In the next update for the Viper, we will introduce two new submodes for the Position mode for the AGM-88C HARM.

These are the Equation of Motion (EOM) and Pre-Briefed (PB) submodes. Both new submodes allow greater engagement range and loft angle assists. Additionally, EOM allows potent off-axis HARM engagements.

Thanks!

F-16C Viper

Development Roadmap

Hero2.png

In the next Open Beta, you will receive the GBU-31 and GBU-38 JDAM for the Viper! We are now working on fixing outstanding bugs related to the Air-to-Air Radar and Navigation Systems. Enhancements are also being made to the Flight Model in regards to available G and angle of attack modeling.

Once we have addressed the critical issues, we will focus our Viper efforts on completing important Air-to-Air Radar functions: DTT SAM mode, bullseye, intercept steering cue, ACM Slew, and more.  The Helmet Mounted Cueing System (HMCS) with the HARM Targeting System (HTS), Link 16, Air-to-Ground Mode, and IFF will also be integrated.  The AGM-154 JSOW and the ALQ-131 and ALQ-184 electronic countermeasure pods are also next in line to be added.

In this video we’ll discuss JDAMs for the Viper. Our F-16C will be able to employ the 2,000 lbs class GBU-31(V)1/B, the penetrator 3/B version, and the 500 lbs class GBU-38.

For the GBU-38, two can be mounted on each BRU-57 smart bomb rack unit.

They can be loaded on stations 3 and 7.

Some of the biggest advantages of JDAMs compared to laser-guided bombs is that they are fire-and-forget, and you can employ them when the target is masked by weather.

In this video, we’ll look at the AGM-154A Joint Standoff Off Weapon, or JSOW, for the Viper. The JSOW is un unpowered glide bomb that weighs approximately a thousand pounds. It has a range to up to 70 miles range, based on launch altitude and airspeed. It is a fire-and-forget weapon that uses INS and GPS to reach its designated target.

It can be loaded on stations 3 and 7 as either singles or pairs using a BRU-57 smart rack.

The A model includes 145 BLU-97A combined effects bomb submunitions, which are ideal when attacking unarmored and lightly armored units. It is not though designed though to destroy heavily armored units like a main battle tank. While there are also B and C versions, the United States Air Force only operates the A version.

Key commands:
Set SPI - Target Management Switch (TMS)Up: Right Ctrl + Arrow Up
Set SOI Between Displays – Display Management Switch (DMS) Down: Right Alt + .
Set SOI to HUD – Display Management Switch (DMS) Up: Right Alt + ;
Weapon Release: Right Alt + Space

In the previous AGM-154A JSOW video, we looked at the employment process. In this video, we’ll go a bit more into what type or target you would use it for.

The primary task would be against air defense sites, and to a lesser degree unarmored and light-armored targets. The AGM-154A is a great Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (DEAD) weapon, whereas the AGM-88C HARM is a Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) weapon.

Although it can be effective against lightly armored vehicles like APCs, IFVS, and self-propelled artillery, heavily armored targets, like main battle tanks, are best attacked with Mavericks and sensor fused munitions like the CBU-97 and CBU-105 (coming in August).

Flight Dynamics Update

Dear all,

One of the most important updates we are working on for the Viper is adjusting the angle of attack and G loading models. We’ve been making good progress, and the sustained rates match the reference data well across airspeeds, altitudes, drag indexes, etc. The same can also be said for acceleration and Instantaneous Turns Rates (ITR) below approximately 20k MSL. We do though still need to adjust acceleration and ITR above 20k MSL. This is not a simple matter, and we hope to have this task complete this autumn.

Kind regards,

Matt

DCS: F-16C Viper | CBU-105 WCMD

COMING SOON

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll look at the CBU-105, Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser, or WCMD. Like the JDAM and JSOW, the CBU-105 is an Inertially Aided Munition, or IAM, that uses the Sensor Point of Interest, or SPI, as the aim point.

The CBU-105 is a canister weapon that contains ten BLU-108 submunitions, and each BLU-108 contains four skeets that use a sensor to detect and fire an explosively formed penetrator at the top of the target.

This is an ideal weapon against armor targets in a 1,500 x 500 area.
This a very similar weapon to the CBU-97, that also uses 10 BLU-108 submunitions, but as an IAM, it has a better standoff capability, and you can attack multiple targets on a single pass.

Dear all,

With the release of the CBU-105 WCMD today, some of you may be asking yourself, "where the frack is the CBU-103?!" Fear not, it's still coming but we are currently not satisfied with the CEB weapon affect or visual effect. Once we nail these down, we look forward to releasing this weapon and updating the CBU-87 that also uses CEBs.

Kind regards,

Dear all,

In one of next Viper updates, we'll be adding the option to toggle between LAT/LONG and MGRS on the Steerpoint (STPT) page. This done through a DCS (dobber) right press and only for Steerpoints 21 to 25. While this may seem a bit odd, it is correct for a 2007 Block 50. Also, there is about a three second delay when converting from LAT/LONG to MGRS.

Note that to toggle between MAN and AUTO Steerpoint sequencing, the MAN/AUTO field will need to be highlighted and then press M-SEL to toggle.

The DEST page will also have this, when this DED page is added.

Kind regards,

Wags

Dual Target Track (DTT) radar mode allows you to designate a primary and secondary target that the radar will continue to update when within the gimbal limits of the radar. However, they do not need to be in the selected scan volume.

In this example, we will set our azimuth to 30-degrees and designate two targets by slewing the cursor over each and then pressing TMS Forward on the control stick to designate them. We can toggle priority and secondary between them by pressing TMS Right on the control stick.

If we designate a third target, it will become the new secondary target, the previous will no longer be one of the two DTT targets.

DTT allows you faster updates of these two targets and engage both at the same time with AIM-120s.

If either target range is 10-miles or less, only the two DTT targets will update. Once either is at 3-miles or less, it will become a Single Target Track automatically.

Please note the radar symbols are still very much a work in progress.

Used Key Commands:
TMS Forward = Right Ctrl + Up Arrow
TMS Right = Right Ctrl + Right Arrow
Dogfight Switch MRM Mode = 4

Kind regards

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll look at converting Lat/Long long coordinate to MGRS coordinates on the Steerpoint page. This is an item from our road map.

First, select the Steerpoint DED page from the ICP. It’s important to understand that you can only convert between Lat/Long and MGRS with Steerpoints 21 to 25. Once you select one of them on the ICP keypad or Steerpoint rocker switch, press the DCS, or Dobber, switch to the right to toggle the coordinate format. When going from Lat/Long to MGRS, there will be a small delay.

Having MGRS coordinates is useful as you may receive tasking coordinates in MGRS format at times.

You may be asking yourself how you will toggle between manual and automatic Steerpoint sequencing because it also uses Dobber right. Now, you need to Dobber to the Manual/Automatic field and then press the M-Select button on the ICP to toggle it.
Note that you can only automatically sequence steerpoints 1 to 20.

Kind regards

Coming Soon.

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll look at the addition of the radar warning receiver indication on the helmet mounted display of the helmet mounted cueing system. The indication can be enabled or disabled from the HMCS DED page.

The display is rather ghetto compared to the Hornet’s system and will only display the RWR gear priority threat. It appears in the top left of the HMD with the threat indication in the center. The notch in the circle indicates your head position relative to the nose of the aircraft. The diamond indicates the relative threat radar location f

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll discuss the use of Mark Points in the Viper.

A Mark Point location can be designated through the HUD, the HMCS, radar, or targeting pod, and stores the location in steerpoints 26 to 30.
This is useful for returning to a target, and later, sharing over the datalink between flight members. Later, Mark Points through the HMCS and sharing Mark Points between team members will be added.

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, We introduce you to the core features of the HARM Targeting System, or HTS. The HTS consist of the AN/ASQ-213A HTS pod that can be mounted on the right nacelle hardpoint and the HARM Attack Display or HAD. This HTS system can locate, identify, and target surface-radar emitters for a HARM attack, and it can provide a Sensor Point of Interest, or SPI, as a an aimpoint for another sensor or weapon. This is a much more powerful HARM attack system than just using the HARM as a sensor or relying on known enemy radar locations in the position modes.

Later in development we’ll add other elements like the Expand mode, Geographic Specificity, Target Isolate, and datalink support between team members.

In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll discuss the semi-automatic and automatic dispense modes for the Countermeasure and Dispenser Set, or CMDS.  This is a continuation of the earlier CMDS lesson that discussed setting up programs to release chaff and flares. Please see the linked card.

Programs 1 to 4 can be selected from the programs dial on the CMDS panel and initiated by pressing forward on the CMS switch, Program 5 is triggered from the slap switch above the throttle, and Program six is run by pressing left on the CMs switch.

Each of the six programs can be edited from the CMDS DED page. Select LIST and the CMDS button 7. From the main CMDS DED page we can set bingo levels and turn on and off the voice alerts for countermeasure release feedback and request counter when using the semi-automatic mode.

Dobber right brings us to Program 1 and we can cycle to the other Programs by pressing the Steerpoint rocker switch on the ICP.

Earlier, we just had the manual release mode as selected from the CMDS panel, and this would manually run the selected program. We now though have the semi-automatic and automatic options from the CMDS modes dial.

When set to semi-automatic and your aircraft has been locked, “counter” will be heard and DISPENSE RDY will be displayed on the CMDS panel. It up to you to manually initiate the selected program. Again, this can be Programs 1 to 4 as selected on the CMDS program dial with a CMS switch forward press, Program 5 by pressing the slap switch, and Program six by pressing CMS switch left. This gives you the potential for three different Programs at your fingertips.

When the CMDS dial is set to AUTO, the CMDS will automatically run the selected program on the CMDS panel. You will need to be careful with this though as it could quickly exhaust your countermeasures if not careful.

Also, on the CMDS mode dial is the bypass option. When selected, pressing CMS forward will release one chaff and one flare. This cannot be modified until we add the data cartridge option.

DCS: F-16C Viper | Air-to-Ground Helmet

In an earlier video, we explored many of the air-to-air functions for the Helmet Mounted Cueing System (HMCS) of the Viper. In this video, we will review its air-to-ground functions that include steerpoint and sensor point of interest display; JDAM, JSOW, and WCMD cueing; Maverick cueing; and setting a Mark Point as a sub-mode of MUD Markpoint creation.

The Sensor of Interest (SOI) must first be assigned to the HUD and the weapons must be in Visual (VIS) mode. To move the designation to the HMCS, press Target Management Switch (TMS) forward for more than 0.5 seconds and release. To return the designation to the HUD, press TMS aft.

When the designation is assigned to the HMCS, TMS forward to ground stabilize and TMS aft to return the designation to the aiming cross if the designation has been slewed using the radar cursor slew switch.

COMING SOON

With the introduction of ECM for our Viper, we will start with the ALQ-184 short pod, and then follow it with the ALQ-184 long pod and ALQ-131 pod. ECM operations can be conducted in Self Protection Jammer (SPJ) mode (Position 1 and 2 on the Transmit switch) and Barrage Noise Jammer (Position 3 on the Transmit switch).

CMS aft and right on the control stick are used to activate and deactivate ECM transmission.

ECM is most effective against hostile radar acquisition greater than 25 nm. Under this range, ECM is less effective.

We have plans though to further improve our global ECM environment with more effective and realistic jamming effects. For SPJ Position 1 and 2, we hope to later enable Radar Priority for Position 1 and Jammer Priority for Position 2 (also for the Hornet), but it is not possible currently.

For now, Position 1 and 2 behave the same as Radar in Priority.

In parallel, we are also adding jamming effects to the FCR.
