My first day with the F-14

Holy crap! Is a good start. What an amazing plane. Just started DCS last week, got FC3 and mainly flew the SU-33 around. I built a computer for DCS with VR in mind.

Ryzen 5 3600

32 gigs of 3200 ram

Radeon 5700 xt

Oculus rift S

 

Enter the Tomcat.

 

After a lot of hours of searching on here I found some settings that work great. The cockpit in VR is INCREDIBLE. Can I sharpen up the outside world? What setting controls that?

 

I was annoyed that I had to keep reaching my keyboard for ground ops and the mouse to hit switches....

 

Enter the oculus "hand" lol. I have it now I can do the complete startup without touching anything but my HOTAS and one of the "hands". I set the ejection seat arming to a switch on my HOTAS so I don't have to contort myself and the rest the "hand" can easily reach. Moving the wing sweep lever was tricky, but I figured it out.

 

I've practiced startups, taxiing, takeoff, landing, (on land) and that all went pretty well. Excited to start carrier and combat training.

its just amazing how much fun it is to fly that thing, especially with multi-crew. I just can't get enough of it, what a masterpiece by Heatblur, its just that amazing. There is still bugs, some of them super annoying (falling off the deck when the carrier turns for example), but still, a masterpiece.

Although a fully armed Tomcat DID fall off the deck of a carrier back in the 1970's, so that is kinda realistic, if unwanted. :)

 

 

Its a great sim. Ive bought other DLC, but to be honest, this is all im flying right now. Its just too much fun in multiplayer, particularly when you bag smug Hornet drivers with it.

I'm nowhere near ready to fight anyone yet lol. I still haven't figured out how to turn on the RWR lmao.

That virtual hand makes huge difference in the immersion.

Why I am waiting a lot that Oculus would be smart and bring the hand recognition API to Rift S, extend its FOV as it has wider camera view than Oculus Quest (you need to have hands seen by all four cameras in Quest, limiting it to front of you) and then ED to implement it to DCS just as mouse cursor even if anything!

The Oculus touch controller works great. Very happy with it.

 

So today I did carrier and navigation training, which had it's ups and downs lol.

Carrier takeoff, no problem.

Carrier landing was a lot harder than the SU-33. I felt like the green boxes got me too far to the right of the glide path. When I steered inside of them, I landed just fine. The DLC control works great.

 

Navigation.... Oh Jester....

Followed the training to the letter, except "someone" forgot to close the canopy, so we did it in a convertible lol.
