CrazyGman
So I just picked up the Ka 50, hoping it would tied me over till the Mi 24P hind comes out, and I love the helicopter For a long time when I was young, the Ka 50 was my favorite attack helicopter, and part of it was due to the fact that it was a single seater. (i like the idea of flying solo, though i can see the problems it creates in a attack helicopter.) Anyway I turned a little sour on it when I found out that it didn't actually see much combat use, and part of the reason It took me so long to buy it, was I always doubted the fidelity of the module a bit, because only a handfull of them were made and used, so I always wondered how ED got the information required to accurately model it. I was wondering if anyone has any information in regards to it's use in combat (not found on a wikipedia page) and it's development by ED. thanks. The Ka-50 flew a couple of sorties in the Chechnya conflict. It usally flew together with a Ka-29, who acted as a scout and target designator for the Ka-50. It supposedly worked quiet well. It's good flight performance characteristics helped it a lot to operate well in the mountainous terrain of Chechnya. IIRC one Ka-50 was lost to a general who wanted to try it out and then lost control over the helicopter. As S.E.Bulba posted, E.D. developed the module with active participation from Kamov, and for a long time the Kamov logo was on the splash screen. 10 facts about the game: • The game was created under the license of Kamov OJSC (formerly known as Kamov Design Bureau), the developer of the Ka-50 helicopter. • One of the consultants in the process of creating the game was Alexander Vitalyevich Rudykh, Hero of the Russian Federation, Honored Military Pilot, Sniper Pilot, Colonel. In 2000-2001, he fought in Chechnya as the commander of a combat strike group, which consisted of two Ka-50 helicopters and an all-weather target designation Ka-29. • Even before the official sale, the game "Ka-50:" Black Shark "was used in the Air Force Academy. Harlikwin
Well... That was sort-of educational. Clearly "sniper" means some extra things in Russian compared to other languages. Yandex isn't giving the best translation but it seems like its soemthing like "experienced or senior pilot" In September 1971 on the recommendation of the first Deputy commander of aviation of the Moscow military district three times hero of Soviet Union Colonel-General of aviation I. N. Kozhedub was approved by the Decree of the USSR Government on the establishment of the highest category of the class "Pilot-sniper". This category was awarded to Military pilots 1st class of the air aces, who are fluent in the tactics of battle, have excellent skills of piloting technique and air navigation, know the aircraft, passed the qualifying exams (theoretical and practical). To view the qualification "Pilot-sniper" allowed the pilots of the 1st class: have completed not less than 1500 hours; confirmed annually in the last three years, the qualification "Military pilot 1st class"; have an average score for combat use in the last year is not below 4,96; have excellent knowledge of the results of the theoretical disciplines; not have any breakdown, accident, damage the aircraft equipment over the last year. Awarding a qualification "Pilot-sniper" gave the right to increase the rank on one level, but not above the rank of Colonel, as well as the bonus to their salary in the prescribed amount. In second chechen war, KA-50's used 929 S-8 rockets, some 1600 rounds of 30mm shells and three VIKHR missiles. They performed 76 sorties and in total of 63 flight hours. The KA-50 #25 we have, was in the "Black Shark" movie, and then it went as well to the war in BUG group (4x KA-50's and 2x KA-29 as command helicopters). And each KA-50 got a ABRIS just before flying to Chechen. After the war the results they got was used to define first serial production standard. Ka-50: first combat experience In 2000, one Ka-29 and two Ka-50 Black Sharks were accepted by Federal troops in Chechnya to test the combat potentialities of this helicopter combination. In general, the results were positive. The pilots were not able to examine all possible and theoretically established combat flight modes of the Ka-50 because of time limitations and weather conditions. However, nevertheless, they highly commended the fire and manoeuvrability characteristics of the Black Shark. Ka-50 and Ka-29 helicopters can perform the search and destruction of specified targets in highlands and flat country in normal weather conditions with a cloud base of 250 m and visibility of 2.5 km. The helicopters also have special equipment and piloting characteristics, which make them able to perform the tasks in difficult weather conditions. — p.25 … <…> Edited November 28, 2019 by S.E.Bulba update.
