The Viggen is equipped with two radios:

The primary radio with pre stored frequencies and a manual dialable frequency: FR22

The secondary radio with 3 preset frequencies + guard: FR24

With the Mode selector (also referenced as the FR 24 mode selector) you can choose between the following modes:

NORM + LARM: Uses the FR22 with the selected frequency & monitors the guard frequency.

H: Uses the FR24 with the guard frequency.

E: Uses the FR24 with the preset E frequency.

F: Uses the FR24 with the preset F frequency.

G: Uses the FR24 with the preset G frequency.

NORM: Uses the FR22 with the selected frequency, does NOT monitor guard frequency.

I'm not sure if the guard frequency is always used on the FR24 (I think so), but:

You are always useing just the one pushbutton on the controlstick for radio communication.

With the mode selector, you select the radio that you want to use.

With the button on the stick, you are talking.

So the discrepancies start in the bindings menu:

You have there two bindins:

FR-22 Push to talk

FR-24 Push to talk

According to the manual, the mode selector and logical thinking, the bindigns are wrong.

There should be only ONE push to talk function. The decision if the FR22 or FR24 is used (and which frequency on the FR24) is done with the mode selector.

I read in the SFI, description of the Viggen that there are two buttons that´s used for push to talk.

The Push to talk button on the stick is used when you want to communicate with FR22 and the button labled SM on FR24, used for transmit/recieve, is used when you use FR24 for communicating on the backup channels H,E,F, or G.

The button labled TRÅD is used to talk to the groundcrew when they are connected with cable from their hedsets to the outlets on either wings. When you press that button in The game you get to the Communication Menu but it would be nice if they could programme that button in the game to that when you press the button you get to the Ground Crew Menu right away.

Ok, I see...

I must admit, that this still seems weird for me.

Could you answer me then the following questions:

Mode selector on NORM&LÄRM:

FR-22 Pushbutton: Transmit according the settings on the FR-22 panel.

FR-24 Pushbutton: ??? Maybe transmit on the guard frequency?

Mode selector on H:

FR-22 Pushbutton: ??? No function?

FR-24 Pushbutton: Transmit on the guard frequency.

Mode selector on E, F or G:

FR-22 Pushbutton: ??? No function?

FR-24 Pushbutton: Transmit on the preset E, F or G frequency.

Mode selector on NORM:

FR-22 Pushbutton: Transmit according the settings on the FR-22 panel.

FR-24 Pushbutton: ??? No function?

What would no function mean? That the radio is turned off? Or that it just receives, but not transmit?

According to the SFI, you have it right and "no function" means that the radio is turned off entirely. In NORM+LARM mode FR 24 is in receive-only mode and its push to talk button does nothing if you press it.

Normally you're not supposed to use FR 24 to transmit at all, it's an emergency backup radio with very weak output (3 W antenna power) and AM only.

I don't know why they didn't unify the PTT buttons but presumably it was cheaper/easier to have two.

Ok, I understand, finaly I got it. Feels still a little bit weird, yes...

So there is clearly no bug and it was the lack of my understanding, thank you guys for helping me out.

Still need to check if SRS also works correctly.

Interesting read. I have always thought it was weird how in SRS you switch frequency on FR22 and FR24 with the Mode Selector. I think I understand better now why that happens.
