From military.wikia.org:

Although the A-4's use as a training and adversary aircraft would continue well into the 1990s, the Navy began removing the aircraft from its front line attack squadrons in 1967, with the last ones (Super Foxes of VA-55/212/164) being retired in 1976.

So I deleted the 1.41 mod and installed the updated one (in the correct location.) The in game icon is saying it's the 2.0 version, it sounds different. But I kept my joystick key binds which shouldn't have happened. I also lose the ability to map my pedals or throttle to an axis (like wheel brakes, throttle or rudder). They have red exclamation marks in those rows. No problem with other modules.

Any ideas? I attempted deleting reinstalling the mod and tried some stuff on the controls page. Love this mod, so if there's any devs reading this Thanks.

i would have thought that Tomcat and A-7 would have been a more realistic combination but might be wrong

Did you try to close DCS and delete the corresponding input folder for the A-4?

I had exactly the same issue. Yes, it's caused by the old key binding file. You need to delete it, of course only the files for the A-4E. It's not in the "Mods" folder but in the "Input" folder parallel to it.

So delete everything in here? Or the whole A-4E-C folder?

Hi!

I'd like to create missions with this superb A-4. Do you know when it was retired from the Navy? Is Tomcats escorting A-4 a realitic scenario?

Thx 🙂

Not entirely. Navy retired A-4s in mid 70s as Mud has said above. That would make it possible for earliest Tomcat versions being able to serve together with A-4s but we have later Tomcats. Marines operated the Skyhawk up to mid 80s apparently, choosing not to get A-7. But they were mostly more upgraded versions: A-4F which is kind of similar to a degree, and A-4M which is quite different. Don't know if they were operated on same ships with Tomcats though.

In the end though, what matters is what you want to see, if you want to make a mission with F-14 escorting A-4, why not? :).

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

I suspect not; the catapult launching gear on the two was very different, with the A-4 using a bridle arrangement that connected to points in the main gear wells, presumably on the main wing spar, whereas the F-14 has the nose-gear launch bar and hold back device.

The Cat shuttle itself appears very different in both these cases, so I would suspect that the A-4s would have been allocated to those older carriers equipped with the facility to bridle launch, whilst the more modern carriers had the F-14s but couldn't support the A-4s.

I could stand to be corrected on these suppositions however.

Do we need to delete the old inputs?  I didn't and it works fine and shows the new controls such as left and right braking for axis controls.

Controllers: TrackIR 5, Thrustmaster HOTAS X, Saitek Throttle Quadrant (with DIY removable collective mod), Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals.

Oh yes, I didn't think of the bridle vs launch bar situation, of course! They probably served with last naval Phantoms on bridle equipped ships.

As far as I know, yes, and in my case throttle and yaw axes weren't working for me until I deleted and re-did input assignments.

I always follow the developers instructions, that way I avoid a lot of bugs that may creep later on.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I'm impressed with this mod, the A-4 is the jet I didn't even know I wanted.
The visual and audio feedback that you get while maneuvering is great, and the cockpit is very nice.
Thank you for doing all this work for free!

Now I need to learn how to make good use of this thing, a nice challenge for someone who used only modern jets so far... 🙃

I just downloaded the latest version A-4E-C 2.0-beta-1:

  • Nice to see the better stall and F-14 like shake when turning at slow speed.  It certainly does feel like a much different plane with the EFM.
  • Nice selection of Instant Action Missions a liveries too!
  • 🇨🇦 Thank you very much to the A-4E-C Community of Developers.

Just an educated guess from my side, so could be wrong. The C++ dll looks to me like it's compiled for runtime version VC10. You can download the runtime redistributable from Microsoft:

x64 https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/download/details.aspx?id=14632

Win32 https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/download/details.aspx?id=5555

Not sure if you only need x64 or also Win32, but doesn't hurt to have both installed.

You don't need x86 because only binaries which are compiled for the same platform can be loaded by a program. Since DCS is x64 you only need x64. We think this is required because we are using a newer version of the VC++ SDK than ED and in the newer version there is a new dll which is a dependency of some of the other redistributable dlls.

If anyone is interested:

I added a Joystick Bind for the AirBrake. It is good for anyone with an X55 or X56 that wants to use the Slider on the Throttle for Air Brake Retract and Extend.

I just Inserted the line into the dafault.lua located in:  \Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Mods\Aircraft\A-4E-C\Input\joystick

{down = iCommandPlaneAirBrakeOff, up = iCommandPlaneAirBrakeOn, name = _('Speedbrake Slider - CLOSE/OPEN'), category = {_('Throttle Grip')}}, -- for Slider Switch on X56/X55 or any 2 Position Switch |UP = Pressed & DOWN = Released|

(Controls completely redone from scratch here)

I noticed the toe brake axes are literally dead in the first half and ED's axis manager doesn't allow me to compensate for that as I'd need the 4th slider there to fix it myself. It's usually a range definition thing (goes from -1 to +1, but only should be from 0 to +1).

Also the joystick mapping for toggling the hook doesn't work, but the keyboard one does. The definition within the luas is different, so I just took over the one from the keyboard file for now.

The FM feels great already. But the Scoots seemed to be a bit slow and underpowered to me. Wasn't getting anywhere close to the 585kts on the deck I've seen for the E model. Limit was somewhere between 450 and 500, but I might have done something wrong, just did a single flight so far. At least I didn't have any brakes, spoilers or flaps sticking out for sure rdlaugh.png

One thing that bugged me multiple times though was the VR interaction with the damn flight stick. When trying to manipulate some switches in the center console (weapons stuff), I accidently grabbed the stick a few times with the controller which immediately pulled the thing to the far right and pushing it forward at the same time. The grab point seems to be at the upper right corner somewhere at the front of the thing instead of being centered somewhere where the actual grip is.

At this point I'd also wish for ED giving us an option to disable stick/throttle interaction with the controllers.

Strange,

I have the same problem, with being put directly into F10 map view after loading any mission. However I definitely installed into saved games folder  and

when I tried to install the aforementioned c++ library I got message saying that my system already has a newer version of the library installed.

Any other ideas?

I followed the instruction for install and deleted the old A-4 and keybinding folders first.

regards,

Snappy

Does your saved games/dcs/mods/aircraft/a-4e-c/bin folder contain the .dll file?  That was one of the problems that were common, with certain anti-virus software detecting it as a virus and deleting it.

Other than that, all I can say is post your problem over at their discord channel and someone will help you out.

You need to check that the mod is not on any folder inside the Mods tree. In other words the installation has to be exactly: x:/user/savedgames/dcsopenbeta/mods/aircraft/a-4e-c/

then all the mods folders cockpit, etc... in it.

And I don't have any c++ libraries.. I think yu downloaded the source code.. not the mod.
