Happy Hornet Anniversary

Since today (possibly yesterday...) marks the one year anniversary of the Hornets EA release it’s only right to say Happy Birthday to our first 4th Gen western fast jet.

It’s been an amazing year for DCS and the release of the Hornet is the catalyst for much of the success. It feels like the community and interest has grown exponentially since the F/A-18 has been available, more so than any other release, it truly is a significant module. The interest and input of real world hornet crew and maintainers is also noticeable and probably a first for DCS on such a scale. It’s been a blast soaking up all the knowledge, enthusiasm and excitement surrounding modern fast jet operations.

Sure, at times it’s been difficult waiting for new eagerly anticipated new features but in our heart of hearts I’m sure we know these things take time. Like it or loath it, that EA I guess. It’s certainly kept us glued to Matt’s mini updates for the past 12 months. It’s acutally been a fun, if seemingly a little slow at times, process.

It may not be perfect yet, but well done ED, Wags and the Hornet team for a fantastic module and happy birthday to our Hornet. Let’s have many more years of Hornet enjoyment. It looks like there’s many more DCS wide and Hornet improvements to come, and I’m sure the 2nd year anniversary will have us flying a truly amazing jet.

.......since no one else mentioned it.

Indeed. F/A-18 is certainly my favorite module. It's come far since it first came out -- yet, it still has far to go until completion as well. Great job to everyone working on the Hornet. Looking forward to all the new systems to come.

I literally flew only the Tomcat since it's been released - until I got my Rift recently which I thought I'd best try out in the Hornet instead, and I'm having a hard time trying to fly anything else at the moment icon_razz.gif

And I'm totally looking forward to the VR improvements as well als the JSOW and TGP coming soon twilightsmile.png

I appreciate the sentiment and it has indeed been an interesting year. Hard to believe a whole year has passed already again. But one thing I would like to point out is that the Hornet is not the first western 4th generation jet in DCS. Even excluding FC3 that would be the Mirage 2000C.

+1. I fly pretty much today most aircraft in DCS, but still consider the F18 to be my “go to” aircraft. Just so versatile and a pleasure to fly.

The Hornet was what got me into DCS. Seeing Wags' vid on YT, Ep.03 Cold Start in fact made me decide to invest in a PC (had a Mac before) and DCS.

Still today, after expanding DCS with several modules including the Tomcat, the Hornet is still my most favorite plane. I love it! :)

Although I think it'll get serious competition when the Viper is released. :smartass:

My heart belongs to the Mirage 2000

I'd have never even remotely guessed that icon_redface.gif

I can say, despite RAZBAM being themselves and not the quickest bugfixers, the Mirage is definately worth it. There really is no reason not to get it. It's far easier to understand the objections from parts of the community when it comes to the Harrier though, but even that one still is fun.

I had fun with the Hornet from the very beginning of it's EA and even though I always have been waiting for certain features and some fixes as well, I never got bored with the module and there's still so much to learn or just to improve my skills in. And it's great to get things step by step, kinda is easier that trying to learn a full suite at once. This way we can concentrate on the things we have and have enough time to get used to them until new things get added. That way we'll be good at operating the thing once it's finished. Someone who waits until that point will be overwhelmed with a lot of complexity at once we didn't have when we learnt all that stuff in little steps. And basically, the same applies to other EA modules as well, it just might take longer to get to the finished state. With all the modules, there's always something to spend time on, just waiting for a certain thing of a certain module just isn't the best way to DCS. The world is quite big already.

Generally, if anyone asks me which modules to get, I try to recommend them:

Hornet

Tomcat

Viggen

Mirage

Harrier

Typically in that order, priority changes depending on personal preferences. Someone more interested in A/A will get the Mirage recommendation above the Viggen for example, for obvious reasons. Will be interesting to see where I'd put the Viper... probably #3 or even 4 initially, but then ascending the ladder as more features come by. I mean, basically I'd just say: "If you have got the money, throw it at them and get 'em all!"
