I'm starting work on what I haven't seen represented yet, the filthy and grimy cats of VF-2's 1987 Cruise. These are just early tests and will need much more detail with salt and sun burn added to them.

Looking realls awesome! 1987 was quite interesting from a skinners perspective. It seems to me that the tomcat squadrons had quite a mix of paintjobs, some shiny light-grey cats with HiVis markings and also really subdued, battle-worn low visibility schemes.

Boy is it a challenge to match the TPS Grey tones, all refence pictures naturally paint it in a different tone with each different picture. Nor do I think that FS 35237/36370 work very well within sim to best represent how sitting on the flight deck matures these cats. Anyway, back to more testing and work.

The problem is photography, changes in paint mix, weathering, and lighting all combine to influence how our eyes see the TPS colors in photographs. What film was used, how was it processed, were they scanned Kodachrome slides and someone forgot to adjust for the blue tinting, what ISO did they use, was it overcast or full sun, was the jet freshly painted.

There's no 100% way to get it perfect, except for everyone to use the same hex values for the colors and then make small brightness adjustments from there. It used to be you needed to take whatever published hex value for a color and drop it by 10% brightness so it wouldn't look washed out. But, a while back I stopped using the adjustment layers in the template and personally preferred the overall color balance.

Add to all that they keep changing the lighting in the sim, and the shaders as well. You need to compare a bright, direct summer sunlight photo to similar conditions in-sim to see if it correctly washes out the contrast of the TPS.

Another thing, It seems to me most often the corrosion control spot paint used is close to the light ghost gray used on the underside of the jet, so that's usually what I use for my corrosion control layers. If you want to get fancy, you can even add some color variation in the brush by a few %, but that means no two passes will have the exact same color. But it adds that visual variation from panel to panel if that's what you seek.

Is the paint kit that is in the first post still up to date? I'm trying to edit the LAU-7 pylon but it only has the Base + UV Guide as layers and doesn't include weathering.

Nice! Hope to see those on the available to download

I made these for someone.  But I do plan on making an earlier full color set of VF-31.  Probably circa 1988.  These are from 1991.

Did anyone manage to nail down where the lod file is that makes all the tomcats go grey at about 1nm?   Not the 3 in 1, I've done that, but the one that's for further ranges?

That is the 3 in 1 Lod file.  It's for farther out ranges.  The standard mip maps apply for closer in.

No, the 3 in 1 only goers out to a mile or so.  There's another level after that.  Check out the standard white or hi vis skins, and zoom out in F2 view.  You'll see what I mean.

The most extreme distance LOD model is untextured, that's why you're seeing that. Past the first LOD the A and B share the long distance LODs, with the final being the F-14B_LOD_Distant.edm. Since it's untextured it has a roughly ghost gray color which is what makes it seem to pop.

My question is what are you doing that makes you actually notice this? You have to zoom out extremely far to see this, or extremely far in at a very, very distant jet to see that transition. In any practical situation in DCS you aren't going to see that transition.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to question me.  But thanks for the answer none the less!

We have a SATAL team, and we use a distinctive livery set to avoid blue-on-blue situations.   The issue we have is that the tomcat suddenly changes colour at the 1nm mark, so we're getting false positive IDs
