Put together some numbers, after testing I think the F14-B might the fastest Jet in DCS on the deck. Please feel free to double check and correct.

Test on a “Standard Day”

59° F

29.92 Altimeter

Yeah I can put that together! Give me a few days.

I'm suprised that the F-18C is so high up on the list. I was expecting the F-15 and SU-27 being faster. Also expected the mirage 2000 being faster than where it is now.

Not any scientific data, just suprised.

You and I both, we even did some drag racing off the runway and fly at deck till ran out of fuel and the F14B literally smoked...I mean blew the effin doors off the F15c ... I was very surprised and with a big smile I might add!

Updated OP

Interestingly the M2000 and mig29 actually benefited from the increased temperature while the F18 suffered the most proportionally.

Great test and interesting results!

If you are in the mood for further testing, maybe you can do this...

Full afterburner takeoff at Nellis and record speeds at the end of runway.

Clean, full fuel, standard day...the tricky part will be rotating, immediately retracting gear/flaps, and leveling off right above runway.

Thanks, yeah that would be a interesting test. We did do a bunch of drag racing of the runway and level flight on deck till no fuel. The 14 smoked everything, iirc the mig29 was its closest match.

Updated with Viggen!

So I think I found glitch with the Viggen. The clean sub 1kft is 830 and 866 at -12 and +15c however if you load up with 6-rj24s and shoot them off you go into turbo mode that gets you to 927 and 970kgs!

So nothing scientific and by no means official...

Clean, full internal fuel, 59F, 29.92, Nellis runway 3L, F/A-18C vs F-14B

Full afterburner takeoff, level off right above runway, and I measured the speed at the end of the runway.

Both the Hornet and Tomcat reached a speed of about 420kts.

I was surprised because I thought the Tomcat would surely win this, but that Hornet can move!

Overall, I really don't notice the Tomcat being that superior in any performance category. Sure, top speed of course goes to the Tomcat and maybe acceleration at higher speeds but the Hornet is right there or superior in most others from what I am seeing so far.

the F18 suffered the most proportionally.

i once tried to have a PG mission with realistic temperatures.

1. realistic temperatures (40+°C) are not even possible to set up, was around 31°C max IIRC

2. Hornet's top speed goes down to like M 1.2ish in full AB at 36kft...

After that I tried a super cold environment, but I couldn't raise the top speed above M 1.8 without adding those negative drag flux compensating pylons rdlaugh.png

The F/A-18C's reactions to temperatures are really awkward...

This looks like some shenanigans with the engine modeling on some of these birds.

How is the F/A-18C beating out the F-15C?

Why do the Mirage, MiG-29, and Viggen get faster with hotter air temp?

Why does the F/A-18C lose so much more speed than others with hotter air temp?

And that mention of clean vs. empty pylons after firing off weapons really makes me wonder...

The F-15C in DCS has undermodelled engines despite whatever they claim. The F-14B should smoke everyone, but the F-15C should start catching it. The F-15E is a beast on the deck- especially the -129 powered jets. If they are clean they can just about supercruise on the deck.

T/W ratios for Hornet and Tomcat in DCS...

These are the lightest weights I could get the aircraft in the ME with full internal fuel only

I am also finding multiple thrust values for the F-14B

F/A-18C

Weight: 36,445

Thrust: 35,500

T/W: 0.97

F-14B

Weight: 60,239

Thrust: 56,400 (various online sources) 60,000 (HB manual) 60,400 (NATOPS)

T/W: 0.93, 0.99, 1.00

Err...wave drag. The F14 is lower than all of those aircrafts once over 1.2.

So class that means the F14 doesn't need as much thrust to reach a certain speed. This tells you the lowly TF30 engines reached in excess of M2.4x. then again the engines out accelerated the f110 engines past m1.6 or m1.8

Another tidbit.. having a high aspect ratio (wings out) had lower induced drag thus.. lower thrust requirement to maintain STR.
