New i9 9900k Rift in VR

Recommended Posts

Got my new build done a few days ago.

Finally got DCS and Voice Attack all installed and set up on the new system.

Running the i9 9900k on an EVGA Z390 Dark MB. 32 GB 3200 MHz DDR4 ram. Rest of specs in sig.

All I can say so far is Wow! Loving the performance I am seeing so far using my Rift. Flying the Spit over Normandy. Finally I can run shadows and mirrors. Shadows on High, terrain shadows on flat only.

Seeing fps in the 60 and 70's over terrain (ASW is off), and 90 fps over water even when some terrain in view.

Running PD of 1.5 with some fairly high graphics settings. All smooth as a baby's butt.

Still doing some tweaking. CPU at stock , have not begun to overclock it yet which I will be doing soon.

Came from an i7 4820k @ 4.50 GHz and 16GB DDR3 ram.

Very pleased so far with the results I am seeing in VR on the new rig.

That's outstanding! Nice step-up from the i7 then it seems. I am due for an upgrade later this year as well and am taking notes. :)

now just add ott, and set 1.1 ss, and then you can raise your pd values to 2.0.

I’m also thinking about building a new rig. Very similar to yours. Are you also flying the f-18? I’m curious to know what is the performance benefit for that plane.

Cheers

Well I have it along with the PG map however have not gone in and set up the controls yet.

Will try to do so here in the next few days.

I would think it would be at the least as good as Normandy and likely a little better.

now just add ott, and set 1.1 ss, and then you can raise your pd values to 2.0.

With oculus tray tool set with 1.1 supersampling, whatever the pixel density is set in DCS doesn't matter : it will run 1.1 because ott is an overrider (with DCS, and it's the same using oculus debug tool).

Btw you can verify this using the Hud layer, showing the number actually in use when running DCS (1.01 if you set 1.0, or 1.71 if you set 1.7 in ott, overrideing the DCS pd setting), and also the gpu usage that correspound to this ss override.

what's the benefit of using OTT? So one need to start OTT before DCS and do the changes?

I don't use OTT or ODT if the game/app has a pixel density setting.

But the benefit could be to use a more specific PD number (1.36 instead of 1.3 or 1.4 in DCS) or dedicated to profile ASW option.

I use it to create individual game profiles for my Rift.

If the game does not have it's own PD setting, I use the OTT to set the SS.

I also have it set to switch audio, when Oculus Home starts the audio switches to Rift, when I exit Oculus Home it switches back to my speakers.

Also use it to set my ASW setting, for DCS I prefer ASW off. So have that set in the game profile in OTT.

I cant start DCS using OTT profiles because it crashes the sim, I can set a profile up but have to use steam or oculas to start DCS.

Strange I have not had that behavior using OTT , and have been using it for quite some time.

Nice build!

I also noticed the big improvement for CV1 after upgrading to RTX2080Ti from GTX1080.

Now I'm thinking to upgrade my 6700K to 9900K or 9700K, but doubt there will be noticeable improvement.

Have it running at 5.1 GHz on all 8 cores now, rock solid.

I saw a large improvement on my end, going from i7 4820k @ 4.5 GHz, DDR3 ram , and the 2080 Ti to this new build with the same 2080 Ti. I did not see a big leap on this previous system when I changed from 1080 Ti to 2080 Ti.

However yours would not be as large a leap as you have the 6700k so not sure how much you would see.

Hmmm to update or not to update? I’m currently on a I7 5930K@4.6Ghz / 1080ti. I was under the impression that going to a 9900K / 2080ti would only marginally improve my VR experience: currently running pd1.2, AAx16, shadows low, MSAAx2 (rift cv1)

I would think you would see a similar improvement as I did, but who knows.

Not sure you would need 9900k, probably 9700k would be just as good. Be aware these 8 core chips run pretty warm so look at good cooling solutions especially if overclocking.

The 9900k gives Hyper Threading, I disabled that on my rig though as my games do not benefit from it and I reduced my core temps by about 6-8 degrees c doing so.
