Operation Snowfox - Persian Gulf PvE Playground

Recommended Posts

Eager to try this mission out tonight on my private servers, but just for clarification, is it just the server that needs to do the following or do all the clients need to do it too??

Thanks

"Ok so here is the deal. Persistence is very possible, but it would require people to de-sanitize 'lfs' and 'io' which is part of MissionScripting.lua in their installations. This allows for the exporting of data from the mission into a file that can then be loaded at mission start. I imagine some people may already do this to get things like TacView to load? Anyway ... it is very possible to add it in. I figure if people are comfortable with this then I can implement it for a future version.

The downside to this is that if you want to start the mission again 'from scratch' you would need to delete the exported data before starting up the mission.

How do people feel about this? Feedback is definitely required for this one."

For what you are doing, only the host machine (server) will need it.

Just a little bit of news for anyone interested.

First, I will put out an update hopefully before next weekend to add a waypoint to the F-16 groups so the targeting pod can operate properly. Was unaware this was an issue until I tried it myself last night.

Second, Operation Jupiter for Normandy WW2 is now in the process of being put together. Early days but I'm hoping to get something up for it in the next few weeks. Operation Jupiter will have both red and blue coalitions available to fly so it can be used in PvP if that is your thing. Probably won't be anywhere near as involved as Snowfox in terms of custom sounds etc but we'll see what happens.

Hey Surrexen - this mission is fantastic work.. with unit persistence in place you’ve actually created a user selectable 120+ mission campaign that can be fired up at any time. Absolutely awesome!

Question for you - I end up playing totally single player (when I can find the time) and I like to focus on SEAD and A/G missions... with all of the air defenses and enemy air units I tend to get smoked more often than not even when calling in support packages.

Would you have any recommendations on how to reduce the number of enemy air units that get spawned over the course of playing? Are there any easy to adjust settings within the mission editor I could tweak to tone down the A/A threat so I work in my AG techniques? (Either frequency of flights? or total number? Or both?) Kinda simulate having air superiority?

Not a knock on your work at all it’s fantastic  - I’m just wondering if there might be a way to dumb down the overall difficulty for missile bait like myself LOL

Yes. Whatever ground units/ships/static targets you destroy gets saved to file, and that file is loaded at mission start and whatever is in the list is removed. The actual mission objective might be different though. The mission selection part will figure out if one of the target groups is already dead etc and will select a different mission if need be.

First, just want to say WOW...what a great mission and effort on your part. We have just started using your mission, so thank you!.

In regards to the persistent scripting, if I understand it correctly you just remove whatever has already been destroyed. If that is correct, is it possible to just replace the object with a damaged and burning object so that subsequent pilots will see the damage?

EDIT: Looking at the code it appears that the static objects are exploded and smoke is added, but the units are just removed. Do I understand it correctly?

I agree with this.

This, and Operation Clear Field are great missions. But I also find myself getting shot down far more by the A/A threats than Ground to air units. I’m simply just not a good dogfighter yet. (Still working on that :book:)

I might be wrong, but I’m guessing that you had in mind 4-6 or more in multiplayer mode? I sometimes play with a buddy, and we’ve had on more than one occasion, 10-12 enemy fighters on the map, in the air at the same time.

Maybe a menu item to remove or reduce the quantity of A/A threats in single player mode?

Again, thanks for a great mission.

I believe with a small number of human players, you should call for AI backup via the menu.

Glad I’m not the only one... I do like the action but even calling in escort/MIGCAP (as suggested above) I still have a hard time carrying enough AA ordnance, dodging SAMs and ultimately expending the limited AG ordnance I’m carrying. :joystick:

That being said. I found the post in the other (Caucasus mission thread) about adjusting the SetSquadronCapInterval min & max intervals (I’ve adjusted them to be hours instead of minutes) so we’ll give that a try...

The mission grew what what I originally built as a Tomcat playground. I built in all the AI flights so that in single player all roles could be filled out no matter what you do. It is supposed to be hard. I don't imagine Iran (or Russia for Clear Field) rolling out the red carpet welcome so to speak. Yes I get toasted in my own missions, especially if I don't approach a target with the appropriate levels of respect.

I will tweak some numbers for spawn times for the next build and then see what I can do about putting in 'difficulty levels' or something in a later build.

I tried your mission today for the first time and only briefly, but oh wow!

My performance wasn’t great (vr, so my fault) and I’ve no idea how I’m going to get past the

SA 10 sites (im playing SP) but still, oh wow.

I can’t wait to try again, thank you sir this is brilliant

Just keep requesting SEAD support via radio and send wave after wave of your own men at the enemy SAM's, eventually they'll knock them out :pilotfly:

Lat and Long Hornet

This mission is a blast having fun trying to survive. The one thing I am trying to figure out though is when I get mission status not sure how to put the Lat/Long it gives example N 26.32.953 E 54.53.172 or N 26.32.57.154 E 54.53.10.326 into the Hornet's normal or precise which is either N XX.XX.XX or N XX.XX.XX.XX or N XX.XX.XXXX ? Thank You for such a great mission.

Totally agree - with unit persistence turned on I’ve been having a blast slowly whittling away the enemy air defenses and I’m spending hours making multiple sorties a night - RTBing, reloading, taking care of scrambled CAPs and eventually taking care of some of the assigned missions. It’s great.

As for the coordinates. I haven’t had any issues entering the 2nd (bottom) version of last/longs displayed in the Target Report Option that read like this DD.MM.SSS N DD.MM.SSS E (I think)

Sounds like you have “Precise” selected (which is obviously critical) are you entering the N and E before typing in the numbers? Also there is an option (in the HSI data page) to toggle the format of the lat/longs the system uses (I’m not in front of my PC but it’s in the lower right hand side of one of the pages) that needs to be set to the lat/long decimal option (but I’ve not had to change this in the past)

Assuming you have options set right and inserted a new waypoint into the waypoint sequence the entry steps should roughly be like this (from memory):

Click UFC in the HSI data page

Select POS in the UFC

Enter “N” (i.e. the number 2)

Enter first 4 digits DDMM <press ENT>

<UFC will prompt to enter :TTO> Enter SSS <press ENT>

Enter “E” (i.e. the number 4)

Enter first 4 digits DDMM <press ENT>

<UFC will prompt to enter :TTO> Enter SSS <press ENT>

Select ELEV in the UFC

Enter elevation in meters. <press ENT>

I’ve had success with the above process - of course I’m doing this in VR without the ability write the coords down so I’m getting pretty good at furious typing these things into the UFC before the target report disappears! But like I said, this has been working for me and I can actually find the targets...

Next update will give back the fuel tanks to the F-16's since we can jettison them now, and bring fixes to the target report. Also Pakistan will be blue coalition instead of red (for when a certain plane gets released).

In terms of precise coordinates it's a bit tricky as there isn't an available function to convert the data into DDMMSSDS format.

You could always do it manually by calculating the decimal minutes value and multiplying by 60. I do share your pain though so I will see if I can work out how to get the data into DDMMSSDS.

Edit: Looks like something changed with the DMS coordinate function somewhere along the line and it's spitting out extra numbers. I'll look into it.

The target report will have DMS values back to 0 decimal places, DDM to 3 decimal places and now DMSDS outputs (for your Hornet JDAM needs) in the next update. I have to thank Zyfr for his assistance and code getting DMSDS to work! To be honest I hadn't been paying attention to the values for DMS and had not noticed it had gone to 3 decimal places by accident.

Nice - that’s a great update. I recently started using JDAMs (targeting via the TGP) and was like why haven’t I been using these before!

Unrelated question for you Surrexen. Are enemy airfields destroyable (or damagable) the way this mission is constructed? Say I take on a rogue mission to bomb one of the enemy CAP airfields and succeed in bombing the runway would that suppress future CAPs spawning at that airfield? Those pesky enemy CAPs do make it quite a challenge to break out the A-10C for some dedicated ground pounding.

Loving this mission, with persistence turned on it’s great to slowly make progress clearing out threats so I can focus on the real strike missions.. excellent stuff

Honestly I have no idea what happens. There is a fair chance that it might upset the AI A2A Dispatcher and cause all further spawns and engagement orders to break. Feel free to test your plan and report back on what happens :)

Update is ready! Special thanks to Freakshow85 whose help has been invaluable the last few days testing the new target report, and testing Operation Jupiter :)

Changelog v117

- Target report major overhaul, now includes 'precise' coords for your JDAM/JSOW requirements

- Drop-tanks added to default loadout for all F-16's

Edit: Operation Jupiter has been submitted for approval. Fingers crossed.

Persistence ?

Persistence seems to no longer work for me. When I reload the mission the target's that were destroyed are back. I backed up the mission script lua and changed it to reflect as instructed.

sanitizeModule('os')

--sanitizeModule('io')

--sanitizeModule('lfs')

require = nil

loadlib = nil

I backed up the mission script lua file before DCS hotfix update.

Every time an update or repair is done you will need to de-santize again. Make sure the sim is not running when you change the missionscripting.lua file. Once you have made the change and saved it, then reload the sim and try it again. Also check that SnowfoxUnitInterment.lua and SnowfoxStaticInterment.lua still exist in your DCS installation folder. Let me know how you go.
