While tuning settings for VR I noticed something odd

So I recently upgraded from a Rift to a Rift S and now that I can actually READ the cockpit I want to spend most of my time flying in VR. To that end I started working on tuning my settings to get the right performance.

As it is a lot easier to tweak settings outside of VR, I set up a basic F5 test mission in Nevada with no AI planes. Using non-VR m,ode with a 4K monitor, I then boot up and just tweak settings without moving or flying around. The view is fixed.

I figure if I have good FPS on a 4k monitor that should be a fairly good proxy.

However while doing this I noticed something odd. When I first start up the mission with my current settings, I am getting around 100fps. Pretty solid between about 90-100fps. This however gets lower and lower the longer I let the sim run. And not slowly.

Starting around 100fps, within 5 minutes its down to around 50fps! Again, with nothing really changing. I don't even look around. Completely static view.

Memory leak?

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

In the matter of just a few minutes? Not likely. The CPU is water cooled, and I've never had issues with the GPU before but I will break out the diagnostics.

Exiting the mission and restarting it immediately jumps back to 100fps though before starting the same decline.

Yeah that sounds memory leaky... I know I'm super technical there, but I didn't make the code ;)…

On the other hand I haven't seen that myself. Does it stop at 50FPS? I.e. you start at 100, it declines to 50 and stays there? Or does it keep going lower?

CPU/GPU could heat up and cool down really quick, even in seconds. In your case of several minutes, it could be the overall ventilation of your PC case, or maybe something else...

Anyway, monitor your HW by using free tools like CPUID HWMonitor could help you to locate the problem.

I'm moving DCS over to my SSD then I'll do some more testing.

Sorry I don't know what that is. Can you tell me how?

Here is a copy of the mission file if you want the same. I'm not doing ANY THING just starting it up and sitting there.

I moved DCS over to my SSD and then fired up SpeedFan and MSI Afterburner for metrics and started the mission. Turns out I was indeed getting some thermal throttling on the GPU after a couple minutes. I manually increased the fan speed for testing and that eliminated the thermal issue.

The FPS is still varying wildly with occasional dips all the way into the 20s but its a lot better than it was.

I made a short video if anyone wants to see the numbers.

Those random frame drops are driving me nuts. In VR I'm getting a rock solid 40fps except ever minute or two when it plummets to 25fps then climbs back up. And this is still doing nothing but sitting on the runway and holding my head relatively steady.
