Operation Black Bear - A 10 mission campaign for the JF-17 Thunder

Nice campaign so far (I'm at mission 6 now), pity there are not too much other campaigns for the Jeff.

BTW, @JonathanRLthere is a problem with mission 5:

I'm supposed to kill the SA-3 usind LD-10 but it never try to locks me even when I'm straight over its position.

I've "patched" the situation by switching to guns and strafing the radar the goold-old-way in the snow-storm (the internal gun is a crap in AA but works fine in AG 😎 ) but I think this might be fixed in the mission editor in some way.

Or maybe you can simply change the payload to use (i.e. a couple of Mk-20?)

@JonathanRL I confirm that the SA-3 now locks the player and hence can be engaged with LD-10 is ACT or SP modes. Thank you!

However, I found (and fixed) another problem:

In mission 6: IA wingman does not engage the enemy Frigade group when the player order it using the COMM's "Engage mission and RTB/Rejoin" commands.

I found and applied a fix by modifying the mission in the editor (hope you don't mind) and added an enroute task to WP3: "Search then engage group ("convoy escort")".

As per my editor experience, this make wingmans more keen to comply orders (and as a matter of fact it worked with mission 6).

Eager to play mission 7 tomorrow 😉

I had a problem with mission 9:

I launched both the LS-6 in PP mode on PP1 pont (channel 36), leaving all other parameters (except fuzing) to default but both weapons "gone long" and missed the targert...

What went wrong?

Will look into it. It is possible you were too high up or too close to the target but you seem to be a by the book kind of person so I doubt it.
Feel free to skip that mission; not much is going to happen if you already reached the point where you launch so you not missing out on anything.

If you find any more bugs, leave them here and I will update all the missions at the same time. Desert Thunder bugs are best left in that thread 🙂

Actually I don't  think my problem is a bug in the campaing: I saw similar issues using JDAMs o JSOWs, which usually are due to wrong target point altitude, but

I checked the mission in the editor and (surprise!), user-points altitude is not editable: per default they use the position elevation, which obviously make sense.

So, either I messed up something in weapon configuration or might be a bug in LS-6...

Heck no! I'm playing this campaign to practice with the Jeff and now I'm curious to understand what went wrong.

I've already created a simple training mission in the NTTR and this evening I will practice with the LS-6 untill I'have sorted out the problem.

Plan B might be to change the weapon payload with LGB-s and try my luck with the SAM, but no way I'll leave those nuke to soviets 😛

This is the old version of the mission but might give you a clue? I can't find any problem in the mission file, I'll fly it later and check it out if I can trace any problems.

There is something quite strange here:

As I anticipated in my previous post, this evening tried to practice the LS-6 usage on the NTTR with a custom mission. I tried both PP and TOO in a total of 15 launches getting a 100% hit score. The main difference with the campaing mission was that I used to shot at 20K ft altitude (baro).

Now, after dinner I tried again the campaing mission and... missed again (WTF!) in the same way as before: both my LS-6 gone long.

I've followed the procedure as per tutorial/Chuck's Guide and firing PP mode (weather does not allow to use TGP and TOO mode) from 20k ft but no joy...

I did a little experiment: I've edited mission 9 in order to start airborne over WP2, inbound to WP3, to test the problem quickly: I did multiple tests at various altitude but I was alway able to hit the target in PP mode, exaclty like when testing on the NTTR.

Now the obvious difference is that in normal mission I had to manually startup the plane and fly to the target... I'm wandering if the problem might be related to some INS drifting issue or incorrect wepon alignment.

In end I gave up and "fixed" problem with a couple of GBU-16. Yesterday evening I'be finished the campaign and now I'm about to began Desert Thunder.

@JonathanRL Your Operation Balck Bear is really well designed and fun to play.

May I suggest to add a PDF with all missions briefings inside? Some people do find more practical to read mission instructions from a separate document and keep them at hand on an tablet or a secondary monitor.

Sain that, I have high expexctations from Desert Thunder! 😉

Sure, that should be easy enough to do at any rate.

I had a third one on the way but since all my Campaigns are based on a Russian PoV; I put it aside for now. With recent events, I do not have all that much desire to make anything with a Russian PoV. I never got very far with it, I had just built the backstory and the foundation mission anyway. You can read it here:

Hi 

I just wonder if you are still able to answer questions regarding the blackbear  campaign .

what radio channel should be used to communicate  with  the rest of AI wingman in the thunder team? 

When the mission sometimes  was just started. the overhead radio suddenly called both thunder and bolt team should return to base , what thing had triggered that?

Channel for own flight is 119 in both Operation Black Bear and Operation Desert Thunder

It looks to be bug in the mission triggers.

Hi thanks for replaying.

I did a bit research further and found the mission needed both channel  119 and 021 to work with .  Otherwise these AI JFs just followed you around and did nothing. Yesterday I was able to direct the wingman3 to engage bandits . You know what ? It shot down all the targets and left me the player just having a joy-ride. WTF?!

Strange, the missions is built so Channel 1 is your flight channel and Channel 2 should be used for the Datalink.
I will look into it.

And yes, the missions in Operation Black Bear is designed to be easy. It is more of a warm up for Desert Thunder than anything else honestly.

If I remeber correctly, datalink only works on channel 199.
