[FIXED] HUD: A picture is worth a thousand words?

Same here. If you want a realistic view then get VR. 2D is dead for true simulation fans.

That is not true what so ever. I know Wags has been discussing with some of the A-10 pilots now using DCS on base. I will see if I can get some more feedback, thanks.

Edit: From Wags: The 2D view is as it should be according to the A-10C pilots. It is normal to have to move your head to the side to view the HUD data. We do though plan to move the default eye position slightly up.

The current issue as I see it (for 2D) is not side to side, but top to bottom.... you either can't see the top end of the hud or the bottom (by adjusting seat height)... If I wanna see the the top of the hud from the default position I have to bend my neck and lean downwards.

You would get the same effect in the past if you would try to adjust your default position (to the correct one like it is right now), the hud would just scale out of the view....

The same feels like right now, as if the view position got adjusted, but not the hud.

VR has the same up-down issue, but that's caused by the default viewing position being just a little bit too far to the rear. Are you able to get the whole thing in view in 2D by adjusting your longitudinal position in the cockpit?

Thanks for the video, I have only been doing a drive-by on this issue and passing info, I was able to reproduce what you were showing and will add that to the report. Thanks.

Thank you, I am sure you can find plenty of reliable information in this thread, for reference.

I am sure we as the community just want the best for the module (in terms of realism) and there is some valuable, real life experience shared here and I hope it can be translated into the SIM

i bought a10c few days ago on sale and i have to say i am very disappointed with the hud right now, cant barely see anything without doing head and body gymnastics, even with adjusting cockpit seat.

I use VR, so it really isn't something I've ever used (if it is currently implemented as it seems you have suggested). View is perfect for me, in any of the 3 air frames that I fly. Good tool for those who don't use VR I'd say, or those who do and aren't able to get the initial view setup properly.

Cheers,

Don

Yes. I use VR only and Up, down, fore and aft to get proper set position.

can anyone imagine a real pilot whining this much about a piece of equipment? IRL its a piece of glass with blurry text superimposed attempting to show the results of a computer’s estimation of aircraft and weapon trajectories. Its not a direct feed to your optic nerve that solves the universes mysteries. Its a tool; its imperfect in real life and in sim.

Was a previous version aligned in a way that made it seem better than it is irl? Yes probably. Is it possible to learn to use the tool in its present state to complete missions? Yes.

You have to adjust tens maybe hundreds of controls to cold start an A-10. Why is adjusting head position such an offensive step to so many?

I am thrilled they are investing any effort in the A-10 and afraid that if we “demand” that the effort is rolled back it will be easier for ED to do nothing than to keep it updated.

Move your head position so you can see what you need. Buy a trackir for better simulation and its barely noticeable.

My preflight checklist: once iffcc test mode is up, I lower the seat height just a bit until I can see the bist message. Then hold my had as far from the screen as I can, zero trackir and when I return to natural head position I can see enough to perform. I re zero trackir a couple times on longer flights.

Wa ha ha . Okay... maybe “imagine a real pilot... with a real mission”? “A lifesaving missing”?

I don’t mean to offend anyone. I remember the fighter pilot podcast episode with the F-14 pilot as they talked about the s$*# they dealt with, resorting to bic pen lids to modify switches, electrical tape to alter nvis lighting, etc. They got it done and I took that to heart with my approach to simming. This would be easy if everything worked and everything went right. It gets fun when you need to improvise, and find creative solutions to any challenge.

But we’re currently flying brand new A-10Cs so there shouldn’t be any “squawks”

Heh. Its often the factory fresh aircraft that are the worst. They make me wonder "How in the hell did this thing get certified?" :D

No offense taken here. Just adding that for the purposes of bringing a little levity to the thread. For aircraft with real, lifesaving missions, I've seen two extremes there. We have air medical flight crews that squawk everything, and then we have the ones that just "live with" things (sometimes really important systems) and we end up finding them on inspections. When we mention it to the flight crew, one of them always says, "Oh...yeah...its been doing that for as long as I remember."

They must be flying some time of prototype A-10C that the rest of the USAF doesn't know about, or maybe they aren't pilots at all. Our pilots, who are not rookies by any means do not need to move their head to read the data on the HUD.

No worries, we all want the same thing. We will see how it looks after the next adjustment is made.

Says people who have never stepped one foot into the cockpit of an A-10 in their life.

He was speaking of VR view I believe which most people seem happy with, there is still an issue with 2D as stated above and we will be making an adjustment.

Please share helpful info, and not bicker with each other.
