[NO BUG] AGM-88 fired when jettisoned

Hi.

Using selective jettison stations the AGM-88 fire. (Using Emerg Jett they work well).

Thanks.

Antonio.

Same here, Yup pretty funny, jumped by bandits I had to jettison two. When I peripherally saw the flash and smoke I initially thought I had been hit. But then I saw them at my 12 high, streaking away side by side. Hilarious.

SEL JETT is supposed to launch HARMs, one per press, in the anti-compromise mode, according to the NATOPS. Seems like correct behavior.

Yeah, I think you are correct:

2-67. SELECT JETT Switch.

Located on the pilot’s left vertical control panel, the select jettison switch is a five-positionswitch used to select the station or type of jettison to be accomplished. The SAFE position inhibits all select jettison functions. The L FUS MSL and R FUS MSL or left and right fuselage missile position selects the respective fuselage station for selective jettison. The RACK/LCHR position selects weapons and stores on BRU-32s for selective jettison. The STORES positionselects weapons (on VERs, MERs, TERs, and BRU-32s), Maverick launcher and weapon, air-to-air launcher and weapon, droptanks and data pods on BRU-32s for selected jettison with the exception of HARM, which is fired off unguided

  • 2 years later...

When selective jettisoning HARMs, their rocket motor engages and flies off to the nether..

Pressing "Emergency jettison", and they fall off as expected.

Tested on newest open beta build 2.7.7.14727, in Caucasus, Marianas and Persian Gulf.. All with same results.

  • Smartis changed the title to AGM-88C HARM engage motors when selective-jettisoned
  • 7 months later...

I have had to jettison the agm 88 harms twice in the air. Both times they will fire straight off instead of just free falling. I set my jettison to stores and push the jettison button. My stations are selected correctly.

Thus it's correct as IRL I'm interested why the HARM is fired straight away instead of just being dropped when jettisoned. Could be a problem sending it to an unpredictable point of impact...no? Any thoughts on this?

If you drop the missile, it's possible it could be recovered and studied/reverse-engineered. Firing it off deprives/reduces the possibility of anyone from being able to recover sensitive materials.

So they should fire too if emergency jettison is pressed? Or should it fire only if it’s selective jettison?

Thanks for your thoughts which makes totally sense, though I think there wouldn't be much to recover when the missile hits the ground with maybe 400 ~ 600 kts

You're not necessarily jettisoning it high enough or fast enough for it to hit the ground at that speed. If you fire it off, however, it may hit the ground at the speed of Mach 2 or 3, declassifying it pretty definitely. 🙂 HARM is particularly sensitive since it contains radar data, if the enemy gets their hands on it, they'll know how it tracks them and will develop countermeasures specifically targeted against that.

Fact check me on this, but doesn't a fired HARM have a self-destruct timer in case it doesn't hit a target? I imagine that timer is only triggered when the missile motor burns, so in addition to yeeting the missile off somewhere difficult to locate, the missile should self destruct before hitting the ground.
