I'm doing something wrong with radar altimeter

What's the trick to getting radar altimeter data? I change the switch below the UFC from barometric to radar but, regardless of altitude or even if I'm sitting on the ground, it will always flash "B" to the right of my displayed altitude when I'm in radar mode. I'm sure I'm doing something stupid but I can't figure out what!

It flashes B when you are above a certain altitude. An altitude at which you are too high for the radar altimeter to detect the ground. AFAIK.

No trick. I believe radar altitude is only displayed below 5000’ AGL. Above 5000’ it will show barometric altitude with the “B” flashing behind it. “R” will show below 5000’.

As far as I've seen lascaris' problem would only occur in a cold start mission using auto-start, as the auto-start misses this step (or in a cold start mission with manual start sequence). In missions that start with engines running that knob seems to be set by default.

@LeCuviet I essentially always do a cold start manually. I honestly don't even know how to do an auto-start :) Very rarely I'll start hot on the runway or already in the air.

I admire your patience!

PS: it took me a while to find the command in Options/Controls, as the command name starts with something like "Push to Test ..."

Thanks USMC_Trev! I am forgetting to turn on the alert altitude!

That knob actually not just sets the alert altitude, but it turns the entire radar altimeter system on!

@LeCuvier oh I could have looked it up but to state it more directly, I don't want to do an auto-start. I kind of like going through the motions of starting up and for the F-18 it's pretty quick and easy especially compared to the M-2000C! :)
