Love the aquarium.

I love it too, it's a 120 gal reef tank (with an additional 80 gal sump)

Here's a better pic:

(I've got a very nice frogspawn that I've grown from a tiny frag in the algae covered "jail" cuz I had a fish at the time that was making a meal out of it)

Another pic inside the tank:

Also, a 125 gal discus tank in the dining room

And my wife's round 90

Hey Sim Pilots

I'd like to kick off a forum dedicated to DIY cockpits, to share ideas and get motivated to evolve my old build.

I'd welcome anyone who wants to post an image of their DIY rig and any tips or hints on what they've done. My rig is below, built specifically for DCS Huey, with collective and cyclic controls (modified G920). I'm using two AURA bass shakers and a NLR V3 motion platform (providing 2DOF motion).

MY TIPS:

Motion: I am going back to a no-motion setup as I found it to be disruptive more so than immersive. Would really like some comments from others on the G-Seat or other "motion/G Forces" seat setups.

VR: This used to be a 4 monitor setup in a "T" layout but despite the lower resolution of the CV1, I won't be going back to monitors mainly due to the depth perception/3D that VR offers.

Shakers: Bass shakers are an excellent method of getting more immersion. I'm using Andre's Sim Shaker software and it's awesome.

I'd really like to see other people's setups and TIPS for builds, to get some inspiration to re-invigorate/update/improve my build.

I was thinking that we needed a thread for guys who do not build dedicated Sim Pits but utilize their office/desk space to be able to fly and work from the same area.

And I found thread.

Here is mine, I am still waiting for a company to release a new Button box but keeps been pushed back.  So while I wait I will present unfinished set up.

The Stick gets moved under the desk and sits on top of my speaker. The Throttle slides under the plinth that the monitor sits on and the two Cougar's can if required  be push up and away.

Here is my set up. Up until Christmas, I was flying purely in 2D with track iR, but got my G2 in December and have been mostly using that since then. I made the mounting console, seat frame and throttle etc mount myself, and its obviously Hornet orientated. Currently deciding how best to add Viper functionality, as I have separate Cougar with TUSBA and Real simulator force sensing base and stick for the HOTAS. Although, currently no time to learn 2 jets with the limited flight time I have, so that may wait a while.

I have been developing an upgrade for general car racing seats and came about with a very good solution which is not only much more comfortable than stock, but it also raises the seat substantially and makes it feel a lot more like a true aircraft seat.

Its got spring mounts attached to an aluminum box where I have installed a bass shaker that vibrates the seat and does not waste the oscillations to base and floor.

I will be fabricating one more of these to a friend so if there's anyone interested let me know (pm).

Cannot compete with the full size pits some people are making, but for VR it serves me well.

@jskiboDid you use a car bucket seat for your build? I can get one dirt cheap and wondered how low to the ground you sit them? They'll be a good option for a butt kicker etc?

Its an old Obutto seat, but switching to a BMW 3 series sport seat shortly.  Height is just determined by the height of the frame, I have the T slot frame about 12" off the floor, but it can really be any height you build it to.

Yes, thanks for that. I guess it's what feels nice with the rudder pedals. Thanks for the inspiration!

Ok think I'm done now.

This is a working Desk/Sim Pit. So you must be able to pack everything away to clear the work area.

Looks the same as before just added two Cubesim monitors and those who are Eagle eyed yes it took 7 months to get them.

Greetings from the new Dude.

This is my 'ride, 'One More Time. She's a slow project...I started building her in 2005 and still haven't finished !. She is built full scale using the original NAA drawings and contains as much original equipment that I can find / afford.

Her last outing this year is end of August and then she is going to be gutted so that I can install replacement top longerons manufactured to the correct dimension. I'm also going to be attempting to re-create the windshield assembly by using the original drawings, instead of using odd bits of Ali extrusion I had laying about.

Currently, there is a 200 Watt sound system bolted up under the seat / back of the armour plate, and earlier this year, I installed a 3 lever Saitek throttle quadrant behind the instrument pane that I have jury-rigged to the original quadrant. When I take her to shows / events, I get the public to climb in her and I talk them though how top start up a Merlin...using the Accusim '51.

Don't panic, I have now uploaded the DCS '51 and will be using that form now on !.

When she is gutted, I will be installing a PC rudder assembly to the back of the firewall connected to her pedals using a single rod, and I have a AV8R PC joystick that I am going to modify and install (I'll be keeping the original !).

My plan is to get a decent PC system and then go down the VR route 🙂

Anybody else using a full size '51 'pit ?.

This is the winner, right here!  Wow!  Outstanding, P-51D OMT!!

My aim is to make a generic cockpit "tub" so I can mount flight control hardware and switch boxes and then using VR see if I can use it for multiple aircraft.  It won't be a 1-to-1 location match with the VR cockpit, but as long as I know most of the switches' locations by touch, I think it will work.
