Fred00
I just ordered a Rift S, and now I need a new graphics card. My current GTX 980 is just not enough. I'm debating whether I should go for the 2080 or 2080 Ti. The latter is extremely expensive, but is it cheaper in the long run? My reasoning is that the 2080 Ti could probably be enough to drive the next gen Oculus too. I'm thinking that the "Rift 2" will finally arrive with foveated rendering to keep the hardware requirements somewhat low (even if the resolution is bumped). If I buy a 2080 now and then need to upgrade again when the next gen headsets arrive (in 1-2 years) then the total cost will be atleast as much as a 2080 Ti. Of course, waiting for the 3000-series Nvidia cards would be the best, but frankly I'm tired of waiting. I want to jump into VR now. :)
FETUS
If it helps any, I'm using a 1080Ti and it works well enough with my RIft S. If you can source a used one, it may hold you over until the 3000 series comes out. I'm looking to do the same or get a 2080Ti Super when it appears. Fri13
2080 Super does just as well as Ti does when it comes to Rift S performance. You really don't benefit so much about spending 500€ extra to get a Ti version, as when the new Terrain Engine comes out and new Weather System comes out, everyone might find themselves drooling after new CPU and GPU, and that is where your extra 500€ savings comes handy, not now, but in 2-3 years from now, as you get then more for your money than you get with it now over 2080 Super. I could same way outperform 2080Ti as I can 2080S, those few very small extra notches I got here and there was not worth the price, why I returned the 2080Ti, as it was 500€ cheaper to get Super. And one reason in the first place to get Rift S was that I can spend less money in the future for the same performance than with high end VR. i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K. dburne
For VR I will always get the best GPU I an afford, just can't thrown enough GPU power at it, likewise with CPU. nessuno0505
I play rift s with an overclocked 2070 and performance is good. You can always do better but IMHO a 2080 super is a better value for the bucks than a ti.
Chapa
I agree with dburne. Rifts S and 2080ti is the right combo. Of course you will have pleasure with the 2080super. It is quiet similar in performance than the 1080ti (little bit better according to the benchmark I just looked). I own a 1080ti paired with an i7 8700 and what I can say is that this GPU lack a little bit of juice to really shine. The 1080ti is from 2017 so don’t really expect a GPU to really handle well futur HMD. The 2080ti is the GPU well designed for the Rift S generation of HMD. HMD with higher resolution will really shine with the next gen of GPU, even if they works already well. The only dilemna I would have in your position with the 500$ difference depends about your current HOTAS, and your satisfaction about it. Because 500$ can cover the cost of a really nice base+stick and in my opinion, it could provide more pleasure for the bucks than the 2080ti. If happy with your HOTAS, so 2080ti because you will never have enough power to handle VR i7 12700k, RTX 3080ti, 64GB RAM, M.2 512Go, Quest
Zoomer
I run a 2080 standard with my Reverb w/o issue, well that`s apart from DCS`s poor use of multi-threaded cpu`s. That`s where the issue is. In a busy environment the most powerful GPU will by strangled by the software`s poor use of modern cpu`s. So in answer to your question if it`s good enough for the Reverb than the rift s will be a non issue.

Thick8
I use a 1080ti with an Odyssey+ @1.4 SS and 2xAA with no issues maintaining 45 FPS with pretty high settings. The O+ has a higher resolution than the Rift S so I would think a used 1080ti could hold you over till the 3000 series drops. Chaz
I have a 2080 Ti and Rift S. Happy with performance despite having an older CPU. But currently assembling a new comp (i9 9900ks, DDR4, etc). I’d recommend a 2080 Ti to future proof yourself for as long as possible. YouTube | Kick | Twitch | My Gaming Rig
Fred00
Thanks for all the replies! To answer one of the questions, yes, I already own a Warthog, and quite pleased with it. I went ahead and got the 2080 Ti. I'm sure the 2080 would have been sufficient right now, but the idea is to not have to upgrade when the 3000-series cards arrive. Going for the "Ti" will then save me money in the long run (having to sell a used card to buy a new one is never a good deal). But who knows, maybe Oculus will release a new headset in a year and my 2080 Ti will be too slow. However, I'm counting on that it will be enough. :)
Bob_Bushman
I got a 1080ti and currently find this OK, If finances allow though I'm aiming to get the 3k series 80(ti?). But I got the 1080ti since I found my 980ti lacking, so can absolutely understand wanting an upgrade right now. And why not just get a 2080 or 2080ti if you can, I can attest DCS uses 10+ GB of VRAM while I'm playing so that extra ram on the TI is welcome, unlike most other games out there that barely uses half of it. Nothing says you can't get a 2080ti, skip the 3k range, maybe even the 4k range coming in another two years ish. The 80ti range is mainly considered as five year cards so there is going to be a pretty large shift in demand before you need to upgrade much more often than that. i7 8700k @ 4.7, 32GB 2900Mhz, 1080ti, CV1 Virpil MT-50\Delta, MFG Crosswind, Warthog Throttle, Virptil Mongoost-50 throttle. True, but I tell ya as soon as a 3080 Ti or whatever it is becomes available I will be all over it. VR has ruined me lol. Well if the 2080ti wouldn't have been several hundred more expensive than the 1080ti, or a little more performance difference I would have been on it. But I was also spending a lot of cash this while on the HOTAS and various DCS modules. I passed on the 2080ti mainly due to how expensive it was, and 30% more performance would mainly be 20% less than what I would consider acceptable for shelling out $1400, yes it would that much in my country. And what I'm getting out of the 1080ti is "ok". i7 8700k @ 4.7, 32GB 2900Mhz, 1080ti, CV1 Virpil MT-50\Delta, MFG Crosswind, Warthog Throttle, Virptil Mongoost-50 throttle. Svsmokey
Yeah , 2080 and ti are really overkill for the S . My 1070 runs it very well , with my cpu being the (huge) bottleneck . I would think the 2070s would be the sweet spot for the S now . Personally , i'm holding out for the 3070 , hoping the 12gb vram rumors are true (and upgrading cpu/mb/ram in the interim) . 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2

swissross
Google this. I'm in the same boat you are and came here looking for some insight. Several answers but no data to back up comparisons between the different platforms. A quick google search resulted in several comparisons between cards and games. At a quick glance I didn't see any that used DCS as one of their benchmarks, but most use 10 or so popular VR games to compare the cards. It's a good place to start.
