from our road map.

First, select the Steerpoint DED page from the ICP. It’s important to understand that you can only convert between Lat/Long and MGRS with Steerpoints 21 to 25. Once you select one of them on the ICP keypad or Steerpoint rocker switch, press the DCS, or Dobber, switch to the right to toggle the coordinate format. When going from Lat/Long to MGRS, there will be a small delay.

Having MGRS coordinates is useful as you may receive tasking coordinates in MGRS format at times.

You may be asking yourself how you will toggle between manual and automatic Steerpoint sequencing because it also uses Dobber right. Now, you need to Dobber to the Manual/Automatic field and then press the M-Select button on the ICP to toggle it.

Note that you can only automatically sequence steerpoints 1 to 20.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll look at the addition of the radar warning receiver indication on the helmet mounted display of the helmet mounted cueing system. The indication can be enabled or disabled from the HMCS DED page.

The display is rather ghetto compared to the Hornet’s system and will only display the RWR gear priority threat. It appears in the top left of the HMD with the threat indication in the center. The notch in the circle indicates your head position relative to the nose of the aircraft. The diamond indicates the relative threat radar location.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

Time for a little Viper update. While the AH-64D team has been very busy, or modern-day fixed wing team (Viper and Hornet), have been equally busy. Although not a promise (a lot can happen in test), we are shooting for the following in the October update:

  • Air-to-Ground radar in Ground Map (GM) mode.
  • HARM Targeting System (HTS) and HARM Attack Display (HAD).
  • Bullseye DED page and indications for FCR and HSD pages.
  • Addition of the HSD cursor.
  • Addition of Mark Points.
  • New INS/datalink system for AIM-120 guidance.
  • Updated FCR and HSD symbols (color and shape).
  • Highly detailed pilot for cockpit view.
  • Smoother cursor control.
  • Improved MPD clarity.
  • Adjusted RWR detection ranges.
  • Flight model adjustments including commanded G-onset rate.
  • RWS/TWS refinements.
  • On-speed AoA airspeed correction.
  • Addition of the HMCS DED page.

This list is by no means complete, but it highlights some of the more pressing matters. Again though, this list is not in stone and may change based on internal test results.

F-16C Viper - Development report

An aircraft’s sustained turn rate is the rate at which the aircraft can turn while sustaining a constant airspeed. This is an important aspect of the “rate fight” in close air combat. We have prepared a white paper document that compares DCS: F-16C Viper to real-world Viper sustained turn rates DCS: F-16C Viper Sustained Turn Rates.

Below 20,000 feet, the acceleration and Instantaneous Turns Rates (ITR) are accurate, however we continue further refinements above 20,000 feet. We also continue to research high G-onset that will improve nose authority, essential for the final phase of close air combat, especially in guns mode.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll look at some of the new features coming to the Helmet Mounted Cueing System, or HMCS.

This will include HMCS display options and the alignment procedure.

It is advised to perform an HMCS alignment after a cold start, but it can also be done later in a mission when in flight to realign if needed.

DCS: Viper Mini updates

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll explore the Ground Map, or GM, and Sea modes of the Viper’s air-to-ground fire control radar mode. In a later video we’ll discuss the Ground Moving Target, or GMT mode, once complete.

A-G radar mode operate in both the navigation and air-to-ground master modes, and it provides an all-weather radar-generated image of the terrain, buildings, and other large features ahead of the aircraft. In GM and Sea modes, the radar can provide a detailed imagery that can then be used to set a sensor point of interest and or cue other sensors like a targeting pod.

Commonly Used Keys:

  • Display Management Switch (DMS) Aft: Right Alt + .
  • Target Management Switch (TMS) Forward: Right Control + Up Arrow
  • Target Management Switch (TMS) Aft: Right Control + Down Arrow
  • Radar Cursor Switch Aft: .
  • Radar Cursor Switch Forward: ;
  • Radar Cursor Switch Left: ,

DCS: Viper Mini-Updates

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll discuss the ground moving target, or GMT, mode of the fire control radar in air to ground mode. GMT allows you detect surface targets moving between 8 and 75 knots based on settings. This is a useful tool for locating enemy forces moving along roads and cross-country in all weather conditions.

DCS: Viper Mini-Updates

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll discuss the use of Mark Points in the Viper.

A Mark Point location can be designated through the HUD, the HMCS, radar, or targeting pod, and stores the location in steerpoints 26 to 30.
This is useful for returning to a target, and later, sharing over the datalink between flight members. Later, Mark Points through the HMCS and sharing Mark Points between team members will be added.
