What is the difference between ACM and BFM?

Recommended Posts

Some definitions (as not everyone may understand what the acronyms mean):

Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM) are tactical movements performed by fighter aircraft during air combat maneuvering (also called ACM, or dogfighting).

Air Combat Maneuvering (also known as ACM or dogfighting) is the tactical art of moving, turning and/or situating one's fighter aircraft in order to attain a position from which an attack can be made on another aircraft. Air combat manoeuvres rely on offensive and defensive basic fighter manoeuvring (BFM) to gain an advantage over an aerial opponent.

To get good at ACM you need to get good at BFM. BFM is normally considered to be individual maneuvers, where ACM is applied to the tactics behind dogfighting as a whole.

With this in mind our BFM campaign is a series of one vs one guns only engagements against similar and dis-similar aircraft also called DACT or Dis-similar Aircraft Training. This will give you the experience to perfect your tactics, techniques and procedures in a one vs one engagement. Since only guns are used you learn quickly what you need to do to get in close for the kill (or avoid being killed). Since you fly against aircraft with different capabilities you learn what works differently against each aircraft.

Our ACM campaign ups the ante by giving you a wingman and engaging in 2 vs 2 engagements against similar and dis-similar aircraft. We also added air to air IR missiles to make the ACM even more complex. In these engagements you get to choose how you want to employ your wingman. You can order them to engage (and you cover them) or you can engage and order them to cover you, or you can both engage, etc. It's more challenging than the BFM engagements as you have to have better SA (Situational Awareness) to know where your wingman is, and where both bogies are in relation to where you are.

We recommend starting with the BFM campaign to build your dog fighting experience and then use those skills in the ACM campaign.

You can start with either but having a good BFM skillset when flying the ACM campaign will ensure you can quickly kill the bogey and then help your wingman.

Hopefully this helps to explain the differences!
