Fairly disapointed by the training missions

Viking 1-1

Recommended Posts

So after I jumped into the game with the Hornet some people told me to "give the A10C a try" because it is not early Access, but 100% done.

So I purchased the A10C in the easter sale. My expectations were pretty high since I love the EA Hornet already and was expecting a much better sim.

But I have to say that my expectations were not met. Not due to the plane, but do to a lot of bugs in the "done" product, especially in the Training missions.

Here are my issues:

- Click "Space" to continue. --> took me a while to realize that I had to press the trigger instead

- Voiceover jumps from one part to another before finishing the entire text (Startup Training)

- Voicever repeats text in the middle of the Mission from the beginning (Take off and NAV Mission)

- Game doesn´t recognize that I put up the TACAN Sequence, as being told, so Mission does not continue… (also Take off and Nav Mission)

I´m very happy with the game itself, I really love the Hornet but from the "100% Plane" I was really expecting less bugs…

So Maybe I give the A10 another try later in the year or I never touch it again and this was a bad purchase for me. Time will tell...

Before you call everything a "bug": RTFM & try again! Thank you. :music_whistling:

No tutorial is comprehensive enough in DCS. If you can run the cold start tutorial fine, that's the only one I find useful. Otherwise, the manual and YouTube are better teachers than the tutorials. Seriously, if you rely on tutorials, you're not gonna learn with much depth. There's a lot you'll be missing.

Try this tutorial then and let me know what you think. The file is linked in the bottom. Cheers!

Hey Viking.

Though the A10c has been around for quite a long time the tutorials can be a bit fiddly now and then. (Though update is in progress as i heard for this great module.) This being said i found that these so called bugs are not necessarily gamebreaking.

Here are the so called workarounds i used when i ran into these kinds of problems:

- dont push any buttons that are highlighted until the tutor finishes the instructions (voice wont jump)

- let the tutor finish what hes saying and press buttons highlighted after (this way the game will recognize u actually did the changes)

- if the game didnt acknowledge the button change u just did, change the button back to its original position and then to the desired position ofter the guy stops speaking (ex. your TACAN problem)

- try to match the instructors asked airspeed (this messes up weapon employment sometimes)

Having all this in mind dont neglect that there is a huge book for the A10c :D and a lot of tutorials on the net (as the others pointed out).

And not least Baltic will come with a new tutorial campaign soon hopefully :DD

Hope this helps.

oh and one more thing i forgot that is kind of important

- let the guy finish what he has to say + a couple of seconds (2-3) before pushing SPACEBAR (it seems that some triggers only activate after specific queues. my speculation only but it works)

Because A-10C is quite old so in comparison to F/A-18 ofcourse there are some, a product that was once standalone and not part of DSC World.

That's why it's getting a larger update which you might call it a "service pack" if you will. I hope it does looks something like an all-around update.

The detection of user input during training does indeed seem to be module specific but nobody is perfect, indeed this should be updated for A-10C.

On F/A-18C it's even too responsive in a way, when you do early and it detects it skips forward to the next step cutting out the existing step in the middle ... maybe that's good IDK, probably okay because both options are possible, click to skip or leave if you want to listen to the end, but one has to know this ahead.

Yep, this is a non issue given all the resources available.

Exactly! The YouTube videos are fantastic at showing how to employ weapons. You just take that info as a basic outline, and then practice, practice, practice.

I’m working up the beginning of the A10C learning curve also. I agree, the tutorials are a disappointment. I bought the Maple Flag missions thinking they would help. They are, but not in the way intended. They are performance checks for what is already learned. Instead of using them mission by mission, which also was frustrating as hell as a lot has changed since they were made, I instead have been watching the ReconStewart series of Basic, Advanced and Tactical Campaigns for the A10C. I set my Surface up next to the main computer A10C, watch a tutorial, maybe even a couple of times, takes some notes and then perform the instruction presented. It is working rather nicely. I’m up to advanced maneuvers now, but I still drill what has previously been learned. Pattern work, ILS, Tacan etc. I have spent some time looking at all of them and feel fairly good about where I will be going and what I’ll be learning. There will be more after that I’m sure, perhaps some of the ED missions, or Bunyaps On The Range, but for now I’m concentrating on the basics, navigation, manuevers and becoming comfortable with all the doodads, thingamagigs, radios, lights, buzzers,. dials, switches and yada yada yada. It’s going to go on for some time. But it is coming. Enjoy it, you’ll be there awhile!

And.. Oh yea.... I RTFM!

The "problem" occurs, if you changed the "spacebar" default keybind from "Trigger" to anything else. The script assumes an unaltered control setting... :smartass:

But yeah, that happened to me, as well, back then. Took me a moment to figure it out.:D

I'm going to politely disagree here. I never reassigned controls from defaults as I have a TM Hotas setup. The tutorials have a mind of there own. Sometimes the space bar will work, most of the times it will not. However the trigger works most of the time. Very often the IP will just disappear and never return even when I take the time to pause after instructions. My uninformed opinion, they are broken.

Yepp, I'm on it.

Crazy though that after I bought the Tomcat to Beginn with I almost immediately switched to the Hornet and now the Hog seems to be THE plane for me...

If you love ground pounding it's hard to fault the A-10C. One of the problems is you're at the mercy of enemy fighters if you don't have an escort. That's one of the advantages of the F/A-18C.

I love the A-10, I really do. But the more time I spend flying the Harrier the more fond of her I grow... even though she has shorter legs, less ordnance and is much more fragile, the agility, speed and different take off and landing options - simply love them.

On A-10 training, I haven’t tried it for a long time but things evolved in DCS and it is really difficult to keep up with all the changes trigger - wise (trust me, I know something about it!). Fortunately you have a good manual, tonnes of excellent YouTube videos and Maple Flag’s missions to test what you have learned (and learn some new things in the process).

I'm confused as to where this NTTR Training Campaign is?

In your link the only A10 campaign is The Enemy Within 3.0? But the Trailer is in the Causaus map?

Are your campaigns working with the current version of DCS?

The training campaign is in the making, and as Viking say you can find the first mission of it as a demo (beta version, so there may be some small bugs). All my other campaigns are working with current version of DCS and I try to keep them up to date always... as far as I know there are no outstanding bugs at the moment.
